thewheelman
I rarely drive my car for business, but I had a call to make over in another county and the drive was about 1/3 each, twisty 2 lane, limited access 4 lane and open interstate, it was a beautiful morning, so I took the GT 500. Nice drive. Enjoyed myself going over, but coming back I hit the interstate, cranked the cruise up to about 79 and let her roll. Yellow truck up ahead, I paid no attention to until I passed him. “Rumble Bee” it said on the rear fender and I noticed a “hemi” badge on the front. I still didn’t pay much attention until about a mile later he comes blowing by me like he’s on the back stretch at Daytona. I’m just a mile from my exit so I let him go. At the bottom of the exit ramp, he’s waiting for traffic to clear and we turn onto the 4 lane. He roars off, but then slows down a mile or so later so I can pass him. Back and forth, back and forth we go until I’m finally down to about 45, which is where I wanted to be. I stuck my hand out the window and waved “OK” then counted down 3, 2, 1 and he tromped it. I dropped it to 2nd nailed it and hung on. Blew by him pretty quick, ran it up to about 110 and then backed off. He caught up and ran right up on my bumper and stayed there the rest of the 12-13 miles into town. We get to the bypass and he’s in the right turn lane and I’m going straight. The light is red and there’s an oversize load making the turn so we wait. He rolls his window down and yells at me. I roll the passenger window down and he says, “let’s do it again.” I said “you’re in the turn lane” and he grins real big and says, “not if I get there first.” So, the light turns green and he blasts away trying to beat me across the intersection. I just sat there and let him go. A quick blast on a nearly empty 4 lane is one thing but trying to squeeze 2 lanes into 1 across an intersection is stupid! And then there’s this teacher at my wife’s school that’s just all eat up with mopar. He’s got a 68 Satellite (?) and a 70 Super Bee….I think…. I’m not up on the big body Chryslers and he’s always bugging me about buying a new Challenger and running my Mustang with it. Last conversation I had with him he was, “chip-this and tune-that” and on and on so I finally said something to the effect of, “If you gotta do that much work to it just to keep up with my old stock Mustang, you might ought to start out with something hotter.” Pretty much ended that conversation. Mopar folks.....funny aren't they?

They are really nice cars, but they need lots more power, or lots less weight...
Secondo
A truck has to make some serious HP and TQ to beat a high HP car. That dude had no chance, V10 or not. I always shake my head when I see a Chrysler muscle truck... For years they built them but no musclecar until recently with the Challenger. A friend of mine recently owned both a GT500 and an SRT Challenger. He said the GT500 was much faster and more fun to drive. Another friend of mine has 10+ classic Mopar musclecars, all mint and low mileage. For some reason he won't buy a new one. When I tell him my GT500 runs 11's he just shakes his head. I tell him that he's missing out on the new cars, and how great they are. In any case, I myself would love to try out a new Challenger.

Such a truck would have had a 5.7L hemi (the smaller hemi; not the 425 hp 6.1L), and not a V10. The Ram SRT10 trucks with the 600 hp engine are certainly much quicker, but he still would have lost! Sean, drive your GT500 out to South Dakota sometime on a nice roadtrip... You are welcome to try out either of my Challengers (but I'm guessing you would be more impressed with the Kenne Bell supercharged one!)

Black09
Good Story, and great call on holding off on the second run. 2 into 1 is never cool... I wouldn't say Mopar guys are crazy though. There are actually probably more jackasses driving Mustangs (just by volume). There are craziess in every make. I've never been brand specific myself. I'm more concerned with power and performance then the emblem on the hood. But, I love my Shelby, it brings a smile to my face every time I hit the unlock button on the key fob. But, I considered a SRT8 Challenger before the Shelby - in the end it just didn't make the same power as a factory blower car does. I think it really comes down to marketing and target audience. The SRT8 Challies were marketed to an older crowd that was more interested in a boulevard cruiser then a drag strip warrior. The challies are even bassed on a shortened version of the Charger and 300C frame, so it was a porker from the get-go... Just don't get over confident with Dodge trucks though. I had a 2000 Dakota R/T when I was in high school that ran 11.80's all day and not half of the heat soak issues that we have. Heck, my little brother has his '99 R/T running 11.20's all motor ad 10.30's on the juice, so bad ones are out there...9 times out of 10 you'll more then embarrass the hemi trucks, but there are some quick ones out there... Cheers, Jason
