My v6 plans

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm stuck here at work at 5am, been here since 2... waiting for a call back from IBM, so I figured I'd use this time to do something productive - namely, post about my mustang!

I thought over a lot of plans and ideas about what to do with my v6 - everything from trading it in to get a GT to putting a blower on it, to leaving it stock.

I've decided that I do like my little v6. I don't feel too bad about driving it in bad weather, because it's a $20k car, not a $30k car. The insurance is cheaper. The payments fit my budget. And at the end of the day, it's still a lot of fun. Even this little v6 gets looks from folks when it's cleaned up and polished. It moves quick enough to bring a smile to my face, and that keeps me happy.

However, I would like a bit more... I know, more is never enough. Yet down this road I must go.

I'm not going to drop the cash on a blower - doing that without upgrading the brakes, suspension, etc would be unwise... and a blower doesn't fit in the budget.

So I've settled on adding GT takeoff mufflers (pending shipping info from mikspny - thanks!). I'm also going to get a combo deal from Justin @ vmp for a SCT2 tuner, set of tunes, and a CAI (built by him) for $515.

At that point I'll still have under $22k into my car, and be putting out somewhere mid-way between stock v6 and stock GT power.

While I know there aren't many v6 owners who read this site, I wanted to make this thread to post my progress - including sound clips before & after, and my results.

I likely won't have it on a dyno to get before #'s, but I hope to get after #'s at least.

Hi Tony -

Sounds like a great plan! Reasonable and fun.

You've been bitten by the Bug! Most of us have been, too.

I've got a few goodies goin' on mine, too.

Keep us posted, you hear?

ps - I'm going to have a set of Bassani axle backs available soon if your other deal falls through.

The bug really got going for me when I mentioned some of this to my wife, and she said if it can make my car push her back in the seat like the GT we test drove did, then do it :) So that's my goal.

I saw the changes you have planned - very cool. Sorry it had to come about the way it did, though.

As for the bassani's - I'm not going to the GT for sound, but the airflow, and Justin's #'s show that the GT takeoff will eliminate nearly all of the airflow restriction caused by the stock v6 exhaust in combination with a cai (non FI), as compared to no exhaust at all. So it'd probably be better for the bassani's to go to someone looking to improve the sound of their car. I don't want to fall too much into the category of having a car that sounds way meaner then it is. All show no go isn't my thing.

Thanks though - if for some reason I do put the GT exhaust on and hate the sound, I'll be calling ya :)

The only other thing I've really considered is going to something like a 3.55 or 3.73, I just get concerned about my warranty.

Hope all of this reads right - still at work, no sleep. But it pays for the car, so I can't bitch too much!

Very cool Tony, sounds like you have it all planned out. The V6 Stangs have a lot of potential which people don't realize. The V6 motor puts out almost as much power as the old 5.0L's did. With the right suspension mods, brake upgrade, and some additional power you could have one sweet machine!!! I'm with Ruf on the gears, they are a must. Not sure how far you want to go with your project but I would also recommend a full exhaust to compliment your CAI and other mods.

I'm going to do a simple swap of my single muffler for a GT first, even though I'll be getting two GT takeoff's. I may go to partial or true dual exhaust at some point, but it means cutting my rear valence, and I'm not too keen on that.

The suspension, brakes & gear type mods will have to wait until there's more cash available. My wife just "made" me go out and buy a new 42" LCD television, which wasn't budgeted, so extra cash to throw into my car is a bit short right now.

I've had a couple of folks recommend 3.73's, but I'd be concerned about my mileage on the highway, so was thinking 3.55's. Though my average drive on any given typical week of going to work is almost all stoplights. Maybe once I get the cai, exhaust & tune in, I'll go back and rethink the 3.73's.

The pony pack upgraded the tires to 17".

Nothing wrong with the 17's, I have the same wheels on my car. You can upgrade your tires to a little more agressive 255/50/17 tire once your stockers wear out.

As for the exhaust you don't need to cut the rear bumper of your car. A lot of companies are selling OEM take of parts from the GT Mustangs. Saleen is a big one and the other is Newtakeoff.com

You can get a take off rear bumper from them for $199.00

Here's the link: Mustang GT take off rear bumper

This is every thing you need to convert to duals. It has the bumper cover, the mufflers and the tips.

Nice find. For now I think I'm sticking with staying single - but if I do decide for duals, that's awesome. And I live a block away from a great muffler shop that'll do the work.

Edit: found they have just the bumper, so I'm not hurting myself at all by doing the single exhaust now: GT rear bumper

You can add a "little blue bottle" for cheap. Give you another 75 hp or so when you are feeling frisky.

Not planning on being at the track with it, and I'd be more then a little apprehensive using nos on the street. Legality wise, and a boost of HP I'm not used to.

Tony, like I said, you can have my rear bumper. I will be close to getting the GT/CS front and rear clip. If you pay the $199, then you still have to get it painted, that could add up? Your choice. You will have to paint mine, but you won't have to pay the $200 bones to get it though. I just came back from Fort Wayne last night. Took about 3 hours to get home. If you need anything, let me know. later.

p.s. If you do go with the GT rear bumper, I have both GT exhausts coming off as soon as I can tolerate the temp in the garage to lay on the floor (how much to add heat to the garage???) I have all my parts now, time to put em on! Anyway, you are welcome to anything you want, mufflers have less then 1000 miles on em, later.

The bumper alone is $160, and they have them in alloy. Think painting would be less then that? I have no clue.

If I don't hear back on the muffler's from mikspny about shipping hers, I could definitely meet up and get yours. Would be cool to meet anyway.

Right on, no problem, just let me know if you need anything. Be careful about take-off parts that are already painted. I think I checked into that one time, and they said there might be small defects in it, that is why they took it off. You might want to check into it before you put your hard earned bones down! Later,,,,

P.S. It would be cool to meet when the salt goes away! My car is a garage queen right now, more snow today, this sucks, that freaking ground hog is not worth crap! I am ready for spring!

I'm thinking if I can go out there to pick it up, I can inspect it before I make the purchase.

At least I'm hoping so. Need to call them and find out.

The take off parts aren't because they are deffective. They are from companies such as Saleen, Steeda and Roush who remove the parts and replace them with their own. The OEM parts are then sold to such companies as Diversified Marketing and others who then make the parts avail to the public. Saleen sells their own take off stuff now but they are more expensive than any of the others I've seen. Some of the parts may have small blemishes but nothing more than one wouldn't have from driving their car every day.

But hey, if your going to give Tony your rear bumper then I'd go with that and get it painted. That way they can color match it perfectly.

Talked to the guys at the shop - they want about $150 to weld the y pipe and hang the second GT exhaust, and $300 - $350 labor for the gear change (I'd need to purchase all the parts).

So to do duals it's $150 for the bumper, exhaust is free (Thanks!), $?? for a shop to swap the bumper, $150 for the pipe.

Gears I believe are around $200, and $300 for the labor. Anyone here that can help me figure which gears I need? Brenspeed recommended finding a set of motorsport 3.73's.

And the cash involved means I need to hold off a few months, make one change at a time. whee. I may do tune & cai first, and leave the exhaust stock until I get the bumper and can afford to do duals - I hear running one for a while breaks it in and changes the sound, so it's best to do both at once.

Gonna order a SCT livewire, tunes & cai from Justin @ VMP tomorrow. I think I'm going to go with a single exhaust for now, and wait on the gears... both will happen, just gotta wait till I've got some more cash to do it.

Once I've played with the livewire some I'll post some sort of user experience review of it here.
