Which supercharger for my SGT... aaaaaand GO!

Recommended Posts

K, I'm sure this has been covered before, but do we ever get tired of talking about superchargers? :shift:

Settlement from the 05GT casualty of 2009 is coming soon and I actually heard the wife say... "just spend it on your car!" (Yes, I got it on tape!) :mail::dance:

Always loved something about the Kenne Bell's and that's the direction I'm leaning. I know a lot of you guys are blown. I'd like to be able to get over the 500RWHP/TQ mark... is that possible without major other internal upgrades?

What brand do you have?

What size/model do you have?

What are you putting down?

What additional mods were REQUIRED for you do that setup?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand GO! :happy feet: :lurk:

Mine is a Shelby-installed Kenne Bell (so it is officially GT/SC badged). Great addition, really wakes up the car.

Some will tell you that you have to get the "big brakes". Bull Pucky. If you're driving on the street or drag racing the upgrade is not needed. If you are road racing or auto-cross you need them regardless of whether you have the SC or not. The first time you get brake fade because they heat up, get the upgrade. It has NEVER happened to me. But boy I sure do get down that freeway ramp like a BOH. :)

How much is your budget? All it takes is money! If it's high dollar, spend the bucks and let SAI do the upgrade - probably 12-15K or more! (More if your shooting for 500+ at the rear wheel, as you should be thinking about beefing up your internals for anything 550hp or above at the crank) This route is also good if your looking for a long term investment and maintaining a place in the Shelby register.

Kenne-Bell, Paxton, Whipple/Ford Racing are all good and unique in their own way and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Myself and several others on this forum went "outside of the box" and installed the Edelbrock E-Force charger. I liked this one because of price, (around 7k), relatively easy self-install, "stock" appearance, no modifications to internals or anything else as the kit had everything you need, and power output per PSI. (I haven't been to a tuner yet, but I anticipate 400-ish or better RWHP, which keeps at-the-crank HP within limits)

I'm sure others will chime in any time now...

+1 on the letting SAI do the install if $$ is not an option and if you want to keep the car in the shelby family. If that is not a concern as it has been stated you have some options. Edelbrock, Saleen, SMS, Vortech, Paxton, ProCharger. All are great options, just make sure you go with a company that has a good reputation and good service. I went with a Saleen setup form Brenspeed and I have been super happy with the results. Over 450 rwhp on a 91 tune, and that was prior to installing Long Tube headers. I have not dyno'd it since then. Drive it daily, road race it and occassionaly run the drag strip on Friday nights. If I had it to do over again I would have done a KB or whipple just so I could get the "official" Shelby GT/SC designation. Performance wise they are all fairly close and they make these cars even more fun to drive. Good luck.

Yep a new clutch will also be in order. While you are at it upgrade to the FRP braided clutch line.

Any pick of the one's stated will turn your cutie-pie into a beast!

I liked the SAI installation. Although the Paxton was my 1st choice, I went with the Ford Racing. You can see my numbers below. It runs great even though I loose a little boost when the temperature gets hot in the summer. (One reason to go with a Revan HE system) Basically, nothings coming up behind me unless I let them.

I've decided against the SAI installation (I won't get into it here), but I'm thinking KB 2.6 or FRPP/Whipple 550. The KB is still my favorite and I've got some good local help on installation for that one. Anyone know where the best price is on the KB 2.6 Stage 2 kit? And I will be doing brakes too. Maybe even before the SC, but I want to start figuring it all out now, so I can jump when the $$ comes.

I was reading about the 2.8 Mammoth have you looked at that as an option? Gives you some room for growth.

From what I have read on this forum if you go with the Whipple get the Steeda belt system, they seem to go through belts.

I found a used set of GT500 brakes, upgraded the rotors/pads and installed SS lines and love the outcome. Did it all for under $1000.

Whipple 550 here, do a forum search Mr. Whipple himself posted some pics and some info and I was sold...this is a very good FRPP backed product.

Track day, drag race 20k miles on car NO ISSUES at all....and I still have the stock clutch, traction is the biggest concern in the 1/4.

ANY of them will get the job done, bet on that, but after too much research I went SAI Whipple 550 and could not be any happier.

I did a 12.4 1/4 mile on street tires in my signature last weekend at over 115mph....the car is so fun its unreal!

Road course it is an animal.

Street is neat and I just about daily drive it (unless I need my truck), runs very smooth, well mannered.

You will love any of them however, totally different car afterwards.....happy%20feet.gif

Im biased towards whipple its a solid product r/d done with ford I like the intake placement as well as the dual fuel pumps, The newer whipples come with a new tensioner and no belt problems once set up correctly.

Also get some gt500 brake take-off's excellent bang 4 the buck.

