texican
I'm looking for a stripe kit for a 2010 GT500 (on Ebay) but only see stripe kits to to 2009. Are they the same and will they fit ? Are there any vendors that I should avoid due to quality / fit issues ? Thanks in advance Mike

Thanks in advance Mike Mike--i had a bad experience with a Trans Am buying aftermarket stripes. After 2 years they started cracking. They were half the price of the OEM stripes, but not as good. To me, id stick with the Ford stripes--unless the seller gives you a money back warranty that lasts 5 years or more. And putting stripes on is a real PITA, Ford has a lining up laser deal at some of their dealerships that puts them on perfectly.Ask the guy who sold you the car to get the stripes at his costs, and put them on for you
2nd2none
just an fyi, if you do get stripes from the dealer they are very expensive. I had to replace one small piece on the rear bumper and it cost about $125 just for the sticker and I had to put it on myself. I would guess if you bought the whole stipe kit from the dealer it would easily be over $1000. not sure how much the dealer cost is on them

I can't remember if that was dealer cost but I do remember it was not full MSRP. Look around for aftermarket stripe companies. I just reported on one I found here in Co. Springs that did the complete OTT stripes on a 2010 Mustang GT for $500 (not including side rocker stripes). It is a very nice high quality job (I will try to attach a photo from my cell phone). And from looking at them, they are easily as thick as OEM stripes but I do not know the "year rating" (5-year stripes, 8-year stripes, etc.) of them. But for 500 bucks, you could do a stripe job every 5 years and still be money ahead of paying $1500 for a 8-year stripe job! Phill

2010KonaBlueGT
Dam, for $1500, can't you just have them painted on?? Shelby charges $4500 for the painted stripe option on the GT350 (vs the standard vinyl stripes). And that's just blue stripes on a white car. So no, I don't think you'd find a shop to paint stripes on a car for $1500 although I've never checked. Phill

Phill Phill, I had a couple of high end custom paint shops here in the S.F. Bay Area quote painted stripes for my delete... and they both were within $100 of $4,500 out the door. 2010KonaBlueGT
I had a couple of high end custom paint shops here in the S.F. Bay Area quote painted stripes for my delete... and they both were within $100 of $4,500 out the door. A lot of work goes into prep, paint and clear. Which was exactly my point... $1500 won't get you a set of painted stripes, even *plain* ones. But in all fairness to your point, the SF Bay area has an extreamly high labor rate for automotive related labor. For example: I worked in Salinas (~125 miles So.of SF for them that don't know) at a high-end (Delco-Tech) Auto Repair shop. That rate ($55.00 per hr) was comparable to the Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel, Seaside and Marina (i.e. Monterey Peninnsula) area which has a pretty high cost of living too (Pebble Beach/Carmel have a VERY high COL) In 1989, the last full year I worked as a Auto Tech before retirement, we were charging $55.00 per hour, flat-rate (i.e. per the Mitchell flat-rate labor guide). At that time (Dec. '89) I was attending the GM Training Center in San Leandro for my GM Master Tech training and staying with my family in the East Bay (Hayward). We had quite a few Tech's in school that worked right in San Fran and we were able to compare labor rates (techs love to talk about how much/little they make!). At that time the going labor rate in SF was $95-$125 per hour for the same work we did in Salinas. AND, parts got a greater mark-up too (our shop generally had a 40% margin of profit increase, which is a 67% mark-up). $95 per hr. for the 'cheap shops' and $125.00+ for the more expensive shops. I shudder to think what the labor rate in SF is today since in Salinas it's at or near the $95.00 per hr. rate that SF was at in 1989/1990! Now having said that, in all fairness I don't think the price you're quoting is DOUBLE what is normal is but it may likely be a little more (maybe you could get them for ~$4K outside of SF...MAYBE??? idnk). So for the people who sh*t themselves when Shelby tells them that painted stripes are a $4500 option....they are not really out of line! That is 'about' the going price for a good quality set of painted stripes. And that ain't nuthin' fancy! Yeah yeah yeah, I know....someone is gonna pop up and tell me how their buddy will do it for a grand (or some such number) but just remember...."you get what you pay for" (in MOST cases). Oh, and just one more thing...... Phill

