Street and Open Track 5.0L

Listing this for a friend of mine, a beautiful 1988 Mustang 5.0 that has a long list of mods.

This car has been trailered for the past few years to NorCal SAAC events, but is street legal. Done right (like this car is), these Fox bodied cars are excellent open trackers. Check out the pix and mods list. Try building a car like this for the asking price, you can't. If you want to get into track days, and don't want to use your daily driver, then you have to consider this.

For Sale:

A red 1988 Ford Mustang LX coupe, originally owned by Charlie Bruno of Charlie’s Mustangs of San Jose, as his daily driver. This mustang has been street driven and run at open track events with Nor Cal SAAC and Green Flag Racing for the last 7 years. It was repainted the factory red color in 2002. It is currently non-opted with the CA DMV. All smog devices and catalytic converters (new in 2002) are installed and functional. It has a full factory interior, with an Auto Power roll bar – with 4 mounting points. Simpson 5 point harnesses on the factory front seats. The rear seat is in place, but difficult to use due to the roll bar cross bar. A Kenwood am/fm/cd player with upgraded speakers (6) and electric antenna. Autometer electric oil pressure and water temperature gauges in A-pillar pod, Autometer Monster Tach on dash.

The motor was rebuilt in (1/06) (4,819 miles on motor) by Dinan of Morgan Hill, CA (Dusty Renteria)l, Joe Langarica assembled the motor. It now has a Sportsman block, hardened factory crank, slightly longer rods and Mahle pistons. It is 312 cid which Bob Gromm of Gromm Racing Heads and Engines calls a “tweener” motor as it is between a 306 and a 331 cid.

During its rebuild the following items were replaced:

O2 sensors, fuel filter (6/09), coolant temp sensor, 3 core brass/copper radiator was hot tanked, new water pump (6/09), sparkplugs, cap, rotor, PCV and hoses, injectors serviced, TPS

Additional parts on motor:

Canton 7 quart track oil pan, FMS silicon hoses, MSD digital-6 plus ignition, FMS 24 lbs injectors with Proflow mass air, FMS 65mm throttle body, 67mm EGR spacer, Edelbrock #6037 ported aluminum heads, FMS 1.72 roller rockers, FMS E303 Cam, JBA ceramic coated shorty headers, 3 chamber Flowmaster mufflers (passes sound at Laguna), Bassani X-pipe

EFI tuning and piggyback chip made by Byron at Race Systems and the Mustang Ranch provided the dyno. Recent dyno run by MCE Racing at Thunder Hill in 2008: 344 ft lbs of torque @ 3500 rpm, 282 HP @ 5000 rpm. On the street it runs on pump premium and it likes a mix of 100 octane and pump premium at the track.

Optima red top battery relocated to the truck, with shut off

Modern Driveline serviced the T5 Z-series transmission (1/06), including resurfacing the Aluminum flywheel, new Kevlar clutch, new pressure plate, new T/O bearing, new pilot bearing, aftermarket shifter, Firewall clutch cable adjuster, redline synthetic fluid, with regular changes

The vehicle has a set of street tires on custom modified 16” Pony wheels to clear the 13” brakes. Tires are 255/50/ZR/16 Bridgestone Potenza RE71

Track tires (6 tires and rims) are on Cobra R model 17” rims with KumhoV700 Victor racer tires 275/40ZR17

Baer brakes with modified factory spindle, 13” rotors in the front and11” rotors in the rear, with “unused-as-yet” new hubs, rotors, and Hawk Performance HPS Brake pads in the front. Brake system flushed and filled with fresh Motul fluid in (6/09)

Griggs K-member, South Coast Mustangs tubular lower arms, Griggs caster/camber plates, Griggs bumpster kit, swaybar relocators, Griggs coilovers in the front with 350 lbs springs. Rear coilovers; unknown brand

Suspension Techniques replacement larger front and rear swaybars

Koni red front struts and rear/shocks

Maier Racing tower brace

Global West subframes, with extensive Charlie Bruno uni-body strengthening and welding

Ford Remanufactured steering rack and pinion installed (2/06) with Flaming River steering shaft

8.8 rear end with 3:27 gears, Auburn locker, with Ground pounder rear differential cover and girdle re-enforcement

Global West lower rear arms and unknown aftermarket upper arm strengtheners

Large aftermarket power steering cooler

Asking $11,000.00 OBO, other pictures are available, no trades please. Will consider all reasonable offers.

How many owners has the car had and how many miles are on the odometer?

I was incorrect, 3 owners, and the car has 175k on the clock, of course, the drivetrain has been fully sorted as stated in the original post. Give Doug an email, and he'll be happy to answer any of your questions. He was out with at at Sears Point last weekend at SAAC-35 and the car ran and sounded strong.
