Supersnake at Pikes Peake Raceway

Took the SS to Pikes Peake Raceway last week for three day road racing course with Mike pettiford

was great fun and i learned alot about driving. I have always been a drag strip guy so this was something new and was an absolute thrill!!

NOT as easy as it may look (for those who have not tried road racing) and it is hard to tame the POWER that these cars make. overstear is a real issue if you do not modulate the accelerator well. in fact the power adds a level of complexity to driving this car because you cant simply step on the gas at WOT and run a course like this.... you'll spin all over the place.... like driving on an icy road.

Here is a video of two laps (it is a short 1.4 mile course superimposed on a short NASCAR track). this is the view from the infield tower.

Mechanically the car did pretty well. as you all know it is a HEAVY car so the brakes heat up early and I had some fade at about 3 laps. also got some rotor warpage that was apparent after the second day of driving. i was pretty aggressive with the car.

on day two i started getting some coolant spilling from around the intercooler reservoir cap after about 4 laps of hard driving.... I am still looking into this issue. this was accompanied by heat soak. I think the coolant in the intercooler was superheating and the tune was taking timing out of the car to protect. I got the high intake air temp code on a couple of occasions and had to shut her down.

This was ALOT of fun and I am seriously considering local competetions. I would probably not race with my SS because I don't want to break the car but i would seriously consider buying a dedicated track car (if my wife will let me!). I have a new level of respect for those of you who are road-racers.... that is for sure!

That trailer looks almost as good as the car! How do those Race Ramps work out for you? I've been eyeballing a set of their trailer ramps lately.

Thanks. They work great. i can open the doors without hitting the fenders and they make it easier to strap the car up. there is an art to getting the car on them, though.....

Very cool. Mike is the right guy also. I've known him for many, many years and he's a great guy and instructor. Now that we have High Plains Raceway here, there is much more opportunity to have this kind of fun. Wait until you get out on that track. It is quite amazing and loads of fun. :salute:

P.S. Did you know that the only race that Tommy Kendall didn't win in the 1997 Trans-Am Championship was right there at Pikes Peak International Raceway. I worked for SCCA Pro Trans-Am back in those years. That was great fun.

That looks like an awesome time! :happy feet: What kinda MPH were you hitting on the straight away?

The car looks and sounds great! Nice tow set up too!

Hopefully next year we can get a group to do this at High Plains :shift:

Scott it was most fun i've had with clothes on!

the straightaways are short so only about 125mph top speed.... High plains is much longer and top speed will be 150+ i bet.

would be great to get a group at high plains next year.

only down side is that this type of racing it is HARD on cars...... brakes, tires, motor.....

Car sounded really good! I can't imagine getting brake fade on that track as it seems like the straights would have given alot of cool down time and air flow. Have you changed your brake fluid lately?

Nice video!

It could be the fluid. But even with new fluid, I had a soft pedal about 15 minutes into 20 minute sessions until a changed pads. Competition pads made all the difference in the world. I run Hawk DTC 70 in the front and DTC 60 in the rear. Now I get zero brake fade and the stopping power is significantly better than the stock baer pads. You will have to get slotted(not drilled rotors). Baer makes and sells them. The drilled ones will crack BAD. See my post on GT-500 mod and tech. I have photos of my cracked rotors. once I put the slotted only rotors on, I had no further issues.

These cars are a handfull on the track due to the heavy front end, but as you get to know them and learn how to drive them, they are alot of fun and with good tires and brakes and the Revan Racing(Shelby Cooling System), you can run them hard all day long.
