Functional Hood Scoop Mod w/SA Glass Scoop

Recommended Posts

It is Halloween, so I decided to something spooky, namely cut a hole in my hood and grind up my SA Glass scoop...

This all started as I had bubbling under my hood pin plates...

so I figured being I was having paintwork and stripes done may as well get out the cutoff wheel....

There was a special sticker pasted under the block off plastic piece and a glass mounting layer that was epoxied onto underside of scoop. I am going to put resin over this as I think its pretty cool...I am going to ask the shop to paint the underside white I think but to absolutley tape this off so you can still see it if you try...

All I need to do is some adjusting to the hole with my dedicated aluminum file, and some sandpaper. Then finish up the scoop mod to a level I can live with. And take it all to paint shop, the silver is going to have to get resprayed as it had a chip in it anyway near a rivet from original installation of glass scoop. The rivets were a little challenging. But no biggie. I am going to ask the paint shop to squirt some of that body panel adhesive stuff in the exposed double walled areas so it is like factory did in other places on hood....

Yes, and nicely done on the additions to your post count! :poke:

I know its is a pain to post pictures this way as well as it will not let me upload any more than one due to file size and I have the camera on the lowest res setting....

You know I can get a 12.4 in my car...:poke:

Thanks guys !!

I had a bit of anxiety about placement and spacing etc...and thought about a few ways to measure, then after 3 diet cokes, I just went for it....and in the end just basically eyeballed it with a 12 inch steel rule to kind of mark corners using factory underbrace edge as a guide and Chips picture, from there it was easy...actually too easy.

That is some lightweight aluminum when you start messing with it.

This has bothered me since I first saw the car and it almost kept me from buying it...problem solved...and my stripes are going to be all new as well...

When I went and looked at it this morning, the car just seemed cooler and more mine...Like the Buddah says, the mind is everything....:confused:happy%20feet.gif

Thanks Chip, as you can see, your image was leading the way....Cheers!

0471,

Well done. The car does seem a lot cooler and more "real". The 1966 GT350 hood scoop was open into the engine compartment the exact same way. That black plastic block off plate screams phony and it always bugged me. You'll like the result!

Was thinking about doing this to mine but had questions about the water getting into the engine bay and messing up the spark plug coil packs that are expensive to replace. Anybody have any problems with this issue?

Have had the Chip Beck/Heath scoop for years and never had any issues with water, not sure water even gets in there

Thanks Scotty....I dig both hod set ups ...any members in the PNW want to do this and want to use my shop or need a hand...I'll give it. The side scoops I would do to anyones car as well, just not mine...:hysterical: although I am VERY tempted.....

The deal with the rain seems to be a non-issue from others who have done the mod...but as you can bet I will keep it updated as to what I find out as I live in raincity...

Does anyone have pictures of the process of removing the plastic honeycomb piece from the SA glass scoop? Do you have to grind it off on the fiberglass version?

No it unbolts with speednuts for the nuts...but then you have a fberglass tab to grind off...I will take some pictures and post for you not a big deal to do at all...

I have driven my car in heavy rain for long periods of time (never on purpose) when caught a long way from home when a downpour started. There is no problem with rain damaging anything. I'm sure some rain gets through but I can't see any evidence of it. Rain also splashes up from below and comes through the radiator. We have many members who have been running open scoops for years and there has not been a single problem.
