Is Carroll's contract with Ford really due to expire soon?

I read someplace that Carroll's contract with Ford is due to run out in 2012 or so. Say it ain't so!!!

The SVT does kick :censored: of course. But without the Shelby name, it would loose a lot

What exactly would it lose? Six plastic letters on the decklid and about five thousand dollars off the sticker price?

That's a win-win where I come from.

maybe the time has come

the 500s have had there second run let SVT have it back and see what happens in 40 years. I can't imagine Carroll Shelby could bless the 80th anniversary but who knows

Great thread Skip...I've talked about this very thing on other threads here a while back. My opinion didn't get much reception...(the :cold: shoulder)!

I am of the FIRM belief that if Carroll is out of the Mustang business, for whatever reason, the SHELBY phenomenon is over. That is absolutely NOT to say that SHELBY cars that are in operation are worth any less or nothing. It is just to say that the SHELBY ride is over at SAI. I used Steve Saleen's scenario as my case in point. Nuf said...thanks. :shades:

Sad to say, but the man won't live for eternity. When he goes, the name has the potential to bring more money in - at least on anything made while he was above ground...

The end of the contact does not necessarily mean the end of Shelby Mustangs. It could simply mean the end of the GT500 as we currently know it (maybe Shelby will sell Ford the right to the moniker, but I doubt it).

I'm certain Shelby will still offer mod packages and performance parts for the Mustang. In fact the end of the contract would allow Shelby the flexibility to offer mod packages for other makes such as GM & Chrysler, hell it could mean we may see a Shelby Hyundai. Before you flame me for suggesting, consider that doing so will open up Shelby to a much larger market which can insure we will enjoy Shelby products for many more years to come.

Contracts can always be renewed.

The date of the current contract expiration that I last heard or read about is 2014...coincidentally, when the next generation Mustang will appear.

And Picasso is just some dude who signs his names on some pretty paintings. :talkhand:

What is that hack selling for these days?

Apparently you missed a subsequent post. It went a little like this...

When he goes, the name has the potential to bring more money in - at least on anything made while he was above ground...

But you can continue all you want :cheerleader:

And you're right, many years from now, the name may bring in silly money. You and I will be artifacts. But for now, you contributed rather heavily to the coffers, on the order of about $800 per plastic letter.

Case in point:

Faux gas cap with Old Man's name on it - $59.00

Buy Ford Racing Parts - 2007 GT500 Rear Gas Cap Fake Cover

Same faux gas cap without name on it - $6.95

Buy Ford Racing Parts - 2005 - 2009 Cobra Faux Fuel Cap

The 2nd cap never retailed for $7. You can't compare prices for a high volume Vendor who is clearing out a part. :talkhand:

They've been offering the nameless faux cap since inception for that price. This is no clearing out.

I think that may have something to do with the fact that this is Team SHELBY, not Team SVT. :hysterical:

Nothing wrong at all with the Shelby name costing high dollars. Free markets - those with goods and those willing to pay for those goods. If we weren't willing to pay, the prices would come down or the seller won't profit or go our of business - his risk or reward - but enough of us are paying, obviously, because I don't see those Shelby prices dropping in spite of our huge recession!

Ford Racings MSRP is $21.95.

FRPP never offered the GT500 Faux Cap in their catalog. That is a Ford OEM part. Apples to oranges.

FRPP carried both in their catalog. You may not find them in the current catalog, but both were carried by FRPP.

The bottom line is that the use of six letters boosts the price waay up.

Per Shelby Licensing, yes Shelby owns the GT500 name, though they print it as 'GT-500'. I'm assuming it doesn't make a difference when applied to the Mustang.

I see Tob's point Shelby didn't develop the Gt500 project it was something that SVT did the shelby tie in has paid off bigtime for shelby but really didn't change what we were offered from a performance stand point. I call it a tribute to him and his influence in the mustang lineage its nice that they got back together but all the stuff it created because of the hype really sucked.

Thanks for having an objective eye.

Imagine if years ago some assembly line in Europe cranked out the same painting for a few years, each one with Picasso's name in the corner (and not even signed by him). Picasso got a kickback and the line kept crankin' 'em out. There's a more relative analogy. Still make sense to you? What was that about a hack?

I don't see the point of talking negatively and disrespectfully about a man who is still alive tob. Carroll Shelby has a lot more to do with the Shelby Mustangs than you know about. Read a little bit more history on how Carroll Shelby was asked to make the Mustang a performance machine. I would appreciate too if you would be more respectful of Mr. Shelby and his contribution to our cars.

SVT may have developed the GT500 but Mr. Shelby signed off on every stage of development.

What does it matter who signed the the paychecks or where the car was developed and built. The Old Man still had hand in it. When SA built the first Cobra and Daytona's Mr. Shelby had an platoon of fabricators, mechanics, engineers, and drivers working hard to gain his blessing on the final product. It's no different with the current GT500.

Since this is 2010 afterall, I expect responses like yours. Everyone is a winner, take your ball home with you, political correctness, calling people either "haters" or "trolls", etc. If you perceive something as negative then good for you. I never implied that capitalism was good or bad or that Mr Shelby was taking advantage of misinformed Mustang enthusiasts. So I'd appreciate it if you treated everyone's point of view with respect, not just that which you prefer. As to Mr Shelby's history, I have stacks-o-plenty of literature around the house espousing his motorsport successes. Your history lesson recommendation may be better served to help someone new to the hobby. Besides, this thread isn't about yearning for days gone by. It has to do with his current contract with Ford, which begs of an impending expiration date.

As long as there are those that will pay for something with his name on it, none of this really matters, does it? Many paid a hefty premium to be the first on their block to own one of the initial S197 GT500's. Ford benefitted, Shelby got one heck of a return for his part, and thousands of Shelby fans got their "exclusive" automobile. To argue to the contrary would be an exercise in foolishness.

None of that was my point.

Well. I have to admit, I never expected this :slapfight: kind or response to the post.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and since I started this catfight, I suppose I'll chime in.

Mr. Shelby's legondary, yes legondary, effect on our cars, racing, and Ford seems undenyable IMHO.

It's not just the look my '500, or how it performs that blows me away. It is a freaking Shelby!

I can't tell you how many people have loved the car from a distance, but then when they get close and read the back, I hear things like "Woo you did not tell me it was a Shelby!"

Mr. Shelby, Carroll if I may....ya did good. :salute:
