New 11 Owner With SS Questions....

Recommended Posts

I picked up my 2011 GT 500 yesterday and I am as happy as I could be! Ford has come a long way and this car has muscle.

I am planning a SS upgrade and I have already spoken with the Shelby Team, nice people, and I am trying to decide what I want. I would say need, but people don't buy what need, only what they want. My car is Race Red with White Stripes and the SVT PP.

Here is my list so far and please feel free to comment, positive or negative:

1. Signature stereo

2. White stripes

3. Wheels-Durabright

4. Front and Back break upgrade-red calipers

5. KB 3.6 LC Polished

6. Suspension S/E coil over

7. Cooling-everything and all aluminum

8. Seats-power-heated & cooled-I live in TX!

9. Short shifter billet

10. Interior- more leather and CF, leather shift boot, this could get silly

11. Window scoops

12. Labotomy!

Obviously, I have left out some of the standard appointments, but you get the general idea.

Let me know if I have missed anything.

Bottom line on the stripe, unless there has been a policy change since Amy Boylan's departure, the only stripe that comes on Super Snakes is a flat black, thin-wide-thin triple stripe down the middle of the car. And as an SS owner, I will be more than royally pissed off if there has been a policy change on the SS stripe and other designs or colors are offered on 2011 MY SVT packaged cars.

1. Signature stereo..... An excellent choice. I have personally heard this system and can tell you that it is really a fine sounding system.

2. White stripes.... Se la vie!.

3. Wheels-Durabright..... Standard, but keep your stockers on the shelf.

4. Front and Back break upgrade-red calipers..... YES, definately!

5. KB 3.6 LC Polished....... A ton of H.P. and a personal decision. I would call SVT and get their opinion about putting the KB on your car. Not because of the blower, but just to see if you should replace the stock clutch which is rated to 800 H.P.

6. Suspension S/E coil over....... I would not touch the factory suspension without doing a careful side by side comparison of what's going on vs what's coming off the car.

7. Cooling-everything and all aluminum..... Yes, yes!

8. Seats-power-heated & cooled-I live in TX!...... Home project. Good luck with the cooling side of that job.

9. Short shifter billet..... Sure, why not.

10. Interior- more leather and CF, leather shift boot, this could get silly...... Personal decision. You could spend the money on better things IMO.

11. Window scoops........ Personal taste decision.

12. Labotomy!......... Only when your wife or banker says that it's time for one. :hysterical:

2. White stripes.... Highly unlikely. They are offering matte white and black

3. Wheels-Durabright..... Standard, but keep your stockers on the shelf. Of course

4. Front and Back break upgrade-red calipers..... YES, definately! Thank you

5. KB 3.6 LC Polished....... A ton of H.P. and a personal decision. I would call SVT and get their opinion about putting the KB on your car. Not because of the blower, but just to see if you should replace the stock clutch which is rated to 800 H.P. I will probably go with the Wipple instead

6. Suspension S/E coil over....... I would not touch the factory suspension without doing a careful side by side comparison of what's going on vs what's coming off the car. Not sure, good point

7. Cooling-everything and all aluminum..... Yes, yes! Thanks again

Sorry I could not make the call the other day. True, solely you call :)

To clarify for our team members, here are the 2011 SS model year changes:

- Stripe color choices are now matte black and matte white

- Wheel finish choices are, std. Semi matte finish SVT performance pkg. Wheel color (power coat upcharge)or the durabrite finish as a no cost option.

- behind the door "C cutout" side scoops.

Thanks Rocky

E, white is an option on the 2011, per Roger. Guess we didn't get the memo as TS members

Was going to comment on the white stripe, but Ill leave it alone for right now!!!

MM

I think I've made *my* view pretty clear on the Matte Black stripe ONLY issue pertaining to the Super Snake program and I have said on a number of occasions that it is one of the *primary* reasons why I changed my mind on getting my 2010 Snaked. I looked high and low for a Kona Blue car with WHITE stripes on it...because *that* is what I like. Not a Kona Blue car with Silver stripes, not a Kona Blue car with BLACK stripes on it, but a Kona Blue car with WHITE stripes on it (which all goes back to my 1970 Trans-Am).

Quite frankly, I'd rather see a "gloss white" stripe (or whatever OEM calls it) offered but a matte white stripe is certainly better than NO white stripe at all, IMHO (ya can't please EVERYONE!). I think a matte white stripe is *definately* a step in the right direction for Shelby. And I gotta say, that White Super Snake with BLUE stripe/s that caused such a stir awhile back is ONE OF *the* best looking Super Snake I've ever laid eyes on (hint hint!). It just looks SOOOO much better than a White SS w/matte black stripe.

But that Grabber Blue SS with matte black stripe has to be the ULTIMATE Snake. It's number one IMO. Point is, black goes SO well on some cars where some other color goes SOO much better on other colors. Black on Grabber Blue? PERFECT, IMO. Blue on White? PERFECT, IMO. White on (dark) Kona Blue? Again, PERFECT.

