2011 Roush 5XR vs 2012 Shelby GT500

Ok everybody I need some advice. I am currently deployed in Iraq and my dream is to have a new GT500 waiting for me when I get back to the states in May 2011. I have been in talks with dealers waiting to hear info on the 2012 Shelby. The other day I came across the news about the new 2011 Roush 5XR coming out. It caught my eye with the supercharged 5.0 motor. I have no clue what to do! I always wanted a Shelby but I'm afraid that that the Roush might be the better buy. Can any give me their opinions on my situation? Thanks in advance.

First, thank you for your service.

About the car, if your dream car is the GT500 then don't settle for less. I thought about getting the Roush 540RH before I got the GT500. I thought I would save some $ on insurance but to be honest, the insurance isn't that much different on the 2011 GT500 from my 2004 Mustang GT.

Half of the fun is doing the research on the new car. Enjoy that part while you are deployed.

OEM > Aftermarket tuners always and forever. Yes aftermarkets parts can be used to improve a vehicle. The Roush/Steeda style cars are great if you have no desire to mod the vehicle and want a decent all around package. However, the sky is the limit if you use something like the GT500 as your base. Plus I still think the 2010+ GT500 wins in the looks department against everything else.

You are welcome for my service, but its not necessary to thank me. I always liked the Shelby and the Roush mustangs. I just want a high performance mustang. If I get the Shelby, I would do the pulley swap/tune, change the rims, and the exhaust. If I get the Roush, I would see what will come available as far as a pulley/tune and thats about it. The Roush needs little to change in my eyes, but I'm afraid that the supercharged 5.0 wont perform as good as the Shelby's motor or vice versa. You are right Steve, it is fun researching a new car, but its driving me nuts! lol!

There's an AURA...

Actually thanks, I knew ora didn't look right.

Back on topic...A buddy of mine was in the market last year for a "fun" car and really wanted a Mustang but wasn't sure which one. He had it narrowed down to an '09 Shelby, Roush and a Sherrod. I myself never heard of a Sherrod but when I saw the pics I talked him out of it quick. I gave him the same advice I gave you. Told him to go with the name Shelby and the potential of the car with some mods. So he bought the Shelby. He's thanked me several times for talking him out of the Roush.

If your dream is a Shelby...get a Shelby. You'll seriously always have doubts if you dont. There's an ora about a Shelby that no other

Mustang tuner car can come close to. (in my opinion)

+1 You're right Brother, anything Roush is killer, but it's still not a Shelby. (imho)

I think the Roush is maxed out horsepower wise with the 5.0 on the stock internals. You would have to upgrade the internals to squeeze any more power out of it. The Shelby is a better platform to mod. It won't require any internal modifications 'til around 800-850 HP. I would bet the Roush price would be in the same range as a base GT500.

Thank you for your service and dedication to this country! I am retired 23 years E-8 and we need more like you, good luck, it is all worth it! Go with your first instinct, if not ; you may always wish you got it. I have owned many mustangs and trust me when I say there have never been one as good as the Shelby GT500. Mine is the 2010 model and each year Ford gets better, so go for the 2012, you owe it to yourself for the time you spent away from your family and friends defending our right to buy the greatest sport car made! Thank you and go for it! you only live once.

Shelby bro! You've worked VERY hard for your money and deserve the best you can get (which I too thank you for). Why settle for anything less than a 2012 GT500 if that's your dream and if you have the coin to reward yourself with it?

To me the Roush, in terms of looks, just looks like a California Special and for the dam near $16k (with NO "options") that the package costs, you could probably do better by grabbing a new C/S or base GT and picking your own mods out with that money. Still, you'd be hard pressed to beat what you can get out of a GT500 right off the show room floor. The best looking, driving, handling and most comfortable Mustang I've ever driven and I've owned QUITE A FEW....

