Low pitched whine or groan during slow 90 degree turns

I have a 2010 GT500 and have noticed what I can only describe as a low pitched whine or groan when making 90 degree or over turns generally at parking lot speed or a little faster. It could even be described as a light grinding noise but nothing severe. I noticed a TSB on axle whine, but it didn't mention anything about when it occured in that TSB. Has anyone else had this issue? I have checked the lugs and everything is torqued properly on the wheels and am at a loss. Seems to happen whether in gear or with the clutch pedal pressed. Thanks in advance for any insght.

I know exactly where your coming from, back in the late 70's had a similar issue with a Trans - Am, changing the diff oil specific to the vehicle cured it. My 2010 Shelby made the same noise so I kind of new it was an LSD lubes issue. Thanks for this info, you confirmed what it was, I'll leave well alone and put up with it, the new Magnapacks has helped surpress the groans and turned them into pure pleasure.

In the thread mentioned above I posted what the dealer said after I took my 2010 there. There is no TSB for the GT500 on this and because of the composition of the discs in the differential they said not to add additional friction modifier. The noise is normal per Ford so I just left it alone and decided it was the price to pay for high performance. Someone also suggested that adding more (the 2010 500's apparently already have the friction modifier in it) could create problems. See what the note is from Ford in my thread.

Adding friction modifier did not work for me. However, the groaning noise from my differential (during tight turns) finally ceased after I installed a Ford Racing axle girdle cover and filled with Royal Purple Maxgear lube (without any friction modifier added). The noise was still present after just filling with RP lube prior to changing the cover. The only explanation I have is that the cover increased the capacity of the gear oil. Just sharing my observation.

Dealer/Ford are full of it. It isn't a "racing differential". XL-3 is called for in the service manual. Correctly filled, the rear is silent.

So Ford has a special note on this - you saying they went to the trouble to create a special note and are wrong. What info do you have to back that up? Just trying to understand if you are an engineer or have manufactured these or something.

SCPINTO: Had the same issue with my 2007 Gt500. They tried adding a little friction modifier and told me to drive it a few days. Didn't help. They then replaced the clutch pack under warranty and no noise since. That was about 15K ago. Have the dealer replace the clutch pack and all should be fine.

It wouldn't be the first time Ford engineers were wrong about something...

For the 2011 GT500 Ford replaced the differential cover with what looks to be a cast Aluminum cover with integral heat fins all over it. Perhaps the cover is an attempt to resolve this issue by keeping the temperature of the fluid in check.

Ford replaced my complete axle assembly twice because of this problem. They wouldn't let the service tech replace the clutch packs. They told him take the cover off and inspect it than call them back. When he told them what he saw they told him to replace the axle assembly, they wouldn't let him just replace the clutch packs, he asked. The replacement axle started to whine between 65 and 75 mph with just 200 miles on it. I took it back and the ordered a second replacement no questions asked, which has been fine for 12,000 miles. The car is a 2007 GT500 and now has 22,000 miles.