I will get back to you.....HAWKBARR Yeah, please let me know what you find. After seeing pictures of the 2011 Kona Blue/White Super Snake, I may have my OEM stripes removed and have a thin-THICK-thin stripe installed on the car with my stock GT500 hood. I think the Blue w/White stripe looks absolutely KILLER. I just noticed that Ford now has a optional stripe kit for the Mustang GT that matches the Super Snake stripe (thin-THICK-thin). It is shown in the FoMoCo Custom Accessories catalog on page 36. It shows it on a Red GT with matte black stripe (with a Super Snake style "looking" hood scoop, but the opening is further back on the hood). I have no intention of "cloning" a Super Snake but when ya think about it, when I'm done modifying my car I'll have a GT500 with a polished FRPP/Whipple 2.9L (750HP) supercharger, the FRPP FR3 handling pack, Alcoa 20" Dura-brite wheels on a Kona Blue GT500 with a White thin-THICK-think OTT stripe package on it.....Which the exception of adding a Super Snake hood (which is a distinct possibility), I would basically have a Super Snake but at less than half the price of the 'official' upgrade. Oh yeah, but I wouldn't have that little plaque under the hood with a CSM number on it! LOL Or I could just trade it in on that 2011 due to arrive next month and get it "Snaked".......... After reading this forum since buying the car and soaking in everything I can I've finally started spending money on it to get it where I want it. I'm just now starting to get excited about it! And I still want a ride in that '11 you have! See ya, Phill

Year One had AM stripe kits but I never used theirs. NOS is the way to go when you have something *that* collectable (a '70 TA is VERY collectable). Thanks, Rod I'm not sure if they have pre-made stripes or not. What I was told is, they have a machine that goes over the car from end to end and scans it. Think of a machine like you see at a car wash where your car sits stationary and the machine moved over it and down both sides (a big inverted U). They pull the car in, run the scanner over it and then build your stripes on a computer. Once you say "done" they click a button and a plotter cuts the stripes. I see they do the "clear bra" so I assume it's the same technique as that (as for scanning) but it will do stripes too. And he said side stripes, rocker stripes, hood, roof, trunk, OTT, whatever I wanted, I could get. I suppose if they have a Super Snake scan already in their database then can cut the stripes. OR, I ASSUME that you could tell them "I want a <black/white/blue/red/etc> double/single stripe, X inches wide and Y inches long with N inches between the two" and get them made. I have a good friend that is a sign painter. He has a scanner and a plotter and he can pretty much make anything you want in vinyl. I don't see where it would be that hard to find someone else like Drive-in Autosound to make a set of stripes for you. Unfortunately for me, he's in far Northern CA and I haven't seen him in 15-20 years so I'd not even think of calling him out of the blue to ask for a favor (he was also my primary sponsor when we raced). Rod_Michel
Thank You for taking the time to explain how they can customize stripes for our cars. This sounds like they have a CCM machine that measures coordinates on a 3D grid which means the fit should be as good as factory if not better. This past spring I added 3/16" black vinyl stripes along the edges of the factory red stripes and it totally changed the appearance of the car for the better. That said, my work was so-so as compared to a professional outfit so it may be worthwhile to have them redo these accent stripes. Will give them a call soon to discuss logistics, pricing, etc... I used to live in Denver and have been to the Springs alot, perhaps before the end of the summer when the weather turns bad, I could take a road trip and have them stripe the SS hood. Am looking to upgrade the SC and thinking about a KB 3.6LC unit. Thanks Again and Respectfully, Rod I'm not sure if they have pre-made stripes or not. HTH, Phill UPDATE: PHill, I called Susan at Drive In Autosound today. She said they can do a GT500 with OTT AND Rocker Panel stripes for $900 total. So if they quoted you $500 for OTT only, thats $400 for rockers. Still a good deal. Would take 8 hours. I also asked if they could do a 2011 SVTPP stripe package and they said yes. (I would do the standard 2010 package even though I have the PP cause I like the wider stripes.) But they can build whatever width stripes the customer wants. I'll be going down there in the next couple of weeks to check them out. The guy who has worked on the Shelbys won't be back until 9/1 ish. Anyway, FWIW. -Barry
