Long wait for new stripes!

Recommended Posts

Dropped my '07 Shelby GT (with 500 miles on the odometer) off at the local Ford dealer for new stripes and hood scoop 12 weeks ago. The dealer ordered the stripes and scoop ahead of my appointment, so the parts would be ready to install at appointment time. Well, after I dropped the car off, the dealer decided to find a stripe installer to do the job. They finally found an installer about 80 miles away. The installer pushed his appointment back by a few weeks which had the car sitting in the shop waiting. When he finally showed up and started taking the stripes off, the paint on the front bumper came off with the stripe. So back to the body shop to get the front bumper repainted and get the glue off from the old stripes. Installer shows up and when he got ready to install new stripes, a defective roof stripe was discovered in the box. So a call to Shelby for another set of stripes, and that's where I'm at, waiting on stripes.

12 weeks of having the car sitting at the dealer......(and counting) Crap!

I'm not sure why you would leave your car at the dealer for 12 weeks ???

Your first visit should have been an inspection with some pics taken. That should have taken no more than a few hours. Your car should have gone home with you that day.

Your next visit should have been for the install after the dealer notified you that the parts were in. You should have been in & out within one full day.

Now if the dealer called you and said he wants to have a 3rd party install the stripes, well that is not uncommon but they should have said for you to come pick up your car until this 3rd party installer could come out.

Where this 12 weeks comes in I sure don't know. Leaving a car at the dealership, I don't care what make of car or dealership, is asking for trouble. And now the dealership says the stripe was bad right out of the box. Sounds like someone is trying to buy even more time.

I'm afraid there is more to this story, a lot more. Especially from the dealership.

Good luck with this but you really need to start talking to the service supervisor or the general manager of the dealership.

I'm a big Shelby fan like most of our other forum members, but everytime I see a stripe issue come up I absolutely cringe. I see some serious customer service issues and a great deal of finger pointing going on. There are four parties involved here, Ford, Shelby, the Original Stripe Manufactor, and the car owners.

I am absolutely surpized no one has filed a class action law suit against all three of the entitites, the actual fault in my opinion is a defective stripe/material that most likely was not Shelby or Fords fault but they built/installed and warranty the cars.

I believe that when a customer has a stripe issue Ford & SAI should jump through all possible hoops to ensure everything is done in a timely manner and sufficient back stock is on hand to handle any requests for customer replacements and find some certified shops were the installation of stripes can be done in every state. They are a real challange on the front and rear bumpers and need to cure after installation for several days.

I like most of us love our cars and Shelby products and I hate to be critical of SAI and Ford but there have been many many P Od customers that feel like they have been jerked around.

These are just my thoughts and I am not mad at SAI, but right is right and the stripes had issues and many many many members were out money and their time, which also has value, being without their cars and some emotional grief around the replacement process.

When a car is sent new stripes it wouldn't hurt in my opinion for someone to let the customer know we are doing everything possible to resolve your problem and we are sorry for the inconvenience we have caused.

I hope our forum members take this in the spirit it was written, I do love my SGT/BJ

I've "only" been waiting for ANY reply from my stripes/scoop warranty claim since August. After Jeremy at Ken Grody Ford took some pictures and said he would email them to the right parties I gave him my email address and asked to be copied on all corespondence. That didn't happen. When I called him in late September he said the claim had been approved but he had not received the replacement items yet. Another month of silence has passed, so I'll be following up again this week. Like most of us, I really wonder why this has to be so difficult. Oh, and this is after Ken Grody himself looked at my car and asked his employee to get on it. He seemed like a pretty good guy. Drives a KR and suggested I install a KR exhaust system on my car.

Just when I think I am over this issue, it arises and smacks me in the head. :banghead:

Anyhow over a year and a half, finally recieved the parts in June 2010 (calling, hounding every week for months, parts were in and he never even called me), even calling Ford Racing and emailing SAI. Could not locate anyone to install or willing to do the repairs, some already had previous bad expieriences with the fix/repairs and said no more.

I had to find a source to do the work, dealer service manager somewhat lazy or not willing. Finally found a souce, scheduled, all ready to go, coordinated with the Service manager, went to dealer to get parts for the work. Guess what! NO Parts! The Parts manager at the dealer shipped the parts back due to SAI told him too. ASAP or else they would be billed. He said that SAI told him, they had the parts to long at the dealer, (4 weeks), :fool: . So took a year to get the parts in, a month to find a repair shop (130 miles away), and this. Tried to get started again, and the dealer told me that Ford racing/SIA or whoever says now my car is not in warranty so they won't fix it. :talkhand:

Oh yes, this dealer lost my at least one car a year business.

