2BIGFRED
I think I am going to go with the yellow top Optima battery tomorrow. I had the first incidnet after my car sit for about a week it would not turn over to start. I figured the yellow would be better then the red. Is there any any placement issues that any of you know about with these batterys? Also for winter storage I am getting a car cover tomorrow and whicch fuel stabilizer is the best to buy? I am getting a battery tender too but cant decide where to get one I figured ebay should be fine. I have cut 4 nice big mats out to park my tires on and I plan on getting it clay barred one more time and waxed before she gets put up.
clark17357
I have seen only red tops in our cars. What is the reason to go yellow top? I am getting ready to replace mine and would appreciate any tips you have. Jim

Jim I was told the red tops are for cars that are daily driven and the yellow ones are for cars that are garage queens and that are being put on tenders often. kahmann
I've had nothing but trouble with Optimas the past couple years. I used to use them exclusively in all of my cars. I'm not sure if it's just my luck lately or if something has changed with their manufacturing, but I won't ever buy another Optima again. I'm currently using Odyssey batteries in both my SGT and my car hauling trailer without issue. Good luck whichever direction you go. As for fitment issues with Optimas, I never had any. They slip right in without any modification necessary, as long as you pick the correct battery (there are obviously many different sizes to choose from). ilmor
From the Optima website: The YellowTop® high-performance AGM battery is one of the only true dual-purpose automotive batteries available. With premium cranking power and unparalleled cycling capability (rechargeability), it is perfect for modern accessory-loaded vehicles. The YellowTop can repeatedly bounce back from deep power drains to full energy capacity, so it can power plenty of electronics and still start you up time after time. Lower internal resistance also provides more consistent power output and faster recharges. Trucks with winches, vehicles with multiple electronics, cars with high-demand audio systems, commercial vehicles and heavy equipment all rely on this battery to provide ultimate starting and deep cycle power. The OPTIMA® RedTop® high-performance AGM battery is the ultimate high-CCA starting battery designed to deliver the strongest 5-second ignition power for a reliable start-up every time. The RedTop will outperform and outlast traditional batteries in demanding cranking/starting applications. With unparalleled high power delivery and extreme resistance to the most common causes of battery failure, the RedTop is idea for trucks, SUV's, luxury cars, hot rods, off-road vehicles and other applications that require a leak-proof starting-only battery. clark17357
This from an Optima dealer about the difference between a starting battery and a deep cycle battery and when each can be used. With our cars, it is not like they are diesels, which need all the CCA you can get. : What does deep cycle mean, and how are deep cycle batteries different? Deep Cycle refers to applications that typically discharge 60 to 70% or more of the battery capacity. An automotive battery is an "SLI" battery (Starting, Lighting & Ignition.) Its plates are designed to deliver maximum power for a short duration. Starting an engine typically discharges an SLI battery 3% or less. When an SLI battery is used in a deep-cycle application or in a vehicle with heavy accessory loads, the battery life will be shortened proportionally to how deeply and frequently it is discharged. A properly sized deep cycle battery will work well as an automotive starting "SLI" battery to provide current for starting, ignition and lighting, as well as providing current for deep-cycle needs such as car audio, auxiliary lighting, winching, portable power, etc. The OPTIMA Deep Cycle battery uses a different chemistry for the plates' active paste material, and a slightly stronger acid. This chemistry allows for a much longer life in deep cycle applications with only a slight reduction in maximum power output. When should a deep cycle battery be used? The most common use of deep cycle batteries is in applications that require deep, repetitive drain, like powerful car audio systems, trolling motors, golf carts, electric wheelchairs, winches, or RV house power sources. All Optima Yellow Top's are deep cycle batteries, and all Optima Blue Top's are deep cycle batteries (except the 34M.) Public safety and high performance vehicles are other applications that call for the special characteristics of OPTIMA deep-cycle batteries. Question: Can a deep cycle battery be used for engine starting? Yes, and this is often advisable. If the cranking amps rating is sufficient for your vehicle, there is no reason not to use a deep cycle battery for starting, and if the vehicle's electrical circuit will experience heavy discharging -- even if it is only occasional -- you will likely get more years of service from the deep cycle battery. Optima deep cycle batteries have more than enough cranking amps for most cars, trucks and SUV's. Jim

03 DSG Snake
I run a Red Top in my 03 that sits for a few weeks at a time and it's been solid. Thinking of putting a Red in the GT500 as well. I do use Tenders now and then, but only after they've been sitting for awhile.
6-Speed
IMO the D35 Optima is too tall ... at least for the GT500. It fits, but I don't want any battery post that close to the underside of my metal hood regardless of the plastic insulator on the positive terminal. I am going to look into using an Odyssey PC925MJT AGM battery. I just need to come up with a good means to secure it to the OEM tray.
