PCV system.... vent / breathers or oil separator ???

Recommended Posts

OK.... Starting this thread because I seem to find conflicting info when searching here and other s197 sites and not sure what's right or if it really matters that much.... so here's my question:

Which should I do? run lines to breather tank(s) from both valve covers OR run a JLT (or other) separator on the drivers side?

Pro of the breather tank is that no oil goes in the intake at all... I like that in theory, but the engine bay is pretty tight and not sure where i'd like to put a tank. If you think this is the way to go, do I need special line or is just regular fuel line ok? Is the oil fill breather needed if this is the route to go?

Pro of the JLT is almost factory looking install, but I have my doubts about how much oil vapor will still make it past to the intake, I saw the video he posted and it seems to catch a hell of a lot, but I guess you could just say i'm skeptical of if the internals would look any different over the life of the engine from a separator vs. the stock pcv system since by nature some of the oil must still be getting through...

Any thoughts? Pics of your setups?

I'm running breathers on both sides. My passenger side breather pukes oil onto the valve cover. In addition I tried venting the oil filler as I saw this suggested on another forum. It did not seem to help. I would like to put catch cans on both sides as I do not like venting the oil onto the valve covers.

I've been running the UPR catch can for some time and it catches quite a bit. Now that I'm going SC I'm going with the Moroso catch can with the breather. I'm deleing the UPR can. I've been running aeroquip hoses with the UPR with AN fittings and they work great so going to stay with those hoses. HTH.

You should have just bought my Moroso vented can :poke:

Serious though. I am running cam cover vents, but after my recent updates with a smaller pulley (aka more boost), I am getting oil out of the passenger side vent. I just added the CFM vented oil fill cap, but if the leakage still ccurs on the pasenger side, I am going with a seperator on the drivers side and pulling all the vents.

Save your money on the vented oil cap. I went that route after upping the boost and it didn't work. Just my experience.

I had the same issue with breathers - the passenger cover was getting drenched in oil. But I really like not having any mess going into my intake, so I plumbed a hose from the passenger cover to a vented catch can I picked up from ATP Turbo next to my water/meth tank (where the battery used to sit). Now all the oil just collects in that can, which I dump once a month or so. Problem solved.

I've got another one of these cans, brand new, laying around if you want to give it a shot. It comes with the filter and mounting bracket.

You can barely see it pictured in the upper left of this photo. The red hose on the left is what I used from the passenger cover to the bottom of the vented can.

  • 2 weeks later...

OK, got my lil' Jaz can... pretty sure this is where i'm putting it, but you guys chime in on what you think! The wire was just to hold it in place to see if it looked odd there... to me, it kinda blends in and doesn't draw much attention, but i dunno... I will drill a hole thru the airbox and the can has threaded inserts to bolt in from behind, so it should be a fairly clean install....

Here is a thread I posted on my catch can. http://www.teamshelby.com/forums/index.php?/topic/61734-oil-separator-catch-can-an-update/page__p__1050330__fromsearch__1#entry1050330 The first post I made in this thread has a link to an informative thread on catch cans.

This has worked very well for me as evidenced by the oil collected in the catch can jar.

Yeah, but for just 600 miles it seems like a lot... wouldn't that work out to be 1/2 a qt roughly between oil changes?

Might be. might be. The mileage was estimated, maybe 600 maybe 900. I didn't write it down. I think there is closer to an ounce maybe an ounce and half in the jar. So calculate that for me, oz. lost per oil change! And, after you figure it out, let me know how to stop it! :hysterical:

I know guys with 2003-04 Terminators running the catch cans adapted from the plastic moisture traps used on compressors who fill them with less than a thousand miles.

I will chime in, Does it have to cost a lot of money to catch oil? This one does not look too out of place and only cost 8.75 on ebay. It comes with clamps, brackets and hoses, I bought two of them, I will get the JLT ones later

Looking great Rick!! Just got back from SEMA.

There is no stopping it, just ship your car to me and that way you won't have to worry about it... :)

Seriously, it probably doesn't even matter for all I know, I just didn't expect to see that much...

The bad thing is the more boost you add the more you may get. It does not seem like it is the same on every car. When I had my Harley truck there were guys getting enough oil they had to empty there seperators every 1000 miles or so and some with the same mods and boost levels that would have to empty them every 3000 miles, it will also depend on how hard you drive the car and how often/long you are in Boost.... Great mod either way so that your octane level does not go down.

Looks great to me. Nice install.

As for eBay catch cans, they're junk and could possibly do more harm than good.

Read springer's post on catch cans thoroughly before investing in a cheap can with nothing more than a ball of steel wool shoved inside.

Hey Ken, is this the one you installed? : http://www.atpturbo.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=tp&Product_Code=ATP-ACS-018&Category_Code=BCS

How did you run your plumbing lines, from where to where?

Since I've supercharged, I'm getting concerned about this subject!

^Yeah Sam that's the one. I just ran a hose from the passenger cam cover PCV elbow to a fitting in the driver's side of the can. The passenger side hole in the can was just plugged. Then I stuck a K&N breather directly to the driver's side cam cover vent. That's it.

The PCV system is open to the atmosphere, but without the oily gunk spewing all over your passenger cam cover and front plugs. Once a month or so, pull the can out and dump the oil it's collected.

Thanks Ken, I was trying to figure out the air flow direction/pattern and that clears it up! Looks like I have a new mod!

OK, the Jaz breather can is installed, all seems to be working fine, put 30 miles on it, no oil, but quite a bit of water in the can... not sure what that's about, but I'm guessing normal since I've seen the milky oil/water mess that comes out of most of these set ups...

Painted the "cap" of the breather black to match, and I think it all looks like it belongs now!

An interesting side note, this is just SOME of what drained out of the stock intake after 20k miles...

Perhaps a stupid question, but hard to see in photos, the intake is in the way....I assume driver's side is plumbed into the other side of the can and you just plugged the port after the throttle body where it ran into?
