davegt500
When we buy one of those handheld tuners, like the SCT Touchscreen for example, how does the owner go about getting a tune or a modification of an existing tune or a custom tune to correct a specific prob like for instance the recent problem a member had of chattering noise with the AC on which was cured by his tuner bumping up the idle speed when the AC is on? How does one get "hooked up" in the first place with "ones tuner"? How does someone go about finding a tuner type anyway? In other words, how does this new world work? Can we with one of these handheld units do all that a "Tuner" does? Or is it all a special world inhabited by EE grads that we have to "hookup with" or something? Pardon my ignorance...trying to get up to speed. Probably no hurry though, being an inhabitant of "Material Hold World".....12 weeks and counting. SCT sells two types of handheld tuners: The SF3 has preprogrammed tunes created by SCT. The X3 is sort of a blank slate version that vendors use to load their custom tunes and sell to you. Do not attempt to tune your car with a handheld yourself. The number of variables in the computer and sensor systems are huge. I recommend VMPtuning.com. For about $450.00 you'll get up to 3 tunes loaded on an X3 which is pretty much a plug and play (there are a few screens to select, but it is simple). VMP was one of the early tuners using his car as a test bed. He has created thousands of tunes for people and many years ago he began tuning while employed by SCT. Really am liking the SCT Touchscreen from what little I can see about it on-line. Still, though, how do people find the people who do all this "Tuning"? Is there like a "Central Place" on-line where all those who do automotive performance tuning can be found? For instance if I bought a single "thing" for the engine (Anything just for example maybe a different EGR valve set-up "thing" (just for example) and wanted it "integrated" within all the drivetrain systemry how would I find the people who do just that? Get my drift, anyone??

PistolWhip
The tuning business is run almost exclusively by word of mouth and customer reports on internet forums like this one. If you spend a couple of days researching different Mustang web forums, you'll find a common theme with probably the top 10% of the tuners in the business. You'll see their names all over the web and you'll most likely see tons of testimonials from customers that used their services. There's not a whole lot of other marketing or advertising needed because the good one's will be obvious with all the positive feedback. I personally have been using Matt Hill for years (Matt Hill Motorsports), but you can also search for John Lund, Horsepower by Herman, Evolution Performance, Justin at VMP, Runnin With The Devil (RWTD), etc... Most of the good one's seem to share some of their secrets with each other and remain on a pretty level playing field because of it.
