Lifter Rattle???

Recommended Posts

I've started to hear something that sounds like lifter rattle when I downshift coming up to stop signs/lights....I only hear it when I have the windows up....With the windows down, I do not hear it...I've though it could also perhaps be the fingers on the clutch rattling some...I don't know, I can't pinpoint it when I'm outside the car and it is sitting still...Am I just hearing things? I'm surprised I can hear anything at all as bad as the tenitis is in my ears....

Humm....I'm thinking exhaust issue, hanger or interior baffle. I say this so quickly only because when my exhaust went it made the sound when I down shifted so feel free to disregard!

^Totally agree with Jeff. If it's only happening as you downshift, I'd definitely start poking around your exhaust system for a leak, broken hanger, etc.

Good luck Carl. Let us know what you find man.

Well, I know it isn't exhaust related since I'm running the SSS muffler delete...hangars are all fine....

Jason,

I notice if downshifting from 5th to 4th, 4th to 3rd, or 3rd to 2nd....Have you read something else on here that has mentioned this before? I've not seen anything related...

There have been several threads and some guys have had their shifter replaced under warranty. Go to the SGT mod/tech forum topic and search rattle. You will find everything you need. It appears to be with the exhaust hangers hitting the tranny cross member, but some have fixed by simply tightening the bolts on the shifter under the boot. I recall one test was to pull up on the shifter and if there is excessive play that there may be an issue.

This issue isn't at the mufflers. You need to check the hangers at the x-pipe, midpipes, etc.

Definately NOT a shifter rattle....My shifter has been perfect since day 1....

All of the hangars on all of the exhaust are fine...

What I hear definately sounds to be coming from the engine as it slows down as the engine slows down, but when I first down shift, I hear it, but as I said, only with the windows up....I can't hear it with the windows down....It definately sounds like a lifter rattle, perhaps I'm just hearing the roller rockers....I've never had them in a car before...are they noisier than regular old style lifters? I really don't think that it is in the pressure plate fingers that the throw out bearing rides on as pushing in on the clutch a little would make it stop and it doesn't....I'm really just hoping that it may be the roller rockers being noisier than I'm used to....because that is really where it sounds like it's coming from, but as I said, with the hood up and the motor running, I really don't hear anything either...

The 4.6L-3V doesn't have lifters per-se. They have valve lash adjusters (hydraulic) which function in a simlar manner. If one were to go bad, you would hear it always, from inside and outside the car. Your power would be affected and you would know something was wrong regardless of RPM. But, your description does fit another problem.

I'm going to suggest one of the cats (if you still have them) has burned out. The cat material is a ceramic that can melt or dry out and crumble into chunks that can pass out the exhaust when small enough. If it doesn't crumble, it can block the exhaust until it does crumble. Under power, the material would be held in place by the force of exhaust gasses. However, once off the throttle, the material could be bouncing around inside the cat shell.

I don't know of a scientific way of testing this, guess all you can try is banging on the cats and listen for a rattle. If you hear anything, chances are they are bad.

Only with the windows up you say? Is this anything like when my wife snores it's a terrible racket but some how she always stops snoring the second I wake up? It really pisses me off when she does that!

if it's not the shifter then I'm stumped. You have what, 20k miles on the clock? I would be surprised if it's the cats or the valves lash but Mac would know better then I.

Maybe I just need to pull the valve covers off and see if I can see anything in there....perhaps I'm using the wrong terminology....I guess I'm talking more about cam followers (old time rocker arms) and lash adjusters (old time lifters) and don't really know what I'm talking about any more....LOL I'm not experiencing any power loss that I can detect, the car seems to be running just fine....Like I said, with the tenitis (constant ringing from shooting without ear muffs) I have in my ears, I'm really surprised that I have even noticed this at all....maybe it is all "normal" and I'm just worrying about nothing...I hope....

Jason,

Yeah, I've got a little over 26,000 miles on her now...not that its a lot of miles either...I've done oil changes religiously at 5K intervals, and the oil always looks clean when I change it still...

Running Mobil 1 5W 20

And I know exactly how you feel about the wife snoring and stopping when you wake up....happens to me all the time too...LOL

Do they or can they make a rattling sound??? Never considered that, but I guess anything is possible...

Injectors can/do make noise, the larger, the louder. More often described as a "ticking" sound, it's much like the sound of a leaking exhaust manifold gasket.

That's not the sound you have described.

Run your SGT up on a muffler rack (both with the engine running, and off). Bang around a bit, I'm sure you will find something to report back on.

OK, well, I know MAC will remember these days....Remember what we used to do to our bicycles with a playing card and a clothes pin? Stick the card in the spokes and use the clothes pin on the bike frame to hold the card...That is the kind of sound that I hear when I downshift....I guess it could be called a tick more than a rattle....

Like I said, I guess I'm not going to worry about it too much as I haven't noticed any ill effects on the power of the car or anything like that....no metal in the oil either, so I guess I'll keep driving her until something breaks or it gets louder and reminds me....

Thanks for the info guys! and MAC, it is good to see you back on here again....

Carl
