Stripes, stripes, and MORE stripes...

I hope an experienced GT500 owner can offer some guidance.

It's clear to me that the SVT Performance Package is essential to maximizing the GT500's potential. The only thing I don't like about the SVT Performance Package (apart from the fact that you have to spend $3,495 just go gain access to a 3.73 rear axle) is the limited (and often odd) selection of stripe options available.

I simply don't like any of the available choices, but I don't know the best way to proceed. From a collector's standpoint, is the future value of the vehicle enhanced (or preserved) by any stripes matching those that are referenced on the window sticker? Would opting for the "Stripe Delete" be less preferable in the future or penalize its value?

I'm really at a crossroads as the GT500 I've always dreamed of was White with Grabber Blue stripes or even Race Red, but the red has been replaced by Colorado Red, a darker shade that I just don't like. I may find myself opting for Grabber Blue or Race Red paint just to have an SVT stripe combination I find inoffensive.

Forgive me if this seems like a stupid question. This is my first GT500, and I just don't want to make a decision I later discover I shouldn't have made (or that I could have done differently that would have been much better for the overall value of the vehicle). Or does it really not matter?

Thanks!

I opted for a stripe delete 2011 black GT500 with the PP, and I am in the process if having flat/satin black stripes in the SVTPP style made. I just couldn't do the red ones. I figures I get the colors I want and it is easily returned to factory by pulling off the striping kit.

I would not give "value" a second thought. When you look at what many 2007 owners had to pay over MSRP and then look at resale/trade in prices there is very little allowance for anything other than mileage.

Make the car yours and enjoy the ride.

Congratulations. I LOVE the black-on-black. The photo shoot in the brochure of the SVTPP Black w/Red Stripe looks amazing, but I just couldn't imagine it in real-life either. It's kind of like one of those cartoon porn stars.

You make a very valid point about ordering stripe delete and just striping/removing to taste. That seems like the best way to ensure the car can always be returned to its window sticker state. Of course, the "rub" is paying for striping that one could receive for free (but in the wrong color), and the fact that the stripe color dictates the seat insert color, the bastards.

I'm truly on the fence. I SO wanted a white with grabber blue stripe, but I don't want back inserts and the seats wouldn't match the stripe. My choices are between Race Red and Grabber Blue, and I'll probably stripe them to provide me with white inserts and just live with it.

It's really a shame the SVTPP means the palette gets so restricted and the inserts are coupled to the stripe color for absolutely no good reason whatsoever. I hope the Ford marketing wizards know something I don't that will make it worth a bunch more someday in the future. :)

As much as I love everything that will make the GT500 so terrific to own, I'll never be able to stare a white GT with red interior in the face without a twinge of regret.

Thanks!

Just get it with stripes and see if it grows on you. If you don't like it remove them and stripe them how you want to or go delete. You might as well get the stripes since you are paying for them either way. Ford is making extra money off the stripe delete folks :)

Don't knock the stripes until you see them in person. I HATED them from pictures, hated them enough that I ordered a second car while I was still waiting for the first to show up. As luck would have it the performance pack car showed up first...gorgeous in person.

Secondly I know a lot of the stripe options seem very offensive and the immediate global reaction, including my own, was to question Ford's sanity. Then the cars started showing up and people started putting up pictures. The color schemes are not only largely inoffensive but some are just stunning.

I'm of the opinion that you should just get what you want. Don't worry about re-sale value. Even if the cars have any collectibility 25 years down the line I don't think striped or not striped would have a serious effect on the value of the vehicle. It's more likely the cars will not be collectible and in that case...you should still just get what you want. Whatever you end up deciding on the price of admission is definately worth it. Every GT500 has the same engine so you really can't go wrong.

Totally agree with the folks that say get what pleases you and don't worry about value down the road.

I was specifically looking for either Kona Blue or Race Red without stripes - got my Kona Blue SVTPP stripe delete and couldn't be happier. The car is very distinctly a Shelby for those in the know, and for the general public who think it's just another Mustang, who cares. I bought the car to drive it, and the less attention it attracts the better.

Even if you take the stripes off (I like the seat stripes) they are just stickers and can easily be put back on if the car is worth a lot more with them on 25 years in the future.

I recently seen a rusted out 66 GT350 with no interior or transmission sell for 40 grand, so I dont think some vinyl stripes missing will hurt the value much if these are ever worth anything down the road.

It will be twenty five plus years before these cars start to appreciate. So ask yourself a question, will you still owm it? No one should be buying one of these now for its collectability. If thats what you want, wait five years and buy a low mileage 2011 at a significant savings.

This is my first post as I just joined this evening, and I've been preparing to make the big purchase very soon. I'll confess that I've spent some time agonizing over color choices.

First off, I agree that collect-ability is not on the radar for any of us purchasing a 2011 GT 500. My vote is that you go for the color combination that floats your boat.