But that's just one man''s opinion and you all know what they say about opinions (Opinions are like assholes...EVERYONE has one, and they all stink except your own).

But I digress...

As for the side scoops, during one of the many times I've visited Shelby/LV I asked a Customer Rep why the side scoops weren't available on the 2010 Super Snakes. I was told by the customer rep. that the Shelby design team thought they were UGLY because of the 'triangle' shape they have (VERY narrow at the bottom). Okay, fair enough, that's *their* opinion.

Well, I know since I put the side scoops on my 2010, and many others have put them on their 2010's that ALL I've heard is positive comments. I've not heard a single ONE person say "they're ugly" or they didn't like them. Nope, not a one...

i think Shelby may have been paying attention (finally)!!!

Listen to your customer base. Remember, it's *their* hard earned money you're asking for. Give them what THEY want, not what YOU want. They say "The customer is always right" but I've worked with the public all of my life and I can tell you, that's just not true! lol

At least that's *my* perspective on customer input (listen to 'em, filter out the chaff and pay attention to the GP).

A wise man once said, "You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time...but you will NEVER please *A:LL* of the people *ALL* of the time".

Thanks for listening Team Shelby,

Phill

Sorry Phil this is going to be the distinction between model year 2010 and 2011.

As for the side scoop on the 10, not ugly but at the time of release and final design there were no side scoops avalible that fit correctly or meet the fit quality. It was decided to release without rather than place an inferior product on the vehicle.

Who said we don't listen! ;)

Thank you

I assume if you want to make them functional, you can do the same thing regarding the heated/cooled seats: a small home project to do.

If you don't want to rip up the bodywork and not do that project, then I guess you can just leave it alone. Just making a suggestion

Hey Roger, are you and the guys at Shelby currently developing or have developed a dash guage pod for the 2011 SS? Or are you still going with the A pillar guages, or both?

5. KB 3.6 LC Polished

6. Suspension S/E coil over

7. Cooling-everything and all aluminum

8. Seats-power-heated & cooled-I live in TX!

9. Short shifter billet

10. Interior- more leather and CF, leather shift boot, this could get silly

11. Window scoops

12. Labotomy!

Let me know if I have missed anything.

Rocky

1st you have to decide what you are going to do with the car, HPDE/Road race, drag race, just street.

I will comment based on the 3 options.

1. stereo-yes for all. It's lighter and sounds much better than my 08' Mach 1000

2. white stripes-personal pref

3. wheels-personal pref(although the durabright is very nice-my personal pref)

4. brakes- yes for road race(for function) or street (for looks). No for drag race(not needed and calipers weigh more)

5. KB3.6L.C.-YES YES YES. All s/c's put ALOT of heat under the hood. This one does not(Big issue). Also you can make more hp on less boast=less heat. Heat is a killer in these cars. I am planning this upgruad as a retro fit.

6. suspension- I have the Eibach coil overs and like them alot. However, if you plan to road race, Griggs is the way to go, if you plan to drag race, there are better spring setups for better weight transfer off the line, for the street it is great. so bottom line, if you are going for serious track(turns or straight) don't pay the extra bucks. Save it for the upgrade you will ultimately do for your specific application.

7. cooling-YES YES YES HELL YES-see #5

8 and 10. seats and interior-personal pref

9. short shifter-yes for all appllications

11. window scoopes-personal pref-my pref is yes. I love the way they look, but they create a huge blind spot on the right side. If you get a chance, sit in one and see if you want to deal with it. It's a pain sometimes, but if I had to do it over I would.

12. labodomy-hmm?

One thing I absolutely do, is(if they will) have Shelby ship you rear wheels to Weldcraft to get widened and start with a set of 305-335 rears. You do not want to drive the cars with the 275 rears. It is borederline unsafe and you will just enjoy your car so much more. Several threads on this in this forum.

Get the mod done asap and enjoy it. You will love it. I love my car. I will have had it a year next month and I still smile everytime I drive it.

Also. Try to think everything you do through. You will see alot of people on this forum end up spending double $ on things buy not waiting and thinking things through before they buy/modify the 1st time.

Good luck

BJ

I would prefer going with the quarter window block-offs on the car. I've read a couple of stories regarding the adheasive part of the scoop being ripped off at high speeds. (IMO)

BTW: I have never seen a 2010 Snake that has the quarter window block-offs. I know that the quarter windows are either slightly bigger or smaller for 2010-2011, however the 2011 GT350 has block offs that fit perfectly. Can it be possible for someone to photoshop a pic of a 2010 snake and put window block-offs on it, so I can see what it looks like on a 2010-2011 Snake.

11. Window scoops

Rocky - Congrats on your '11 model.

6. Suspension S/E coil over - I like the S/E coil over suspension on my '08. The closest car(s) that I can compare to its ride is a 1995 or a 2000 Cobra R. It is probably closer to the 2000R in ride. It is firm, but it doesn't beat you up. It also depends on what Ford has done as part of the SVT PP. It may be nice "as-is". Is it now an option to keep the original suspension in the Super Snake conversion if it is the PP?

