gth0007
I have a project in the "thinking stage". I have a GT-H (CS-6/8) fiberglass hood installed on my SGT. I want to make it functional and was thinking maybe of installing the GT-500 or Super Snake Heat / Air extractors. Is there any duct work, gaskets, etc under the hood on the SS or GT-500 that directs the air or are they just heat extractors ?? Also is there anything under the hood that prevents debris, water, and road crud from getting into the engine compartment ?? My plan would be to paint the extractors the color of the car and place them outside the stripe line to tone down the look. I'm not trying to make a SS or GT-500 clone, just wanting an inexpensive (extractors are around $200) way of making the hood functional and using Ford / Shelby parts. The Terlingua hood is nice, but even if available is $800 plus $200 shipping plus repaint / rework and stripe paint. Not interested in any of the Cervani or other aftermarket hoods. Any thoughts or opinions ??? Thanks in advance, Larry
ilmor
I just happened to see these Cervini louvers the other day; you may or may not be aware.... https://www.cervinis.com/product.aspx?car=1&id=1208#4352
speedyburd33
Don't forget that if you have them installed there will be a considerable amount of time involved in measuring out the even placement on both sides as well as cutting the hood to make a hole for the extractors. I would think that it can be pretty tricky to get a good tight fit and have a seal work perfectly around the outside of the extractor. Are you doing this yourself or having a shop do it? JeffIsHereToo
Ok...here is my opinion and take it for what it's worth, aka nothing! It's a REAL REAL pain to convert this hood for very little benefit and a lot of pain. Someone here a few years ago tried this and it wasn't a good experience. The efforts of different people to do this were noticed by SAI and later the Deep Draw hood was released. If I have time later I will try to find those posts where some had pics etc. The Deep Draw also a different design because it works better for the purposes you describe. That said, even if you get the things to work, and even if you solve all the other issues, you are essentially hacking what one day someone will restore. The hood is a part of Shelby history and one day there will be no more! At least not any from Shelby. So I would like to see it saved from that fate, while saving you the time and effort, and offer to buy the CS6/8 hood from you so you can apply that $$$ to the hood actually designed to function that way and get the best of both! If you have a white car all the better! :happy feet:

There is so much talk about a "functional hood", so I guess the question is "what does that mean". If there is no performance gain, or very minimal, then even the Terlingua hood may be a waste of time. In the good old days, a functional hood meant a "ram" effect, better air, thus more horsepower. I guess if you have a supercharger than the additional heat build up may be a problem, but for the normally aspirated engine, may be the functional hood is not necessary. And yes my car is white, the black cars are just shadows of the white cars.
ilmor
I think that the installation of the Shelby Heat Extractor makes more sense than fooling around w/ the hood.

kahmann
I had the SS vents installed in my hood recently and it was a serious PITA. Installing them into a hood other than one that was built for them is not a great idea. I found this out the hard way. After 4 trips back to the body shop, I'm finally happy with the way they look and function. I'll post pics up later if you'd like to see how it turned out. There seems to be little, if any, performance gain so wouldn't be worth the trouble. thanks everyone for their thoughts.
