Hit the Track Tongiht

Well, hit the track tonight in my 2011 GT500 at New England Dragway. Temps were in the low 90s with fairly high humidity. First time to the track in about 3 1/2 years. Best run was my first as the track went away and wheel spin was an issue. Run details are below...

R/T .265

60' 2.045

330' 5.385

1/8 8.091

mph 92.16

1000 10.388

1/4 12.321

mph 117.24

Clearly this car is capable of an 11 second run stock in better weather. BTW, this is a base car, no Perf Pack. I had 1/2 tank of gas and ran 25psi in the tires. Unfortunately the scale was not open.

Nice , i would say they are excellent numbers and speed for a stock car . Are the 2011 tires that much better than the 2010's ?

Great Times! What traction control setting did you use? I cant seem to get any traction going WOT in first in my 2011. Is there a trick in launching the car in first that will let you maintain traction and not hurt your ET? Sorry for so many questions. I want to get my car to the track as well and want to make sure I am not running 13's/14's.

First gear is pretty tricky for sure but IMO Advancetrac OFF is best. The car is so heavy , it is hard to get it moving. I managed a 2.00 60ft and a 12.59 in terrible weather(87 and VERY humid)

It is my wife's car and she runs 13.1's in sport mode.

I took mine to the track last night and I had a really hard time with the 1 - 2 shift. I couldn't get traction no matter what mode I used. The only thing I didn't try is making a pass with TC on. I couldn't cut anything better than a 2.2 60'.

The track is at 6800 ft which I know has killed the times on my other car. I just need to learn how to drive this one I guess.

What mode has everyone had the most success with?

I live in Co. Springs, CO and we are right at 6800' ASL too, depending on where in the city you are (the Will Rogers shrine is above 7800' ASL).

I took the car to Vegas for a little R&R and broke away from the gaming tables for a little cruise up/down the strip.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE! It felt like the car had twice as much power as it does up here in the thin air. I'm not sure that the alt. is in Vegas but I can't wait to get her down to Sea Level!

Even with Traction Control "full on" I had to be careful with it. I had a bunch of fun with it, passing cars that decided to stop for no Godly reason on the strip.

I did have that *one* little issue with a Utah HP just East of Green River UT. I had my Magellen AND my OE Nav system running. I saw his tail lights just after a bridge in the center medium and instinctivly hit my brakes and at the same time looked at the Megellen. My vehicle speed was in the Red (meaning I was over the posted limit) showing 73 mph but the posted limit showed 70mph so I wasn't worried that he'd get me for 3 over. I was the last car in a group and I watched my rearview as I continued. I saw his red & blues come on and thought he was just signaling me to slow down. I kept my speed even and then saw him pull out. I knew he was coming for me so I just signaled (I was in the #1/fast lane) and started moving over to the #2 lane. He moved over to the #2 so I just started slowing down and looking for a spot to pull off the road.

He said he wouldn't have pulled me over but he noticed that I "sped up to 85 after I saw him", which makes absolutely NO SENSE in the world. I showed him my Magellen and that is showed actual vehicle speed AND posted speed, as did my OEM Nav system. He said that he knew *his* equipment was "hjghly calibrated" and I reminded him that mine was GPS based and not wheel speed based.

He said he wasn't going to write me a cite but he would write me a written warning and I was fine with that. I told him that there was NO DOUBT that I was over the *posted* limit (73 in a 70) but that I'd have to argue with his acusation that I "sped up" to 85 as even HE said it didn't make any sense (I should have pulled up the Magellen's "max speed since reset" but no telling when I last reset it and it could have easily said 100+ MPH since I know I opened it up a time or two during the trip.

Anyway, no ticket, just a warning. My wife said she bet he thought he had a couple of young punks in a hotrod and when he saw a couple of old coots, he laid off! Hey, *I'm* cool with that! I don't care what the reason, just that I got a freebie.

85 in a 70 wouldn't a been cheap...

I guess in some ways it really DOES pay-off getting old,

Phill Pollard - it probably didn't hurt that it was my 55th birthday (July 26th) too!)

Phill,

I think Carroll would consider you two spring chickens... certainly not "a couple of old coots". happy%20feet.gif

It's (age) all reletive....the cop that pulled me over was about half my age. To him, 55 probably seemed OLLLLLLLLLD! <lol>

I know when I was 30, 55 was WAY over the hill...and sliding down the other side! <grin>

So yeah, to CS 55 proably seems like a spring chicken!

If only I was 30 again....and knew what I know today!

How's that old saying go? "If I knew I was gonna live this long I would'a took much better care of myself!"

Ain't that the truth,

Phill

What was your best time? The 1-2 shift is going to be difficult to learn. I cant seem to get traction either. If you go part throttle its fine but as soon as you go WOT forget it. No traction.

I am almost ashamed to say but my best time was a 13.7 @ 109. I tried to drive it like my 04' where I could launch at 3500, cut a 1.7 60' and hit 12.6's @ 112. The Shelby has well over 100 hp more. Guess some seat time is in order, I need to get that 1-2 down.

Are you guys dropping your tire pressure to a more traction friendly 25psi. After 3 really bad passed I found that the factory had them running 40psi hot. After lowering the psi Thraction was alot better and no longer spun after first gear. 25psi a nice 3 sec 2nd gear burnout and a 2k launch got me 1.9x on the stock 20's. PSI and heat is key to launching a 4k lb 550hp car on 20's

BigDan, you mentioned dropping the tire pressure to 25 PSI, did you see any warning lights on the dash or anything? I'm just curious if the GT500 has a lower air threshold that will trip the Tire Pressure Sensor and perhaps cut timing/power in an effort to "save" the driver from going out of control. AKA a nanny. Have a few friends with C6 Corvettes and when they drop the pressure below maybe 25-23 it will actually cut timing.

I lowered my tires to 27 psi. Maybe I didn't warm them up enough, I just did a quick spin of the tires to knock the rocks off.

Oh...and I never got a warning light on the dash for tire pressure. I wonder what it has to get down to before the sensors will trip a warning.

No warning lights but when I went to air my tires back up they were at 27 psi. I didn't want to waste my expensive 20's but they hook up real well after a nice 3 second 2nd gear burnout bouncing off the rev limiter with the traction control and advance track both switch to OFF. They could only handle 2000-2200 rpm launch because I launched at 3k on my last pass and spun really bad. The new 2011 heat exchanger sure cured the 2010 heat soak problems as I was trapping 118mph all night even hot lapping it with no cool down.

I have done decent (with stock tires) with a 2700-2900ish launch (feather the clutch some) and a quick shift right at 5800-5900 in 1st. My tire pressure sensors q the warning on the dash around 25psi. I wish I knew how to turn that warning off, along with the shift light. I'm now using BFgood KDW2s and their worlds better than the stockers on mine and heat up & stick like glue. Now I'm at around 3k launch (still with a slight feather) and a full wot shift in 2nd and only chirp in 2nd.