Speaking of colors, I'd appreciate some feedback on what I'm considering. I'm not a big fan of the stripes on the seats, nor do I want loud attention-grabbing stripes on the exterior - I'd prefer exterior stripes that don't contrast TOO much with the paint color. So, my plan is to order a Kona Blue with stripe delete - that will get me the all-black seats. Then I'm thinking of applying a set of satin black rocker and over-the-top le mans stripes. So my question to you is, how would a Kona Blue Shelby with satin black stripes grab you? Do you think it would be a good-looking color combination, or would it detract from the true Shelby look since it's not a factory color combination? I see that this combination has been available for the GT in the past, but never the Shelby.

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts as I work out the final details on what to order!

Welcome to Team Shelby sweetstang !!

First, barring any other team members who have a Kona with black stripes who may check in, I would suggest looking at the Shelby American link here for a look at a Kona Blue/black striped Super Snake.

http://shelbyamerican.com/vehicles/2010SS.asp

Remember, as previous posters said, its all personal preference so get or create what you want. You will love the Kona Blue. With a good wax job it looks a foot deep!

On a related topic, do others on this thread know if it is possible to order an aftermarket stripe package for a GT500 from either Shelby or Ford ? Just curious...

As Hawkbarr mentioned the SuperSnake gets the black stripes..and I love the look of them on the Kona Blue paint! I would even consider getting the actual SuperSnake type stripes vs. stock GT500 or SVT PP ones. That would be my vote.

I am in the same boat as you. I have the Kona Blue stripe delete and have been going through endless debates as to what color stripes to put on the car. I like the car without the stripes but feel that the traditional Shelby look is missing without them. I am currently thinking about going with a gunmetal grey stripes for the car to match the SVTPP rims. I might event accent it with a think black stripe similar to the accents on the factory SVTPP stripes. What we really need is to get a good picture of a Kona Blue with stripes from different angels and see if someone can photoshop some different colors on.

I am a very visual person so I have a hard time pulling a trigger on something without seeing it first. Good luck with your decision.

the strpes on the seats are sewn on inserts--im sure a good seat guy could take them off if you dont care for them, then youd have all black or any color you want. The seat guy Ive used can put the covers back on really tight so i dont thin youd be able to tell they were changed. Also, i priced extra stripes to have just in case 10 years from now i get hit and theres no stripes around, and they are pretty expensive as a Ford Part---bob

Yes after seeing the stripes in person I definitely like them. I would say get the stripes and if you truly dont like them you can take them off. I would of done this in hindsight. I also got a quote form a dealership regarding the SVTPP stripes and it was $1300. Kevin Casey a parts guy in California, a frequent member on a different forum, told me $975 shipped and that is by far the cheapest i got. Still deciding if I want to go that route. But would of been much easier and lest costly to take off then add on

If you add stripes would you put on the SVTPP stripes or the traditional Shelby stripes? I like the traditional but the SVTPP stripes have grown on me.

Those prices I quoted were for the SVTPP stripes. That's what I'm still deciding. Originally I wanted to get the normal ones that's why I got the stripe delete. But bow I'm not sure.

Ewingfly,

Looks like your car is black ? What color stripes are you considering ? Those with black or white cars have the choice of almost any color and it will usually work. (Obviously I am partial to white...LOL!)

Hey Hawkbarr,

I was hanging out Phil Longs Motor City Ford (my local dealer for those that don't know) while I was having my oil changed on my GT500 the other day. My wife came by to pick me up but they put me down as a "customer wait" so instead of her just heading back home we walked around the lot checking out the new cars they have in stock. They have tons of the new 5.0's but they also have a 2011 5.0 liter Roush Stage 2 on the floor, in Red...MAN, talk about a freakin' beauty (so was the ADM).

Anyway, on the front line they had a Grabber Blue Mustang V-6 or GT (can't remember which). But what made it stick out was that it had double White Over The Top/OTT GT500 type stripes on it. Hmm, that's odd...never seen one of those before. I checked it out pretty closely because I'd never seen a plain jane Mustang with the GT500 type OTT stripes on it.

I was talking with Robert Barnes about my possible plans to add a Super Snake or KR style hood to my car but I wanted to keep the double White OTT stripes, ala the Patriot OR a SS type WHITE stripe the full length of the car. I told him about my dealings with Shelby and their flat-out refusal to put anything but their thin-THICK-thin matte black SS stripe on my Kona Blue car and how from everything I've heard the OEM GT500 OTT stripes are $1500.oo MINIMUM from the dealer (withOUT intallation).

He said "come here" and we walked over to the front window that overlooks the front line. He pointed to the Grabber Blue Mustang with the OTT stripes that I noticed earlier. He said, "You see that? That's 500 bucks right there.". Being a little confused by the low price I said, "what, for the trunk lid?". He says "NO, THAT right there".....still confused I say, "for the rear valance?" He says "NO, FOR THE WHOLE CAR!". 500 bucks to have double OTT white stripes put on the car, parts & labor...

He told me there is a place right down the street from Phil Long Ford that made, cut and installed the stripes for 500 bucks...and that was what Phil Long was charging the buyer (i.e. it cost Phil Long LESS THAN 500!).

