Positive Battery Terminal Corosion

Recommended Posts

Today I had the hood up installing my new grille emblem, and just happened to check....for no apparent reason....the battery terminals.

The positive terminal was corroded pretty bad again. It happened about a year ago, way worse, and it was so bad at that time, that alot of the metal on the clamp is now gone! Today, I got out my small pan full of good ole Arm & Hammer, and dipped it three times, refreshing the mixture of soda and water each time.

Now the terminal end is really 'skeletal' looking. There is just enough meat on it remaining to tighten it down, 'gingerly'!! I even installed those little terminal pads last time? This time I will use some terminal spray grease....I'm done screwin' with this!

Anyone else been dealing with this on their Stangs? btw...still the factory battery.

My GT500 is too new to have this issue, but the exact same thing happened to me on our 2007 Ford Expedition - recurring positive terminal corrosion regardless of pads, grease, etc. I was given the advice to change the battery and I did, to a sealed Optima battery. Sure enough, no more problems.

The corrosion is caused by acid fumes from the battery - if it is persistent and recurring it means that there is leakage occurring from around the battery post(s). Only sure fix is to replace the battery.

Related to battery but unrelated to corrosion issue. When replacing the battery do we need to worry about losing any computer info on these cars if the battery is removed for a day or so? Need to replace the battery as it seems not to hold a charge any more.

Thanks for in advance for info.

There might be something wrong with the battery itself leaking acid. Also excessive acidic fumes could be the result of over-charging the battery.

I have a 2007 with the original OEM battery and the terminals look brand new.

Any thought that the car sitting for three to five months at a time could result in this issue???? Curious.

I sold autoparts for years, and worked on cars for friends and neighbors all that time. Still do most of my own stuff, and still am wondering what-the-dealio?

I always used Diet Coke to get the corrison off the terminals, eats it right up! Kinda makes you think of what it's doing to your stomach.

Bad Battery. If deemed defective it may be covered under warranty if applicable...

... will have to re-set the time and reprogram the radio stations. That's about it...

Thanks. Need to do that now with the battery condition.

Well I just checked my battery terminals yesterday, while the hood was up and thinking about this thread and noticed corrosion forming on the negative terminal; the positive terminal looked fine. The corrosion wasn't too bad, but discolored the terminal, even after cleaning it off with baking soda solution. There are no noticeable leaks from the battery but I am going to replace the OEM battery anyways, probably with a Motorcraft Max.