Decided, I am going to have the stripes painted, and down the road if needed, change the hood or scoop and move on.

So I will just drive it and enjoy. :happy feet: Still love my car and the way it handles. Not the cars fault. No more specialty cars for me unless I add the parts myself. At least I can have some say so on how and when fixed.

Not all here have had bad expeiriences. As said before this reflects alot on the dealer, but also hard to find someone that wants to deal with the repair issues. There is a major communication breakdown somwhere between Ford and SAI.

If it wasn't for the Great Team Shelby Members here, I would have converted to a, camer nooooo, naaaaa can't say it, just kidding, never happen.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, finally got my car back on Nov. 2nd. While the new stripe material from Shelby is certainly top notch, I am not at all happy with the stripe and scoop installation. There was dirt between the stripes and the paint, so there's bubbles on the stripes if you look carefully. The stripe cutouts that go around the washer squirters are not centered and the guy could have done a better job getting the stripes around the rear brake light and GT emblem. The Shelby emblems are not centered on the trunk.....the S is placed an inch from the left of the (left) stripe and the Y butts right up against the right side of the (right) stripe! Now I have to figure out the correct placement of the letters. There is also a gap between the right front corner of the scoop and the hood. Since there was a bird crap stain on the hood from sitting on the dealers lot when new, I wanted to have that fixed under warranty before the new stripes were installed. You couldn't see it in outdoor light, but it really showed up under flourescent lights. The service manager took a pic of the stain and sent it to Ford. But I got denied, even when I called Ford customer service. So I had to shell out $264.00 to have the hood wet sanded and have the top side of the car buffed out. The only thing that turned out ok from this whole fiasco is the new set of hood pins. I even had the service dept. install a leather-wrapped Bullitt steering wheel, but while driving the car home, I found out that the horn doesn't work. So another visit to the dealer tomorrow to discuss these latest problems.

We have changed vendors on our Stripes and they should not take as long as they use to. Please remember that Ford has to be the first stop to approve all strip issues. Once Ford gives the approval they will notify Shelby about the approval and we go from there. If you have already been approved by Ford for replacements or Warranty and still do not have your items please contact us and ask for Wendy she takes care of all stripes and warranty issues.

Sharon, good to hear your response.

These posts are scaring me to death though. My car also has terrible stripes and since it will be put away for the winter soon, I am fine with dropping it at the dealer for an extended time period.

But I have very little faith that the job will be done correctly. I am leaning more and more towards painting the stripes, but then again I hate to incur the associated cost (and if they screw THAT up, it is permanent.)

Just curious, has anyone in the central Indiana area had personal experience regarding a specific dealer for this repair (or a dealer specifically to avoid even)?

I'm in eastern Indiana and am having my stripes painted on. I've been to the bodyshop a few times to check on it. I am amazed at the their articulation and accuracy regarding factory spacing, color matching, and attention to detail. In fact, they used enough clearcoat to eliminate any raised section of where the stripe meets the paint! When you run your hand over it, everything is flat! I would highly recommend them!

I, too had major problems with my stripes. Mostly my fault, because the car cannot be garaged and all the car covers I've tried pass the morning dew and rain right on through. I finally got tired of trying to keep up with the stripe problems on my 08SGT1050 and had them painted on. Cost was a bummer, but the final result like that of Redlinetoys was well worth it (IMO). The dealer took both front and rear glass out and painted/ striped & cleared the entire hood, top, trunk, front spoiler and license area. The last two areas are a bit differrent from the stock striping, but again I think the car looks even better. Just my two cents.

Hi Sharon,

I have new stripes coming but am now asking the dealer to paint them on here in Riverside County, Ca. (First said no problem, but now does not want to do this) I am hearing that the stripes only last about 5 years-is this true? I also hear that in some cases stripes have to be re-installed more that once to get it right. Is this also true? Can I drive my shelby to your shop to paint the stripes back on?

Or any help from a Ford Dealership in SO Cal that will paint would be good. I know it will cost me, but I just want a good job.

Thanks, 1Mike

I had a small fender bender and decided to have the stripes painted since the SGT already was in the body shop. My SGT should be ready 12/03/10.

I'll let you know the cost and the quality (the body shop does very high quality work) after I pick the SGT up.