He said they have a machine that goes over the car and scans the car from bumper to bumper then cuts the stripe sections to match each section of the car, then they install it. He said I can get ANY color (including the elusive "KR exclusive light blue") stripe/s I want, I can get any combonation (double OTT, single OTT, thin-THICK-think OTT, etc.) of stripes I want....for $500.

I'll be stopping into the place when I go back to order my Roush De-gas bottle (the oversized intercooler reserviour Roush uses on his 427R's) and I'll see if I can get more information on their products.

But in the mean time, for all of you that are considering paying big bucks for OE or OE style stripes, I figure if there is a place like that here in Co. Springs, there should (WILL) be others around the country.

More as I get it,

Phill Pollard

So as this might have been discussed before, it all comes down to one word: Branding!

Recall that the official color of Ford is blue, and the official color of SVT is: RED! (the SVT logo is also red).

Note that almost all Ford Racing equipment is blue (in some form or another) and the trend seems to be that all SVT-branded items are red. Note that the shocks, struts, springs and other items related to the SVT Performance Pack option are (where possible) colored red. This is where the branding is being implemented, to the extent that they can, all SVT related items are red.

From the official 2011 GT500 order guide, all cars equipped with the SVT PP come with the following stripe packages only:

Grabber Blue --> White stripes w/black trim edge

Race Red --> White stripes w/black trim edge

Black --> Red stripes w/silver trim edge

Kona Blue --> Red stripes w/silver trim edge

Performance White --> Red stripes w/black trim edge

Sterling Grey Metallic --> Red stripes w/black trim edge

Ingot Silver Metallic --> Red stripes w/black trim edge

Note the predominance of RED stripes, where applicable (red stripes on a red car would look odd, etc..). Of the seven paint colors available on a 2011 GT500, 5 come with red stripes. The remaining two, Grabber Blue and Race Red come with the white SVT stripes.

Interestingly, I get the no-red-on-red choice, but wondering why they allowed white SVT stripes on the Grabber Blue instead of the red SVT stripes? Maybe they felt the Grabber Blue with red SVT stripes wouldn't sell as well as the white SVT stripes, or preventing the Race Red from being the lone car with white SVT stripes.

Thanks Phill. That is REAL interesting!! Do they also do the rocker panel 'GT500' stripes also or just OTT stripes? Are they vinyl like the factory stripes ? I just traded my '10 Kona/White for an '11 black stripe delete car so am interested in either white or grabber blue stripes. Just a stop gap measure until I get the cash to supersnake it. So $500 for OTT stripes are attractive. So PLEASE keep me posted. I will drive my car down there and have it done. Thank you sir! -HAWKBARR

I did not look down the side to see if it had the rocker stripes. Didn't cross my mind until later. If the car is still there when I go back for the de-gas bottle I'll check it out a little closer. I also need to ask Robert the business name because when I went "down the block to the corner" I couldn't find it. I wanted to get some business cards.

The stripes looked FACTORY ORGINAL. I did not ask about what they were made of, just assumed vinyl. If Robert didn't tell me they were AM, I would have *never* known.

Heck, I was thinkin' about pulling the white stripes off of my 2010 Kona car and putting on a set of the SVTPP 2011 style red stripes w/accents! I'll have the blue cam covers under the hood with a polished 2.9L Whipple......HA! A 2011 *CLONE*! LOL

I figure it's only 500 bucks each way so if/when I ever wanted to put my car back to OEM look, it's just another 500 clams (no biggie in the big picture).

So dang...ya already traded off the Blue car? Did you keep the puffer for the '11 or did it go with the '10?

We still need'a hook up so now instead of seeing how a 2.3 feels, I can check out how a '11 looks! Did you get the PP option? I'd LOVE to feel the difference between the two (std. 2010 vs. PP 2011)

Oh, and when we finally meet I can tell you how much I got the 2.9L for and how much you could'a got the 2.3L for (you'll be sick)!

Later dude,

Phill

I ultimately chose the SVT in Race Red - predominately because i really liked the white interior contrast stripe. But like choosing everything about this car, I'm still racked with conflict.

After finally seeing an example in White, I was astounded by how bright the Colorado Red happens to be. Most of the literature, and particularly the online Build and Price renderer, depict Colorado Red to be a much deeper and darker shade that I just didn't like. I placed my order yesterday, but am seriously considering thinking about swapping-out the color choice to the SVT in Performance White with Red Stripe.

I suppose this would all be much easier if I didn't want to be so faithful to the sticker. About as far as I'm willing to go is to de-stripe and re-stripe the vehicle according to its original specifications as I would have preferred a non-striped White vehicle to begin with. In the meantime, given that the Colorado Red stripe and seat trim seem to be reasonably bright, it's a not-too-bad compromise.

Yep, kept the 2.3 to put on the '11 and put the original back on the '10. And yes, got the PP and Nav. So being black and stripe delete, am really interested in your $500 stripe deal down there!! I would love to have you drive the car. Its smokin hot!! Never enough power though, like you told me before!!! LOL!! -HAWKBARR
