shelbyGT500
Im leaning to the borla or the ford racing ones. Are they both the same exact muffler with different name or what?? the ford ones have ford on them and the borla says borla??? Im only doing axle back so i want as much rumble as i can get without going flowmaster

moabman
The Borlas and the Fords are the same except for the badging on the rolled tip. I'm going with them and to hell with the drone. I'm getting so old I probably won't hear it anyway. There are 2 models of the Borla/Fords one louder than the other. Louder: FRPP part number M-5230-5GT (me likey but Ahnold no likey - they're not legal in CA.) Softer: Can't find a picture but they look like the stock mufflers but with a rolled tip Alot of people also like Bassanis

tktktk
I had Flowmasters installed on mine a week after I got the car liked them fine and they look good and sound good. However, if you call Flowmaster their engineers do not reccomend their axlebacks on the Shelby GT 500 because of the back pressure associated with the increased boost from the Supercharger. Their explanation was that they use baffles in the muffler to create the sound and with a Supercharged engine this can actually cause a slight reduction in horse power. After further research I had the Flowmasters removed and had the Borla PN 11750 installed which look and sound awesome! Borla uses an unresticted pipe from the catback which in their words you could roll a golfball through. The use acoustics in the muffler vs. baffles to get they desired sound. These are the same as the Ford Racing Exhaust and also the same Shelby Autos will be using on the 40th Anniversary Shelby GT 500 Package http://www.borla.com/applications/lookup.a...ressive/140135/ Hope this helps............. mcshelby
That is my conflict as well. The guy at Borla is telling me that they are not the same muffler Borla/ffrp? Anyone know any different? Also Mr. tktktk did you get the axle backs or the cat back system? I was a little confused in your reply.

tktktk
mcshelby.......... I went with the Borla catback system and couldn't be happier with them! Easy to install and the look and sound awesome!! I chose the PN 11750 which are the more aggressive style per the explanation by Borla on their Web page. http://www.borla.com/applications/lookup.a...ressive/140135/

moabman
Yes, technically they are different. The FRPP says " Ford Racing" on the rolled tip, The Borla says "Borla"

jcthorne
I installed the SLP loudmouth kit on mine. Was afraid they would be too loud but was recommended by a guy I know in Ford that I trust. Anyway, I could not be more pleased with the sound. My old 98 Cobra with full Bassani exhaust was louder than this. The exhaust note is terriffic and absolutely no drone. Price was great as well at under $300 delivered. The double wall Stainless Steel tips look fantastic too. Most folks take one look at these on line and figure they are too loud, just not true on the Shelby with its cats and x pipe. 1BADGT500
The Borlas and the Fords are the same except for the badging on the rolled tip. I'm going with them and to hell with the drone. I'm getting so old I probably won't hear it anyway. If you really want to hear your exhaust, you need to dump the OEM cats and the OEM X-pipe in favor of some off-road pipes and an off-road X-pipe. Only then will you be able to hear your beast growl, cry, scream and howl at the moon. Take the muzzle off that scary beast and let him ROAR! Eh? EH?? What's that you say there sonny?? moabman
OK how am I going to get the car inspected if I do that? If I remove the cats how will the PCM trim the A/F mixture? Won't I get all kinds of error codes?
1BADGT500
OK how am I going to get the car inspected if I do that? If I remove the cats how will the PCM trim the A/F mixture? Won't I get all kinds of error codes? I had the same concerns prior to purchasing these items.... thes items are a bolt-in installation and require no modifications. You simply return the car to stock for the inspection (takes about 15 minutes or so to change back to the bolt-in OEM cat/X pipe setup and download the previous tune).... I got a tune from Fred at Evolution for the off-road pipes and the x-pipe (rear 02 sensors are turned off with the tune but 02 sensors are still mounted in the pipes so that they will remain grounded and the 02 sensor harnesses are attached as normal). My car has never thrown a trouble code or a check engine light and my A/F ratio is fine. You can get a tune for the intake/pulley or any combination of mods and have them setup with or without the x-pipe/off road pipe mods so you can run your car however you want at anytime with just a simple and quick change of parts/tune. moabman
Thanks. After wasting an hour putting on the axle back mufflers in which I ended up removing all the hangers in addition to the mufflers, I'm not sure I'm up to putting the cats and H pipe back on once a year. What about the x pipes that install just aft of the cats? That and the shorty headers should help a little. Eventually, I'm putting the Whipple blower on. Just put 200 miles on today so I'm up to 420. Did a little back road highway driving. The 5230's set up a harmonic drone at 1850 in my car and with my gearing that occures at 60. Easy fix was to go faster :happy feet: Otherwise, they sounded great. Especially with the top down. My mileage is picking up and the power is also improving. FastFordNut
I agonized over which muffler to get. Ended up ordering and returning the FRRP/Borla's due to continued indecision. By chance, I was at a Ford dealership last week. They had a GT 500 on the dyno and I heard the sound I was looking for. I'm going with the Bassani Longtube headers, X and mufflers.
