Need help with KR Nav/Sound System?

Recommended Posts

Hi again everyone. I was interested in upgrading my nav/sound system in my KR.

I currently have the stock Shaker 500 with Nav System in my KR. I also have a 2010 F-150 Raptor and the new Sync system in the Raptor is just awesome. It also has Sirius Sat. Radio w/Travel Link which the KR doesn't have and I want it. The KR's nav system is waaaay inferior to the Raptor's Sync system.

So this is kind of a multi part question but is it possible first off to replace the KR's system with a Sync/Sirius system and then would that be compatible with the Shelby/Kicker sound system upgrade?

If you guys have any info or related links on this I'd appreciate the help, thanks.

I looked into this when I wanted to upgrade my '08 F-250 to sync and was told repeatedly that it couldn't be done. I am quite sure that with enough money, just about anything can be done. It just sounded like it was going to be costly and require heavy modification if it could be done. That's one of the big reasons that I traded for my 2011 f-250. I would love it if someone came up with a plug and play solution for our KR's.

I've been thinking about the same thing. Just got a new 2010 F-150 Screw with all the bells & whistles. I really love that new Nav system & Sync. I'll love to replace the unit in the KR with the new style.

Yeah...it didn't bother me until I got the Raptor with the Sync and now I just can't stand the Shaker 500 system. It's just awful. Especially the no bluetooth. Driving the manual with no phone integration really blows! I spoke to Crutchfield today about putting something together. I think I'm going to get the Shelby/Kicker upgrade and then go with a Kenwood head unit that has all the same stuff as the Sync system. I think it was a Kenwood Excelon 9960 but I'm not positive. It's the best I can do since Ford won't allow or sell the Sync as an upgrade. Total bull if you ask me but oh well. If you find anything better let me know.

If you decide to sell the NAV unit, give me a jingle.

Chances are I'll be keeping it, as I keep all the original parts when ever I change anything, just in case. But if I do decide to sell it you'll be the first to know! Thanks.

I got around the phone issue by getting a Jabra bluetooth speakerphone that clips on the visor. Works great, but still would rather have the Sync thing. Been thinking about checking Crutchfield also. Been dealing with those guys for many years.

I find this issue very annoying. Who designs a unit with a "Phone" button on the front and then makes that button not function? The sad thing is that the NAV head is made by Pioneer for Ford and they offer a fix to add Bluetooth to the unit (and have the phone button actually work) but Pioneer will not sell the part to the public since the NAV head is "OEM" for Ford. I've complainted to customer service at Ford and they are "very concerned" but plan to do nothing about this issue.

Here is my solution, upgrade to the Pioneer avic-z110bt. Has all the lastest technology. You can add either XM or Sirius Radio and HD radio. To make this work like it should, you will need to upgrade the steering wheel to the 2010 GT500 unit, which is a direct replacement for about $300 and has many more control buttons right on the spokes of the wheel. You will have to do some wiring to make everything work but there are kits for about $75 that make it easy.

Very annoying that either Ford or Shelby does not offer this obvious upgrade as a kit, that would be "customer service".

This is my only complaint with the KR design.

Unfortunately I just spent $400 replacing my steering wheel with the upgraded 2 color leather one that Shelby offers. Not looking to spend $300 to get the '10 wheel and another $400 to upgrade the leather again. I appreciate the info though and I will look into it. You may also want to look into the head unit I mentioned from Crutchfield. It looks real good and has all the Sync features plus. I would have already bought it but I want to make sure to research it fully first. It's a new product and as we all know sometimes that means trouble, so I will do my due diligence and hopefully it turns out to be as good as it sounds! I'll keep you posted.