You can see the numbers from my SAI installation of the KB. I agree with everyone else who says any of the power adders will make a big difference. I wanted the Shelby heritage so had it done at the factory when Bud was there.

550 Whipple too and love it. Numbers are below. I am sure that you will be pleased w/ any of the one's listed and it comes down to your personal choice. I too wanted the "registry" for mine, but again that was a personal choice. I know one thing, this car runs like a beast now! :shift::drool: and no problems w/ the set up either as far as belts, etc.

I originally wanted to look at that (big is better right) but according to KB you need to immediately start looking at internals and also their website says you need a taller hood. Not sure I want that. If I can pull 500/500+ from the 2.6L, I'll be happy as a clam. No need (at this point) to grow from there. And as for the brakes, I have thought about getting ANOTHER set of GT500 takeoffs. Yes, another. I bought a set from Miller Motorsports Park about 2 years ago for $600... front calipers, rotors, lines, dust shields, the whole front setup for $600, brand new takeoff. Got em... the didn't fit behind the wheels on my 05GT so they sat on the shelf for 2 years until after she got totalled and I wasn't sure what I'd get as a replacement. Sold them to a local trackhound for $500. Wish I had kept them at this point. Been looking for that front Baer kit lately. Not sure exactly what it is, but I've seen it installed on some local SGTs and I (I know, wrong reason) like the looks of it!

I forgot the sound under boost is truly cool, friends can hear me coming and say that no other car sounds like it going down the street...like a muscled out giant zipping sound...

Is it that KB-like whine? LOVE that sound. I've heard that some of the newer KB's don't have the ol' whine. Hoping whatever i end up with has a little bit of it. Heard a 03 cobra on the way home today that I know was KB'd and that car just sounds absolutely sinister.

You sure you have the right pulley? looks kinda small in in the picture or maybe it's that big ass belt making it look that way. :hysterical: That setup looks clean!

Yes.

Also, I'm not sure about the KB, but the Whipple-Ford Racing canned tune is PERFECT on our cars!

Thats actually really good info. I was just talking to a buddy last night that has an 03 Termy with the KB and he said he has a hard time finding KB certified shops to tune his which is apparently a necessity as his canned tunes had problems. I guess there are only like 5 in the US or something.

Any idea if there is a "Whipple certified tuner" in the Denver area/Mountain region?

I would contact KB directly. They are great to deal with. The tune that came with mine stock (installed at SAI) is great on both the street and the road racing track. But, again, all of the ones you are considering will do a fine job.

Did you do the 2.6L? Is yours stage 1 or stage 2?

One of the differences of the FRPP/Whipple over the KB is the configuration of the air intake. The KB is relocated down near the bumper of the passenger side. The Whipple leaves it pretty much where it is. KB says the air at that location is colder (which I'm sure it is) but accessing the filter will require a lift.

Dan,

Is the Whipple/Ford tune loaded via a hand held programmer or do you have to send of the module to be programmed? I like the ability to switch tunes for daily driving or track configuration. I also like the flexability of changing parameters like axle ratio, tires diameter etc with a hand held. Just curious.

Thanks

Whipple 550HP with 450HP at the wheels on an automatic car. Runs 12.00's at 118-119mph. The FRPP tune is safe and makes awesome power. I saw 9-12lbs. of boost depending on heat and humidity. Driveability is like stock. The best part is the kit looks like factory. Good luck deciding.

Cool. Thanks. So one thing I may have misunderstood was I for some reason understood the Whipple 550 to somehow represent that is produced 550HP... Was that a total misassumption? Don't get me wrong, the many setups I've seen on this forum and thread that are around 450-475HP is awesome, but I guess I thought the W550 was supposed to be more than that. When I was on the KB website yesterday, it looks like the KB 2.6L Stage 1 starts at around 500HP, again supposedly. And the 2.6L Stage 2 purportedly begins at around 525HP. These both apparently on "100% stock spec engines".

http://www.kennebell.net/superchargers/ford/gt05-06_3v/gt05-06_3v.htm

If KB can do that much more power than the Whipple, while I like the prospect of both, the KB seems like the way to go for maximum power, no? And I haven't checked apples to apples, yet, but I think they are around the same price, no?

PS - Thanks for the info Scotty, but why all the yelling?!

Just one more item to clarify and that is if you are aware if the h.p numbers for the kenny bell are at the crank or at the rear wheels. I know with the whipple that there are two diiferent air intakes. If you have 2008 Shelby GT and you go to SAI since they are a manufacture they had to have an enclosed air filter intake because of the CARB emission certification from the EPA. However, now that SAI has a new modification shop they can do an open air filter or more commonly know as a cold ait intake an possible a little more rwhp. All the other Shelby approved mod shops can give you the cold air intake no matter what year your Shelby GT is.