I VOTE for one of each :happy feet:

I can't answer this the way I want without making someone mad - :evil2.0:

Enjoy your research and make sure to post pictures of your new ride upon your return

If your dream is shelby, then buy the Shelby. Both are great cars. I have no doubt that you will love either of them once you are behind the wheel. Personally I bought an '07 Roush 427 and loved it, but as many here stated, it wasn't a Shelby. So, I traded it in and bought the '08 Shelby. Love the Shelby. Will not be trading it in for anything. On the flip side though, I still wish I had the financial means to have kept the Roush as well. I still dream of the day I can pull off getting another Roush in my garage, just not at the cost of losing the Shelby.

A few side notes:

As far as cost and trade in value, the Shelby wins by a mile. The Roush will be more expensive to buy (at least on paper) without some dealer incentives, and it will not hold its value in an open market.

The Roush will actually be a more limited production car. And, as far as I am concerned, Roush is the modern day version of Shelby. All he does is build cars and teams that win races. (isn't that what made Shelby famous?)

Either way, enjoy it, enjoy coming home, and let us know what you get and send pics.

Thank you everyone on your help, knowledge, and advice. Once I hear news on the 2012 Shelby and my quote on the Roush, I will make my decision. I will be half way done with my deployment in 2 weeks so my "new mustang" anxiety is only going to get worse! lol! When I get home I will post pics of whatever I decide on getting.

Thank you for the support you have shown me about my deployment through your replies. I'm proud to be here supporting the war for great people like yourselves!

I just purchased my 11 gt500 and I also looked at the Roush as i have a couple of close friends with them. Bottom line I just liked the gt500 better and when I done seriuos price comparisons supercharged, big brakes,etc.. Roush was going to be 10k more and imho have less resale value. I vote Shelby but both cars are sweet.

I have wanted a Shelby since I was 5. The first time I saw a '68 Shelby GT500 I fell in love. That's something that is hard explain and impossible to replace. There is something about a Shelby. It's kind of like a Harley. Sure there are faster, better handling motorcycles. But a Harley has the X factor...........like a Shelby. I was able to get my Shelby when my wife "convinced" me to get rid of my Harley. I too looked at Roush and even Saleen. I obviously chose the Shelby and have yet to regret it. There really isn't a wrong decision, it's all in where your heart is.

This is all good information on the Roush/Shelby comparo. The toughest thing is to compare these cars without actually having the driving experience of both cars in real time. I have a 2010 GT500 coupe and was thinking of trading it for a 2010 Roush Stage 3 Vert. The Roush looked great and on paper sounded great but in terms of the driving experience, it didn't have the quality feel of my Shelby. It is hard to describe but the car felt much more crude - kinda like it had been engineered for max HP and everything else was secondary. The other thing is resale value. If you look on autotrader, you'll see there are some brand new 2010 Stage 3 Roush's on the market for $13K discounts off their sticker prices. From what I've been told by friends of mine, these cars do not hold their value anywhere near as well as a Shelby. If you have your heart set on a Roush, don't overpay on the front end and be prepared to lose ur a** if u sell it within a year or two after buying it. Check out F'nsweet.com the Roush fan website if you haven't already. It's a good source of info....

I just want to let everyone know that I made my decision up and I will be ordering a 2012 Shelby. I always wanted a Shelby so hell, I'm getting a Shelby! I just want to thank everyone for their input on this post! Once I receive the car I will definitely become a member of team shelby. I'm just waiting to see what the Recaro seats look like before I place my order. I'm also juggling around the idea of getting the electronics package and I was wondering if someone could answer my one question with it. When you connect an ipod to the car, can you select the songs by using the touch screen or do use the Ipod?

I have 162 days left on my deployment and will be hopefully picking up the Shelby in 163 days. I'm keeping busy by making my list of parts I will adding/changing, this is fun!

You will be very pleased with the gt500, trust me.

The answer to your iPod question is, depends how you connect it. If you are just streaming music via bluetooth from the iPod to the car stereo, then you control the songs via the iPod. However, if you plug the iPod in to the USB port, the stereo indexes all the tunes, so you now can control and select songs with the touch screen or voice commands via sync.

Hope this helps. Have a safe deployment, and enjoy your Shelby when you get home.

Mike
