Baseline Dyno Run

Recommended Posts

Finally made my way up to Kennedy's Dynotune in North Tonowanda, NY yesterday. Bob Kennedy specializes in Mustangs and has been dynotuning for over 18 years now. He knows a lot about Mustangs and has seen several Shelby GT's and several GT500's in his shop. He explained so much to me and my Dad about the Dynojet and how it works. In detail he explained why the loss of HP from the motor to the wheels is actually 18% for a stick shift. I have always heard either 15% or 20%. He made very good sense of the 18% figure though. On my way up to the shop I was thinking about what to expect and what kind of #'s would make me happy as a baseline. I was expecting somewhere in the mid 270's and hoping to see 280 at the wheels. I have seen numbers on here everywhere in between. Before Bob hooked my car up, he showed me graphs of other Shelby GT's that he has dyno'd in the past and the numbers were all much lower than what I had expected. There was several on there from 262 to 270. At this point I was starting to get somewhat disappointed...hoping to see other numbers around 275-280. He got my Shelby GT on the dyno and I was jumping up and down (pretty much)! Two pulls almost exactly the same and my bone stock SGT is putting down 286.8 at the wheels!!! After he looked at the computer he smiled and said "yours must have been built on a wednesday." He was pretty impressed too. My torque curve isn't pretty though it shows and awesome 305.5 ft/lbs.

So now, hopefully by wednesday I'll have my 3.73 gears, steeda carbon fiber inlet elbow, Brenspeed tune, and Corsa Extreme exhaust installed! I am expecting a gain of 25 but hoping for 30-32 at the wheels with these mods. I will keep this thread updated to show the progress!!!

I'm going to pick up my SGT this afternoon. Hopefully everything has worked out and is what I'm expecting. Just wondering, what RWHP numbers have others seen with their stock SGT's?

Nice base numbers !!!

Thanks! I thought so. I was pretty excited to see it myself.

I went and picked up the car last night. It was pouring rain. First time my SGT has been out in the rain. It was very hard to tell how much difference there is since the roads were pretty much small rivers. I can feel a lot more power for sure and the car is much snappier. So far I'm not sure how I feel about the exhaust though. After talking to the guys at Corsa, I was under the impression that their "extreme" system was loud. It's actually not much different sounding than stock. It is louder, and deeper, but not as much as I was expecting. It sounds much more like a race car now. I will have some better details after I get back home this weekend and drive it on some dry, grippy roads. Next week I should be able to get back to Kennedy's for another dyno run.

After driving the car on some dry pavement, I'm very happy. The gains are very noticeable, especially in the lower RPM's. It's great. I am not completely happy with the exhaust sound. The tone of the Corsa Extreme is awesome but it's not nearly as loud as I was hoping. It is very quiet at idle and quiet up to around 4000 RPM's. I think it probably would be a lot louder on a SC car. I decided that some headers should do the trick so there is a set of Kooks long tube w/Xpipe and high flow cats on the way. They will be installed on thursday. Hopefully back to the dyno on Friday or Sat.

Aw, darn...I was hoping for once to see what just those initial mods would do...but...its great that you'll be getting the headers also.

Sorry! If I had more time and didn't work out of town, I would have been able to. My job keeps me away from my car all year so my time is limited. The dyno shop is 2 hours north of where I live, so that makes it inconvenient also. Haha now i feel bad, there propbably are a few people that wanted to know the same thing.

Just got my car back after the header install. I am all smiles from ear to ear! The sound is amazing!!! The combination of the Kooks long tube and the Corsa Extreme is just awesome! It's loud at all RPMs and has a great tone. The performance is also nothing short of awesome! There was no mistake that the car was noticeably faster and more powerful with the elbow, tune, gears, and exhaust. I drove it for 2 days before the headers were put on and driving it tonight, I can easily feel a jump in power to the wheels. I am so pumped up about the new sound and performance. This weekend I will try to record a sound clip to post. Unfortunately, I won't make it back to the dyno until late next week, but as soon as I do, I'll post the new graph.

Ok so I'm a disappointed man now. The numbers came out to 315. An overall gain of less than 25HP. Bob Kennedy at the dyno shop was guessing a 40HP gain and I was guessing 50 based on my mods. We were both surprised. I have to say that I just don't understand. In doing a lot of researching which included asking a lot of questions on here, watching you tube videos of dynos with the same mods, and talking to the tech reps at the companies that I bought the parts from, I figured at LEAST 40 more at the wheels. The guys at Kooks were more than confident that the headers with high flow cats would give me 25-30. I figured 20. Brenspeed told me over and over again 20-25...So I figured 20. The guys at Corsa went through several dyno numbers with me over the phone from SGT's and SGT-H cars getting about 12. So I figure between 5 and 10. Even if i figure the Corsa Extreme mufflers give me 0, that's still 40 that I expect to pick up. Maybe someone here has an explanation about this. The only thing that Bob at the dyno shop could guess is that the tune could be better modified specifically for my car. He could have worked on a custom tune for it but I didn't have time to leave my car there and I don't feel like putting any more money in it right now. Do any of you have any ideas why I'm only seeing about a 20HP increase? If I don't get many resposes I will start a new topic since it seems like not many are paying attention to this one. Hopefully I can get some answers. At least the car sounds awesome and it feels so much stronger and faster. I'm just not happy with the numbers.

Get a custom dyno tune and go to a shop that is a mustang specialist and if you do not have an open air element other wise know as a cold air intake ; get one before the custom tune. Bol

Kennedy's Dyno Tune does specialize in Mustangs and SGT's come with a CAI. I am going to wait until spring now to have him do a custom tune. I didn't have the time today or a way to leave my car there. There's only about 2, maybe 3 weeks of decent weather left to drive it and I'm going back out of town for work on Monday until at least Thanksgiving. Even then I might be wasting my money on a custom tune since I plan on a SC next year if I can afford it. It would get a full custom tune with the SC install.

Sure doesn't seem right, but I can only base that on what I've read on these forums. I thought I had seen 18hp out of shorty headers and a brenspeed tune in the past.

Doesn't seem right at all. This is killing me. At this point I have no time to have the custom tune done unless I postpone my hood scoop replacement for later, which is scheduled for Friday. I don't know what to do. I'm going to be miserable for the next 5 months through winter if I don't know for sure what it is.

I would go ahead and get the scoop done, then you'll feel better about that item. The HP thing won't bother you as much after a few days pass. If you're going for an SC anyway I would just try and look forward to the big future gain!
