Painted Stripes!

Recommended Posts

All,

I think I posted a while back that I am painting the stripes on my GT-H, number 242. I will post photos from my garage but for now I want to share the link from the paint shop that did the work. You can see the entire progression from body work to finished. My plan was to 1) paint and clear the upper and lower stripes and 2) get the hood and front fascia re-painted because, frankly, the Shelby paint job sucked on the hood and the paint was chipping off the center section of the front spoiler and 3) get a -FEW- dings pulled out from the rental days.

Check out the pictures...As usual with my projects things got a little out of hand.

Key learnings...

The recommendation on "Myriad Bold Italic 163pt" is simply not adequate for the SGT-H. If you look closely and do measurements the lettering has custom spacing. We painstakingly recreated the Shelby letters, let me know if you need help with your car. The work is done.

Stripes look TOTALLY diffferent when clear-coated. You don't realize it, but the flat vinyl absorbs a lot of light and makes the color change. My new stripes are very closely color matched, but when buried under 3 coats of clear there is so much reflection (especially from the sky on a sunny day) the stripe color looks different.

There is no such thing as a perfect paint match for the gold stripes. The color quoted here on this site (Dupont 4------ something) looked to me overly green in some light and great in others. The color I went with was slightly less green, again perfect in some light, but a little washed out in high angle reflection.

Lesson here...What you like is the most important. I like how it looks. Let me know your thoughts.

From what I can tell. car looks great. Still trying to figure out if I will redue the vinyl or paint the stripes. It would be cool if your car and Jeff's could be side by side along with another with vinyl.

Great job

Not sure where the Myriad Bold Italic 163 pt came from? The proper letters are Myriad Bold Italic 96 pt. This is what we used and the stencil matched up exactly to the factory letters. We made sure of that before we removed the factory letters. You are correct on the spacing however, we did have to move the letters a bit to properly match the factory.

P.S. The car looks great!!!

I appreciate the comments all. The gold color I went with is slightly less "green" and flops toward a silvery color under high reflective angles. To me it's a little brighter but brings out the silver details.

The Myriad bold italic font is correct, but size and spacing were all custom. For anyone interested I have a sign shop that has all the specs and can recreate what we did (or make some really cool adhesive backed banners that say Shelby GT or Shelby GT-H) if you want.

I'm still putting the car back together, just realized this weekend when replacing the hood pins with a new set that SAI, umm, "custom bent" the original hood pin brackets with something akin to a sledge hammer. Consequently, new 'straight' ones don't fit. I'm fabbing a pair from 304 stainless and polishing up. I'm also designing and fabbing a skid plate for the front spoiler for those low driveway approaches. Will post pics!

Your GT-H looks great. The 96pt was too small here as well. My sign shop ended up making the stripes with custom size and spacing to exactly match the original factory stripes. Another issue I had was reattaching the letters on the trunk. Shelby used a speed nut instead of the fastners that came with the letters. If you need the speed nuts, let me know. I found a place on-line that sells the exact same fastner. Good idea on the skid plate for the front fascia. If you want to make a couple extra, I'll buy them. I keep waiting for a vendor to produce them and noone has.

I am interested in your skid plate idea. Keep us updated. We might be able to get the order high enough that everybody wins.

I see you joined me on the tail. I think it looks even better on the hard top! I have no regrets and I love that I can have it swapped back in a day if I need to.

The big questions are whether the shop wants to paint another one of these or not and how much did it end up costing in the end.

I went through a few rough spots with my hood as well. In the end, I was happy with the shop in Tulsa and I would recommend them to anyone wanting to put the OEM vinyl on. They weren't sure if they would want to do another Hertz or not during my restripe but that could have been my badgering. In the end, we both learned a lot and everyone is happy.

So, the big question. Total job cost me $4K out the door. Stripes top and side, total strip and repaint of the hood and front fascia, all bodywork and repaint of black, entire car cleared 3 coats, buffed and polished, includes workmanship warranty and stencil work with the sign shop. This is the second car I have had Gary do and the work is top notch. I took off the old stripes and the emblems, shop did the rest of the disassembly and reassembly. You can see how much bodywork was done.

The quote for stripes alone, cleared and feathered to existing paint job was $2400.

Make no mistake, I am a royal pain in the a$$ when I get my car painted, I'm sure the shop would have loved to charge me more if they could! I did buy them dinner one night when they stayed late to get the spray job done, so I supposed the total was $4014.30 or thereabouts.

Not cheap, but I'm happy with the cost given that it was pretty much a total repaint.

hi there, im in the prosess of doing the same thing, did they paint the roof, trunk, spoller, rear fascis

Not sure ifyou are talking base or clear.

The hood and front fascia were completely stripped and re-base coated. Spoiler was purchased new and base coated then striped. Fenders, and body work was spotted in with base coat where work was done. The entire car was not re-base coated though. Entire car WAS clear coated 3x once the stripes were layed down.
