Garage Floor Ideas

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for ideas on Garage floors.

I've been working on my garage makeover all winter and now its time for the floor. I'm considering a racedeck floor, it cost about $3.75 a square foot but I'm not sure if I like the hollow sound when you walk on it. The epoxy coatings are durable and cost about $4.00 a square foot installed but the colors I've seen are boring. I've also seen VCT tile used and it appears to hold up quite well. 12" x 12" VCT tile is used a lot in grocery & department stores and cost about $.75 a square foot and comes in a variety of colors.

Post Up your Ideas and Opinions. Those of you with finished garages what type of floors do you have and what would you recommend?

Epoxy...

reason 1, easy clean up

reason 2, nothing to get between the cracks

reason 3, with the colored flecks, looks great

reason 4, durable

I've got the tan base with multi-colored flecks, and it is not "boring" at all, tons of compliments, plus we have colored walls (not just white), and it really finishes off nice

Hey Alan,

I put 12" x 12" VCT tile in my garage. Easy to install and keep clean. Tons of colors to choose from.

I see rugs down thou. Do you have a problem with lifting when you turn the wheel or is it just for marks?

Cali do you run into any problems with the paint lifting from hot tires?

I have had epoxy and switched to Race-Deck. Did not like the cold floor and if you drop something and it chips it was a pain to repair. With the Race-Deck I can just pop another one in if it gets messed up. Also my wife did not like the epoxy even though it had anti skid sand on it she still had to watch it as it would be slippery when wet. They both clean up very eazy.

No problem with tiles moving or lifting, but put a nice coat of tire shine on your tires and see what a mess it leaves on your clean floor :banghead:. So I park the cars on throw rugs after detailing.

For what it's worth, I know a fellow that has numerious cars and motorcycles and stores them all in a multi-thousand SQ foot garage complex. He went with epoxy floors for quite a few years, but after spending thousands of dollars repairing and maintaining the floors due to cracking, lifting, and peeling over the long term, he finally changed over to Swisstrax brand garage flooring and so far it has been holding up quite well.

Here's a link to Swisstrax's website:

And if it means anything, Swisstrax is also licensed and endorsed by Carroll Shelby Merchandising too.

I have the race deck and love it. I actually found a deal on it at Costco. Had to buy the edge on the internet, but the stuff looks good and cleans up easy. Yeah it does have that hollow sound but everything else has been a huge positive.

I went ultra cheap and purchased some rubberized interlocking mat system that Costco had. I purchased enough to park the shelby on top of.

When I finally get my permanent "toy box", it'll have top shelf cabinets, flooring, and lifts installed. For now, those rubberized mats work well.

I have epoxy on the house garage. I will not be putting epoxy in the new garage I just built. Epoxy scratches very easy. We have 2 lab dogs and their nails leave very distinctive marks on the epoxy. Also very slippery when wet.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for all your feedback, I started this same thread on 2 other sites and after tallying all the pros and cons of the 3 sites I have eliminated the epoxy coating. So now its down to VCT glue down floor tile or Racedeck snap together type floor tile. I'm still undecided on the two, I like the Racedeck simplicity to install but I still have a problem with the hollow sound when you walk on it. The VCT glue down is a lot of extra floor prep but the cost is 25% of the Racedeck. Decisions..Decisions..:banghead:

Question about Race Deck type floors:

What happens if something is spilled on it? Doesn't the spill get under the tiles? How would you clean it up without taking up the floor area? And say you spilled something organic that could spoil or souer, wouldn't there be a smell? Just wondering?? :headscratch:

The race deck tiles snap togeather very tight and I have had my share of spills and they stay on top and wipe up very eazy. When I first got the floor I checked after a spill and there was not a drop on the concrete. I now even hose off the floor and mop it with no problems. As a note after cleaning I found that a 50/50 mix of water and Armor-All type product put lightly on with a spray bottle and then mopped off really makes the floor pop.

For those that had issues with the Epoxy they did not prep correctly or used cheap Paint, mine is amazing. I used the Rustoleum Professional, it gets beat to crap with the kids toys constantly and when I clean it up it looks like new. Epoxy is NOT slippery when wet, not sure where that came from.

No peeling, can not see scratches, I love it.

Racedeck is nice, but it does not protect your floor like Epoxy IMO. Anything that spills comes right up, with Racedeck if something hits the concrete absorbtion is going to happen.

Good luck with your choice, anything is better than bare concrete!!!!!!

I like the concrete. Those tile systems do not take jackstands or engine lifts rolling across them or plasma gun slag or are they good with it?

I wonder do they work well with heavy equipment?

Epoxy seems like a PITA to install unless you have a empty new garage. The tile I do not think would make it is my shop for long. I also like to spray the crap out of parts with PB blaster/brake cleaner etc...which goes on the floor and I then wipe up or use the absorbant cleaners...

You got it, I did my floor before I moved in, otherwise it would have been a pain in the ass. The concrete was a year or so old so it was cured enough, but I was the first owner and the floor was spotless. I still did the Acid wash, pressure wash, and etch to make sure it stuck well.

I am not sure about jacking on the Racedecks, good question, no issue obviously jacking on Epoxy.

LOL...the rugs under Marji's 40th is to catch the rust flakes developing and falling on to the floor because you're taking too long to get the RBST on her car.....

Just kidding Dan...
