extended warranty

When I took delivery the dealer offered their extended warranty covering 7 years which includes the manufacturers 3 years so essentially you are buying 4 years. He said the cost would be $1250 and a $100 deductible per claim.

I didn't take it but I'm curious if anyone did or has an opinion on it .

I took the extended warranty because this is a combined car with potential major costs for repair and the shelby extended warranty is no more expensive thn the regular mustang a good deal. I have used almost every extended warranty I have bougth. I always buy the manufactures one because I travel a lot. I got the 7yr 60,000 with 50 deductable for $925 plus there is a 150.00 rebate. Just changed the transmission on or freestyle at 38,000 miles would have been over $3500.00. Six month ago changed out the prius central monitor $4200.00. I think it is a good deal for a car twice the standard mustang and the extended warranty is the same.

I sold cars for 10 years - I'm buying one for our GT500. They are not a "scam" some people feel that way when they buy one and never have occasion to use it or something goes wrong and it's not covered. I don't expect to put a whole bunch of miles on our car, so I'm buying a 7 year 36,000 mile service contract, so essentially all I'm buying is 2 years coverage on the drive train and 4 years coverage on the items that will not otherwise be covered past the 3 year bumper to bumper warranty. That's not to say that everything that is covered on the 3 yr bumper to bumper warranty is covered by the service contract.

I saw many people over the years that had transmissions, engines, computers, power window motors, cruise control pieces, etc. replaced by service contracts. The people who had major repairs done under the service contracts were very easy to sell one to when they bought their next car.

The other thing is, if you don't buy it within a cartain time frame they cost more. After a certain point you can't buy a new car service contract either, you have to buy one for a used car and they are more expensive and they don't cover as many items.

Basically, if you don't plan on owning it past the warranty period you don't need one, but if you are gonna keep it forever like I plan to, they are a good investment. They can also be transferred to the next owner which is a nice selling point if it's factory warranty is up by the time you go to sell it, or you can cancel it and get a partial refund.

One thing to keep in mind - some dealers push service contracts from after market companies. Not that they are bad, but on a new car I would recommend sticking with a service contract backed by the manufacturer - Ford, Chrysler, GM etc. It's easier to get things covered, especially if your travelling. There are a few benefits that apply during the basic warranty period also, like rental car allowance. Anyway, they're not for everyone, but I'm buying one.

Can anyone provide specifics on the timeframe for purchase before the costs go up? What is excluded in the factory extended warranty? I'd consider something along the lines of 6 years/100K ( so effectively 3 years extended on most items and 1 year addl and more miles on the engine). My Volvo has basically been bumper to bumper up to 100K (thankfully!) but does exclude wear/tear and some small electric items and the sunroof.

My dealer said price goes up each year on the 1 year anniversary of my purchase. The amount it will go up is determined about a month before that time...so they can't give me that info now. Perhaps each dealer is different...I don't know.

Not sure what you mean what's excluded in the factory extended warranty....I can't answer that since I haven't looked in detail at what's covered.
