How's this for bad luck...and timing

My '07SGT0015 with only 6,000 miles and in perfect shape was at a local speed shop having a Brenspeed Detroit Rocker cam installed.

While waiting for the dyno to open up, my car was sitting outside when tornadoes and hail hit Phoenix yesterday. To make matters

worse, I changed insurance companies just 48 hours ago. The shop owner said the hail nailed me pretty hard.

Here's the question...insurance wise what should I look out for. I'm worried about paint match and dented stripes etc. Actually I have zero experience with this type of claim. Thanks for your input.

First sorry to here that. Second I would check into paintless dent repair. My dads Kia got hit real bad with hail and he took it to a paintless dent repair shop and I don't have a clue how they did it but it looked as if there was never any damage done to the car.

I can't help you w/ insurance, but please start another thread regarding the Detroit Rockers. This is something that I've considered doing and would like to learn more!

WOW Jeff sorry to hear about that! I hope it all comes out okay.....

I'm not sure about insurance but possibly the garage where the car was may have some responsibilty (I don't know , just throwing that out there).

As far as the paintless dent repair I to have witnessed some amazing thing being done that way. We had a storm go through here last year that hit a dealership damaging several cars they were all fixed with the paintless system. Same storm hit where I work, several co-workers had damage that was fixed paintless, you would never know it!

Good luck.... maybe some day we can talk about it over a beer.

I guess you'll find out how good your new insurance co. is. Hopefully it will be a good experience.

The Shop should have some type of "garage keepers" coverage to take care of any damage to your vehicle while it was in their possession. I insure a detail shop and they carry similar coverage for any vehicle they are working on. Should cover the car with zero out of your pocket, if the shop is setup correctly. Always a good question to ask when dropping your prized Shelby off to have work done.

I've seen dry ice used to repair hail damage, including on my '86 LX coupe back in the early '90s. On large surfaces - hood, roof, etc. - the metal memory can be assisted with the application of the dry ice and dents will usually pop right back out. Unfortunately, the paint on my old Mustang was so far gone that it also popped the paint off, leaving little inch-round primer spots on the roof. But your paint is new enough that you shouldn't have this problem. The biggest expense is often trim pieces that cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

Good luck - hailstorms aren't fun for anyone except body shops and PDR outfits.

I had over $4k with in damage to my 04' GT this year and 99% of it was taken care of with PDR. You couldn't even tell there was damage there at all. The trim pieces needed replaced and that was about all. My hood got a crack too but it was a CF hood so that was a good chunk of the repair cost.

I would recommend just finding a good paint shop and talking to them about who they trust to do their PDR.

Good luck, it will be good as new when it is all said and done.

We had one of those 100 year hail storms in Texarkana several years ago and my son's 05 Mustang GT received over $5,000 in damage. The hood was replaced and they did PDR on the rest.

There were some trim pieces that had to be fixed with that said, while your insurance and the shop insurance is important, more importantly is the shop that does your dentless paint repair. Your community will be covered up by drifters coming in for a quick buck. Many people try to take short cuts to pocket extra cash on the deals through deductables etc.

Find a PDR vendor that your insurance company approves and will stand behind. I know you are sick over this, been there and done that, but in many cases it can be repaired.

You are most likely going to get a car fax issue also on the car, we sold Scott's Mustand shortly after that, I would suggest you do the same, there are many good deals on SGTs out there. Some companies and states also allow for loss of value over accidents, check on this also.

Good luck on your repair............... GG

One other edit thought, if the hood has to be repaired, get the deep draw one if your scoop issue has not been resolved.

  • 2 months later...

i was an idiot i went to the Ford's body shop and they used conventional repair. they said they had a PDR team but they aparently "weren't good enough" to fix all the dents.

But, they did a good job with the body work and repainting it, but it was like they had to twist some arms to get the stripes ordered from Shelby.

In the adjustment the insurance put down for a hood replacement, but i don't think the shop replaced the hood. They just didnt want to tackle a new hood with having to apply the scoop and lining it up and figuring out where to drill the holes for the hood pins.

i shoulda took it to another body shop that was into specialty cars like Shelbies.

in hindsite i should have told them to get rid of the scoop and forget the stripes just have the car solid white. i think it would look better with just the rocker panel stripes. i may do that someday but have another shop do it.

i like the looks of the scoop but i dont want to put it back on a new hood if i do this. And i dont want to have to jump through hoops just to get the new fiberglass scoop replacement from Shelby. i guess all they would need is a vin# and CSM and pictures of them and the car. but whatever.

the insurance gave me about 6k on the adjustment. my car was beat up from hail on every body panel except the front and rear fiberglass facias.

this happened only 6 months after i bought the car. i was astonished. we never got hail that bad in all the 38 years of my life here.

my advice: find a shop or whoever that can do outstanding PDR work. get references.

I agree here, but I also had the same problem with my 07 GT500, stupid me took it back to the Ford dealership to have it repaired as the dent repair people could not do it, to much damage. I guy who has a repair shop and I've done business with for years chewed my butt out when he found out what I did. Taking it to the dealership will for sure get it on the car fax report. As he stated and I should have thought this threw more carefully, as he has always done beautiful work for me was if I brought it to him he would have repaired it, and it would have never appeared on the any car report. If you do decide to go that route, and if your happy with the work that is done, sell it if you want, and be done with it. Other wise, just keep it and know one else will know about it, other then on here.. LOL
