Ford Navagation Units

Recommended Posts

I know I've seen some of you ask about Ford Factory Navagation Units and while I really want one of these, I simply can't afford the price right now. With that in mind, I figured I'd try to help out a few Shelby members looking for one. I have email the seller and he confirms these were purchased from Ford to put in "high end Saleen cars" and that the can be used "In a Shaker 500 or 1000 car". Without further words, here's the link:

This is a good find but....

Warning Note: "* This unit is NOT plug-n-play. You will need to take your car to a Ford dealership to have the unit programmed."

We've had this discussion before MANY times here. But I'll say again, In my experience, and the experience of others (google it) this is a hit or miss thing and more often than not a miss! The mustang forums are filled with years of people trying this and giving up in frustration with no one ever discovering exactly why no matter how hard you try you can't add a Ford Nav unit to a car that didn't come with it. I have heard a few claim success, or partial success, but never have I seen a step-by-step that works. It's all trial and error.

Your better off buying a 3rd party unit than this OEM product unless you need a replacement.

BTW: These are 08-09 units, the 07's have all-black knobs.

Well if he says these will work with a Shaker 1000 set up he doesn't know what he's talking about. Shaker 500 cars, yes. Shaker 1000 cars, no unless you're willing to give up the Shaker 1000 speaker system.

I have the Ford NAV unit in my 2006 Hertz which is a year before the nav unit was made available for the Mustangs. It can be done. The tip is to get a nav unit out of a Mustang so that you don't have to have it reprogrammed. If you get a nav unit from another car like a truck or SUV it then needs to be reprogrammed.

I still think a 3rd party unit is the way to go.

If you're not set on a factory OEM look then definitely go aftermarket. More bang for your buck. If my car was a daily driver I would probably go aftermarket but since its not and I wanted a OEM look that wouldn't attract too much attention I went OEM.

One of the biggest pluses on going aftermarket is that you can trick those units to accept input while the car is moving. It's a pain in the rear that with the OEM unit the passenger can't input a new destination while the cars moving nor can I as the driver try to re-route my destination when stuck in a 10mph traffic jam.

Agreed! There are posts of how to get around that but AGAIN they have caused other issues for some so I just live with it. Don't forget the cost of DVD's too! I'm usually a year or two behind on updates which I get on ebay sold by those that have updated. Sadly I often have to swtich to my TomTom iPhone app.
