Had my first race today...

BEEKAY GT500

Recommended Posts

Finally had a chance to race someone today. It was a SS Camaro (late model). The guy was cool. He pulled up behind me an reved his engine- he wanted to see if I would bite. Of course I did. He pulled up next time and I rolled down my window. He was really complementing the GT500 asking if it was powerful. I coul tell off the bat he had at least a cam & exhaust in the car. It had a choppy idle. I asked him what he had his car dyoned. His response was yeah- 361 at the wheels. I figure no match right- I have to be close to/if not at 500 with my Evo stage 1. I let him get in front of me as we left the light so we could roll up beside each other and go from a roll. I was thinking 361- I'll let him get out in front of me. I was in 2nd from a 25 mph roll. I knew first would be a traction problem but I figured I would pull on him easy. I gave him 2 honks and he gives 2 back. I let him take off first and he gets a good jump and is out by 2-3 car lengths. I mash it and have no traction issues. I was pulling him in- barely. We got to about 100 (I don't know for sure as I was not about to look down) before we had to let off. At the end he had me by 2-2.5 car lengths. As I pulled up next to him I asked him what he had. He said he had a cam only. Then I said is that all? He replied back I also have an intake manifold. I said you are only at 361? He said yeah. Cars were piling up behind us as we talked through our windows so we had to get going. The guy was real cool but it was funny how his story changed.

The GT500 pulled well. No tire spin no missed 3rd gear. I just figured if he did have 361 I should pull on him easy. My question to the forum- Was he BS'n about just having 361rwhp or did I take him lightly by launching from 2nd? Next race I need to be prepared.

Probably spraying it. I had a 99 SS. It came stock rated at 345 with the SLP package, but the LS1's were very conservitively rated. If he had cams and an intake he was over 400 HP at the crank for sure. The car is lighter too than the GT500. My guess if he wasnt spraying is that he had a set of gears as well as the cam and intake. Dont feel bad I took one for the team last week!! Went down hard to a GT2 Porsche running 19lb of boost and over 650+ HP. Walked me like a dog!

Giving anyone the jump is asking for trouble. A jump, much less a car length or two is suicide. That's about 2 seconds' worth in the 1/4 mile (consider not just the head start but the fact that he now has momentum on his side). My guess is that if you had an even start you'd have been all over him.

...and, on the street, no one is telling the truth (and you thought car salesmen were bad...)

Guess its pulley time ...... get me aroound 560 to 570rwhp .... that should get me close to 700 crank HP

tires ( traction ) first .. than the Stage II kit ! :happy feet:

what's the weight difference? There could be a lot of factors that 361 may be a little BS, he may have had some juice, it may be set up with gears to run the quarter a lot faster but his tope end may have been 120 where as you have 3 gears left. Too much left to wonder about to say, but I think it shows that if you decide to race then race. Be cool after but as the winner :)

Coming from an experienced street racer... don't ever believe that you are getting the complete truth from another racer especially from the 'Brand X' boys. My guess is he had nitrous and steeper gears as well. Never give anyone you don't know personally a head start.

Haha - fast don't fix ugly huh?

Exactly why do you think they stopped making them!!

I know alot of guys like that- that have a beater camaro or any GM product that looks like rat trap but all the effort and money is in the motor- then tell everyone it just has a cam in it or something. They then go after the guys with the nice shiny cars.

I was one of those guys :) I had a not so handsome 1978 Mustnag II with a 302 in it and in primer. had gears, cams, upgraded carb etc. I loved theat POS and had more fun eating things that were much nicer for lunch as a HS kid what more could you want. I bought it used for cery cheap - like $350 bucks and all i had to do on it was the brakes.

but man was it ugly - FInally painted it black but it was still an ugly little car - but it moved for it's 10 mpg :) with a strong wind behind it and on a slight down hill run.

I am a fan of the sleeper cars - but not willing to drive around in the POS anymore. I got a job so i could have nice things.

cgoeschel,

not that it makes you feel any better but.... that gt2 porsche is a "slight" bit more pricy too at around 100k... he should be able to walk you stock for stock. i would bet after about 5k in mods, you might be holding the leash. for the team, you have my thanks for your efforts!

ice, I am one of those guys also. I owned a 1977 Cobra II, black with gold stripes, I am going to round up some pics and try to post it on here. It truly was a sharp looking car in its day and really thought that thing could fly. I think it had 138 HP (if I'm not mistaken). I wonder if anybody else will admit they owned one of these cars.

The guy was very cool....congratulated me on the SHELBY!! I told him I always wanted to race one of those GT2's. Had a pretty good idea from the roll race we had first (up to the light) that I was going to lose from the dig at the light (the custom roll cage he had helped me figure that out too). I held in there pretty good on the roll race since it took that extra second to spool the turbo on his car and I was in boost right away. Stayed mostly with him from 2nd to the top of 3rd and then he slowly crept away. From the light, he launched hard and the rear engine rear drive layout just laid down the traction and he was gone right off the bat. Put 2 cars on me just past the intersection and then again just pulled away. Oh well, it was a blast and when I get that KB we're going to have to try it again!! Hopefully on a roll again! Out of a dig the poor KB is just going to spin like crazy!

I think we just need to send some people to driving school. If I lost to a Camaro in a Shelby I would never tell anyone and sell the car.

yup- no more head starts. i suppose i was just a bit too confident. :banghead:

i was too naive. should have known better by the sound at idle.

gt500's will get beat. i'm not going to hide from the truth. if i get beat then fine. if i win i'll talk just the same. i hope i get a chance at redemtpion with him.

Owned? Try still own. My beloved 1977 Cobra II was my first car, and I have owned if for 20 years now. I will NEVER part with it, I will pass it on to my kid (who is due in September). I also have a 1978 King Cobra which I am in the middle of building a wicked 351W for. By May or so, I should be surprising a lot of people with that one...

I have some kids screwing with me in their 454 SS. They rollup and one of sticks his head out the window and says"How much horsepower?" I tell him 500 and he says he doesn't believe it. I ignore him. He says "How fast is it?" I, of course, reply that its faster than "that piece of s :censored: t he is driving. He then replys with "Wanna race?" I then reply with "How money do you have?" Response was I don't race for money and mine was I don't race for free. The stop light turns green, he lays into it real hard and I let him go. About a mile down the road, a cop has him stopped. I drive by and give him a little toot. The cop looks over and gives me a little wave. :hysterical2::hysterical2::hysterical2:

I knew this area is heavily patrolled and I wasn't getting a drag racing ticket. There are places you just don't want to get pulled into a race. Not that I would ever do that :hysterical:

I believe they call it experience, wisdom, been there done that syndrome. I hope I keep my head if I'm in the same situation with mine. I usually don't lose it, but if they piss me off then that's different. :hysterical:

Heh, I'm 17 and I'm building a 76 Cobra II with my father. I'll have fun in it, that's for sure
