Nashional
Hello. I'm the proud owner of a 2011 GT500! I had planned to get the windows tinted and post some photos here, but rain and work so far have hindered that endeavor. However, I need some help diagnosing a noise that I have that's driving me crazy. I've had three GTs. An '05, '07 vert and a '10. None of them have had this (what I think is an) issue. Many times when I coast and I press the accelerator again, something seems to "catch" and I'll hear a thud like a big dictionary was on its side and fell over in the truck (but I don't think the sound is coming from the rear). Sometimes, I can feel the bump too. I've even had it happen when using the +/- on the cruise control to speed up. It's hard to replicate every time, but I seem to be able to do it easily in 6th and going 50 (it can happen at interstate speeds too). I noticed it on the way home from the dealer, but it wasn't as bad. But I think I discovered today that the more weight that is in the car, the less it will do it. I took a long trip today and had less than 50 miles in the tank and I could get it to do it almost every time. But, I filled up and then picked up a friend of mine who has more car knowledge than me, and with him the car and the full tank, it wouldn't do it like it was before. Anyone have any ideas what this may be, or is it just normal for this car?
Nashional
Oh, here's a pic while still at the dealership.
ram_g
Have you heard the noise ever when going over sharp bumps? I have a similar noise in my '11 SVTPP coupe (just like yours but Kona Blue, no stripe). I hear a "thud", sometimes 2-3 in a row, like a rattle, when I get on the accelerator. Occasionally same "thud" occurs over sharp bumps. Does not happen consistently / repeatably, so I haven't yet taken it in to get it looked at. It is definitely from the front, not the rear, in fact sounds like front driver side. I had the car up on ramps and checked out the underside, everything seemed nice and solid, no missing bolts or anything like that. At the moment my primary suspect is the exhaust system - in the '11s the size of the pipes is up to 2.75". They're pretty massive with VERY LITTLE room around them in some spots, e.g. near the catalytic converters. I can visualize the pipes moving around just a tad and hitting something. Please continue to post on this especially if you track it down - I'll do the same.
Nashional
I haven't experienced it when going over bumps (and I drive a few hundred feet down a, less than pristine, dirt road before getting to my driveway). Nothing else seems to be out of the ordinary. And I also think it is coming from the front.
bimmerguy2006
I have that on my 2010 - from what I have gathered, it is normal. Try rolling on the gas slower while in 6th - my take is that its just stress on the drive train because of the lack of power being delivered at such a high gear. strokerace
i had that untill i bought a one piece drive shaft!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS THE SLACK IN THE TWO PIECE MAKING THE NOISE.
F150 Duke
Yeah I have the same thud. It has nothing to do with bumps because I also get it in 6th gear coasting on the smooth highway at 70 MPH, I take my foot off the gas and then plop it back down and that plop creates the thud. If I lightly put it on and I mean very lightly, then push the accelerator, it doesn't make the thud.
jbart610
This sounds like either play in the driveline. My '03 had this pretty bad and my '11 also has it to some degree. Basically when you are coasting, the wheels are turning the driveshaft; when you give it gas, the motor is turning the driveshaft. If ther's any play in the system, you will hear a noise as the pinion moves from one face of the gear to the opposite face. On my '03, the noise went away after they rebuilt the rear, but Ford isn't going to do that just for this noise which is annoying, but harmless. Changing your driving habits slightly can also minimize the noise.
Nashional
Thanks for all of the informative responses. I just won't worry about it any more if it's normal. But, now I need to know what touch-up paint to get for the SVP package rims. I just scuffed mine up on a curve I've pulled up to hundreds of times before without incident. Any ideas what to use? BigDan
Go to a paint shop and get a bottle of color match touch up paint and go on youtube and look at the best way to apply touch up paint and have it blend.
