jmn444
Ok, I've bought Andrew's whipple, and it should be here very soon.... so I'm starting a thread to both ask questions as I go, and to show the install process... unfortunately it won't even come close to Alex's level of work on Michael's SGT, but as long as I don't blow it up, I'll be happy! My first question, after doing a once thru on the manual, is I noticed it instructed to run the car to circulate the coolant and the supercharger oil, but the odd thing is, this step is BEFORE flashing the computer, can that be right? Most of the rest seemed pretty straight forward, so hopefully no major snags will be had... I ordered the Thumprrr tensioner and idlers today, not sure what other odds and ends will be needed, but some of that braided fuel line alex used to go under the blower is on the list too.... My new toy about to be shipped:
jmn444
Oh yeah, wouldn't mind some recomendations for oil separators that work good with the whipples as well... I like the JLT look, but not sure yet how/where it would go on this application, so if anybody has one (any brand) installed, let me see!
Jer
On this same subject: Does anyone have a PDF or other file of the Whipple installation instructions? I've considered installing mine myself, and I'd like to get a look at what's involved. Thanks! Jer

jmn444
How do I go about that? does the procal tool allow for that?
jmn444
OK, in addition to needing to know the above about removing the original tune, I just pulled up the procal instructions on fordracingparts, and it says they are VIN specific, is that accurate or should I be fine since we both used it on the ''07 SGT? jmn444
Woooo Hoooo! the toys are arriving! Had a little carnage with UPS, but it appears the pulley absorbed the hit, no visible runout on the hub and everything spins smooooooth... Just glad to have this bitch "home"! Also the goodies from Thump Racing showed up....
jmn444
Also, some info to share on the procal tuners since I couldn't find an answer online. Ray over at frpp is pretty damn helpful! I just gave him the vin's of both cars and he was able to tell me that we have different ecm's, so I will be shipping it back for reprograming specific to my vin/ecm... easy to deal with, and I thought pretty reasonable at $150 compared to what most tuners seem to charge for a tune out there... Had a little carnage with UPS, but it appears the pulley absorbed the hit, no visible runout on the hub and everything spins smooooooth... Hmmmm.... You may want to consider a different pully. That can't still be balanced, can it? And if you do change, maybe a 3.25" or 3.125...? Belt length for 3.125 is 124.7 and (I think) a 90mm lower... jmn444
Yes, Andrew already has a new pulley on the way, it's chipped and bent, I was just stating that the hub it bolts to seems to be undamaged.... I don't want to push more boost till I have the time and cash for both a clutch and a short block if it goes bad!
jmn444
Hmmmm.... You may want to consider a different pully. That can't still be balanced, can it? And if you do change, maybe a 3.25" or 3.125...? Belt length for 3.125 is 124.7 and (I think) a 90mm lower... SOOOO, from what I can tell from talking with whipple and frpp, the 3.5" pulley is the 10lb pulley, used when the kit was rated at 500hp... does this mean that I can just use the 3.375 or the 3.250 pulleys and still use the standard tune? frpp had me fill out a sheet that has the part number of the kit, and the part number is the same from when the kit was 500 vs 550 now.... so I have to think there are not two tunes out there for this.... anybody know for sure? Whipple says the tune is good up to 12psi, which correlates to my thoughts, but I don't want to do anything dumb either.... Still going to just run the 3.5" to get it working, but would like to know my options to bump it up a notch!

jmn444
They are new, a ford dealer selling on ebay is selling them for $235 shipped. My OCD side means I need to save the orig. ones for the future... I was going to wait on the engraved ones, but things started falling into place to start the install this weekend so I decided I better have what I need on hand. Pretty sure I'll have everything to get it done by Friday with the exception of a air venture that should follow close enough that I feel comfortable starting the project. The only thing I might still order to do during install is one of these to eliminate the pcv system: still debating venting to atmosphere, but leaning that way... SGT/SC2873
looks great. Can't wait to see your first post after driving it. You are going to love it. It will be like a go cart on Steroids!!!! I took mine out the other day w/ the radio blasting, windows down and someone wanted to play on the intersate. He should of checked my mood first....I was in no mood to play as he quickly found out. With the cooler temps here, I need to pay a little more attention though as it gets just a little bit quicker and the tires spin a little more....not fun at 70 mph...ok, yes it was! jmn444
Made some fairly good progress today... I think I put in about 6 hours total. toooo many beers to know what step I made it to in the instructions, but swapped valve covers, threw on the new pulleys, ran into a snag with the tensioner, the bolt for the pulley rubs the timing chain cover, so I need to contact thump racing tomorrow and find out why... pics speak for themselves otherswise... nothing too mind blowing compared to the other build threads! jmn444
I gotta say, I had no idea my engine bay was sooooofa king dirty! I had a misconception that I was doing allright keeping that shit clean till I started taking stuff apart!
jmn444
Another productive/drunken night..... Crossover tube painted, was going to do the alternator too, but seemed like more work than I wanted tonight to take it apart and paint it, so I'm opting to wait till the next round of engine bay dress up for that and just get the PA alternator in flat black... Tensioner installed, they all spin free and line up fine to the other pulleys so i'm happy! Intake manifold on, still scraping old gasket off the blower, slow going with aluminum surfaces... but it should go on tomorrow... I also didn't have a 5mm ball allen socket to torque it down anyway, so some tool shopping in the morning before I can go further anyway...
