Going in Monday for rear end humming

Developed a low speed hum from the differential. Not the "turning moan" everyone has, but a 10 mph humming sound. Very noticable as I'm coming to a stop. I took the tech for a ride and he said it didn't sound normal, but they'll put it up on the rack on Mon and listen. I'll keep everyone posted.

**UPDATE**

The tech put it on the rack and listened to it...confirmed definitley not normal. He said it's most likely the bearings (anyone heard of differential bearings going so soon?) and ordered a set. He didn't want to tear it apart until he had the parts in hand (thank you) but still won't be 100% sure that's the problem until he takes it down. So I'm driving it until the parts come in.

More to come...

I had mine in for a similar sound, but mine was occurring at highway cruising speeds above 50 MPH. It would increase in pitch as speed increased and sounded to me like a gear mesh problem. The techs gave me the option to tear it down and rebuild it, but couldn't promise it would help. They said they spoke to SVT about it and they said it was a "characteristic" of the car and that tearing it down was authorized, but not a likely remedy. I love SVT and Ford and my Shelby even more, but the words "its a characteristic of the car" are really getting thrown around a lot about these cars and their inherent problems.

I chose not to have the rear torn down as I didn't want to end up with worse problems down the road after I started moding the car. At least this way, its documented that the car had the problem while it was stock and even the service writer admitted that even if I mod it from this point they will be on the hook for any rear repairs involving the gears.

Yea I thought about that, but what the hey they have to make it right regardless. I'm tired of tolerating things that aren't right becasue "it's a characteristic of the car." I love this car but it seems the GT500 has more gremlins than usual.

At the very least I'll get a new set of bearings and inspection. This service dept has been great and never said boo about my TVS on this car or my last one. There's a GT500 specialist there so I'm not too worried about them screwing it up.

**THE VERDICT**

Got the car back today.

DIGNOSIS:

BEARINGS AND RACES WORN

PINION GEAR TOOTH CHIPPED

WHAT THEY DID:

REPLACE DIFFERENTIAL BEARINGS AND RACES

REPLACE RING AND PINION SETUP

FYI this car was never taken to the track or abused. The rear end was basically worn out in 8100 miles of normal driving.

Moral of the story: 2010+ owners listen to your differential carefully and if there's anything that doesn't seem right, take it in. That "normal" sound you hear may not be normal and may wind up costing you bucks down the road.

I must say I am very pleased with the way the job was handled. Once the parts were in, I brought the car there after noon on Wednesday and the car was back to me on Friday. (They did the axle vent TSB also.) The only thing that concerns me is Fords LACK of quality control. 8k miles on a 50k car and the rear end goes already? Is is a design problem? Very discouraging to say the least.

I'm glad this thread exists as it will help any other people if they happen to encounter the same problem.

But are you really concerned with the percieved lack of quality control because your car has a fairly one off problem? I mean this really isn't like the clutch thread were a bunch of people are screaming the have the same problem.

I sincerely hope it's just a fluke and I was just unlucky to get a bad one. There are tons of posts about peculiarities in differentials, and what I'm saying is the problems may not be so inane as Ford has suggested.

My 2011 with 1700 miles on it started making a loud noise when turning today. So far my brake cap leaks, car wont shift into second gear and now the rear end is making noise.

The noise while turning is the clutches in the differential. Lots of guys on this forum will advise on friction modifier to fix, but only sparingly.

Mine had that too, but when it started making noise going straight, it was time to bring it in. FYI they added friction modifier when they refilled it (it's on th work order). There's no turning moan but we'll see how long it stays quiet.

It only lasts about 2,000 miles (that's what my '11 did) and then started moaning in the turns again.

Mine had what started as a slight hiss and turned into a moan at 45- 50mph at 1500 miles that would vibrate the mirrors. It was the differential side bearings. Not talking about the sharp turn posi-clutch moan, different noise.

I remember there was a production hold in 2010 for carrier bearings, maybe some got through and mine was one of them if thats the bearings they were talking about..

My '11 has the low speed turn whirring sound, and a high speed whine even gonig straight (If I coast the straight line whine goes away). Oh yeah, my car also vibrates at any speed above 45 mph. Neither of these "characteristics" appeared until Ford put a clutch in my car, trying unsuccessfully to fix the 1-2 grind issue.

I did just get 22.5 mpg on a trip though (cruising at 75-80 mph), so it's not all bad.
