Cloth to Leather interior change

Recommended Posts

Thanks to all that assisted me on details for my car in earlier posts. I recently purchased a very low mileage 08 SGT in Vista Blue, of course. It was born with the interior upgrade package with satin aluminum instrument panel appliques but with charcoal cloth seats. Apparently this is rare on these cars but not desirable. I have never been fond of cloth seats therefore I am considering upgrading with Katzkin leather seat covers installed by my Local Ford dealer. Apparently this is done all the time. I like to keep my cars as "original" as possible but on the other hand I like Leather.

First: I am looking for input as whether I should remove the cloth and re-install leather. If I remove the cloth, I was told it could be removed safely therefore saving it to re-install on the car many years from now to put it back into "as born" condition if I or some future owner desires to do so.

Second: What color leather. I am thinking about Saddle as found on the 2010 and 2011 mustangs. That saddle color appears to look good on the Kona Blue cars.

Does anyone have an opinion of this color combination that would help me make up my mind?

Your opinions would be appreciated.

I would remove the cloth simply to preserve it! If you're going to keep the car and drive it the cloth will deteriorate never mind the possibility of a stain. I wouldn't get the parchment looks nice with blue IF the car had gold stripes but not so nice with silver IMHO!

Keep an eye out for the regular mustang charcoal seats from another car such as a wreck

Or someone swapping them out. Even better dual power heated seats! They do come up on eBay etc from time to time. Be sure to look for front and back.

Then store the old seats. I'd say if kept in new condition those cloth seats may be worth a few $$$ in 20 or so years!

BTW, I agree it's your car do do what you want!

Go to the Shelby Parts Store and check out the Shelby interior upgrade package. It's pricey but it would be a great way to get leather and it looks awesome. And besides that, the Interior Upgrade package is a true Shelby mod. This would make your car more valuable and desireable...if that's what you're going for. If I was in your shoes, this is the ONLY option I would consider, otherwise leaving the car stock.

I may be alone on this one, if you have space, just take those seats out and store them and put in some Sparco or Corbeau racing/street seats, you can even custom order these in cloth, suede, or leather-functional seats are the way to go. I slide all over the place in my OEM seats, only downside is that you will lose the seat airbag.

The saddle brown leather is very fancy looking, very unique- be different :superhero:

While I agree with the stain part of your comment, I have to disagree with the cloth deterioration. I have a cloth interior 94 cobra and the seats look brand new with 92k miles of wear. I'm sure Ford has started using better materials for the leather but the 94-98 leather seats crack and wear out very easy.

I do agree, I would grab another set of take out seats and recover those. That way you can keep the original ones intact.