11. Window scoops - The scoops vs. plates....................My opinion, if you choose scoops, the car look best with upper and lower, if you choose plates, the car looks best without any scoops. It is not that I don't like the plates, but when I think of a 1967-1970 GT500, I think of side scoops. When I think of block-off plates, the GT350R comes to mind. <<That is just me.............

When I saw the first pictures of the 2010 Super Snake with upper scoops only, and nothing complimenting the look behind the doors, I thought plates would look best up top, but now lower scoops are apparently available.

FWIW - If you choose Matte White stripes and you show your car with its original Ford window sticker, the sticker will match what people are looking at, a Race Red w/White stripe car. <<<I know that sounds petty, but I shopped high and low for a Red/ Ebony striped GT500 with the exact options I wanted for just that reason, so my car would match the documentation that is in front of the person reading about my car.

Rocky, with apologies, I misspoke (misposted?) on my original post due to misinformation on my part, and I have since corrected a couple of my responses to your questions...

On point 1, I was talking about another sound system that SA was considering for the SS's, and NOT the Shelby Signature system. As I have edited/stated in my original post, I have heard the system that you are speaking of, and it is really a terrific sounding system that you will absolutely love.

On point 5 about the KB blower, I should have completed my remark about contacting SVT to also state that it's not about the KB blower itself, but more so about asking them if you should replace the stock clutch with an aftermarket unit that can handle the higher H.P. blower. That's something that the Shelby Motorsports shop can do while/after your car is been SS'd.

And to clarify, my remark about changing the suspension was not meant to cast a negitive light on the SS suspension components that SA offers, which are all superb components, I just meant that you should make sure that what's being taken off the car is no different than what's being put on the car as far as handling performance is concerned, that's all. Coil overs are terrific and will help the car handle like it's on rails, but if your not planning to track the car on a regular basis, they might be too harsh for street driving.

Congratulations on your car as well as your decision to have it Super Snaked, and don't forget to enter it into the registry as soon as you can.

Thank you Roger, for your clarification.

But just to be absolutely *clear*....the 2010 will *not* be available with anything but the matte black thin-THICK-thin stripe....right?

I figured it couldn't hurt to ask! lol

As for the side scoops, I'm only repeating what I was told by a SAI employee. And as you've probably noticed with prior 'inside information' I've posted (Amy's words, not yours/mine) I will *not* divuldge the person or persons name/s. I don't want to get anyone in trouble just for trying to be nice to me and "telling it like it is" (or is not, as this case may be).

I also want to publically thank *you*, Roger for always being civil and polite in both private and public communications. I posted some information one time that I had personally observed on my own (no one told me anything, I observed it on my own) but hadn't totally thought of the possible or potential ramificaitons. You were very polite in your explaination of why I should have thought it over better before posting it and I really really *REALLY* (Truely) appreaciate it.

Frankly, when Amy left Shelby I was hoping you would get her job. In my opinion, you are a "People person" and that is a huge bonus for you.

Okay, that's enough butt kissing from me for now,

Thanks again,

Well, after much debate with myself, I will not go the SS route. This GT is great from the factory and it only needs a few things to get close to perfection IMO. The suspension is very good and I personally love the tires.

Ford has done an outstanding job all around. Now that I have had the chance to put in some seat time, I have narrowed my choices for improvement and upgrades. I doubt that Ford would admit it, but I think that this is their version (SVTPP) of the SS. Please, SS owners do not flame me. You guys are in a class of your own.

1. SC-may just go for a pulley change and a tune, if anyone has any data for the 2011 tune, please let me know! I may opt for the bigger FR SC, not sure

2. Cooling-HE, The Tank and the like-max

3. Brakes-Extreme front, not sure about the back yet

4. Exhaust-Borla

5. Wheels-no change

6. Watts Link-definite

7. Interior-covered

8. Stereo-Media-Kenwood Excelon

The rest will be cosmetic. I just cannot bring myself to change this GT. Once again, all My Opinion!

No flame from me. Ford has done what needs to be done in the evolution of the GT500. The h.p. has gone up (a little), the weight has come down, and the car handles better than before. It will only get better (from the Ford assy. line), until the change to the next generation of Mustang.

Many thanks! My research tells me that the Saleen or the Chicane may be better, but I am open to suggestions.

The HP is easy is easy to fix and this car handles quite well, IMOP. It needs a little more power but I need the traction!

Rocky, there is no reason to go with the upgraded sound system. The ford system that comes with the gt500 is a very good system. for warrenty purposes as you just got a brand new car,i would leave that part of the car alone. Enjoy!!!

If my car had the electronics pkg, I would leave it alone. I am thinking of the Kenwood excelon with the nav and all the goodies.

I agree with that, the part about the h.p. is easy to fix, and I am sure that it handles quite well. Yes, traction, that is the issue, but like I have mentioned multiple times on this forum, I would much rather have a car that easily and completely overwelms the rear tires and needs more rubber, rather than have a car with rubber, but in need of power.
