2010 Shelby GT500 Coastal E Tech SYNC Lockpick Install Write-Up

Recommended Posts

It took a couple of months of waiting to get the new software from Coastal E Tech for the Lockpick to work with a manual transmission Mustang, but it finally came through and I was able to proceed with the install. I am very happy with the device and it works as advertised (so far as I know). This write-up is for the removal of the center console trim and factory navigation and install of the SYNC-LP1 Lockpick device and camera adapter harness only. I will have another one for the front and rear view cameras I will be using.

You can see the product here... Coastal E Tech SYNC-LP1 Lockpick for '10 and '11 Shelby GT500 owners

For those with 05-09 non-hard drive SYNC units, use this link... Coastal E Tech UFRD 360-1 LOCKPICK

You will also need to download the latest update from their download page here...Coastal E Tech USB Update Page

On to removal of the center console and dash trim...

You only need one tool to do everything and that is a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive adapter and a nut driver...

[EDIT]: Also, I highly recommend a towel to protect the center console trim piece. The lower hard drive unit will more than likely scratch it if you don't use a towel. You can remove the gear shift lever and move the console out of the way completely if you want to go that route as well...I just didn't bother.

I'd recommend placing the transmission gear shift lever in fourth gear before you begin and make sure the parking brake is set. Open up the rear lid from the center console to lift the center trim cover. Just grab it on the lip and lift straight up. It doesn't require much force and there are no screws to remove at this point...

Just continue to lift up working your way toward the front...

When you get the center piece fully removed, you will expose two 7mm screws holding the navigation faceplate trim in place. Remove the two exposed screws with the nut driver (see left and right of the two lower tabs with blue protective tape)...

syncinstall04.jpg

With the two screws removed, pry the faceplate away from the dash starting at the bottom and work your way up. It will come out completely, but will have two connectors you need to disconnect first...

syncinstall05.jpg

Here are the two connectors that need to be disconnected...

syncinstall06.jpg

Set the faceplate aside for now...

syncinstall07.jpg

With the faceplate removed, you have access to the mounting screws that hold the screen and lower hard drive in the dash...

syncinstall08.jpg

There are a total of (6) screws that need to be removed in order to take out the screen and lower hard drive...

syncinstall09.jpg

Once you remove all six screws, pull the screen away from the dash first and expose two connectors behind the screen...

Once you disconnect the two, set the screen off to the side (mine on the dash)...

You will now start to pull the lower hard drive out. When I did this the first time it barely budged from the installed position. It maybe came forward about 1-1/2 to 2". There is some play with the wiring...BUT BE CAREFUL!!! Pull it forward enough to get your hand behind the unit and start disconnecting the cables. All in all, there are (8) electrical connections that need to be removed...

Here is a shot of the eight connectors...

Here is a shot of the back of the unit...

Shown below is the actual SYNC-LP1 Lockpick wiring harness. This thing really is plug and play and you can't confuse any of the connectors for where they need to go...

syncinstall15.jpg

Here is just a quick pic of the wiring diagram that came with the harness and is straight forward …

syncinstall16.jpg

On the driver’s side inside the dash there is a little cubby hole that I managed to stuff the actual Lockpick device in to…

syncinstall17.jpg

There is a USB port on the Lockpick device used to update it. I have a million of those USB cables that come with cameras and decided to use a short one and left it permanently connected so as updates become available down the road, I have easy access to the unit instead of going through the process of removing the dash every time I need to update it. Here the cable is connected to the device and routed out the driver’s side access panel…

syncinstall18.jpg

I originally had it coming out the passenger side…

syncinstall19.jpg

Then I decided the driver’s side was a better choice and gave me more cable for connecting to my laptop…

Here I have the Lockpick device connected to the three factory connectors…

syncinstall21.jpg

This is the camera adapter that is optional. I already have it installed to the connector that goes behind the screen…

syncinstall22.jpg

I have connected all (8) electrical connections to the back of the unit and routed the wires so they don’t get pinched. If you lay it all flat underneath the unit, I found that worked the best. On the top center of the unit there is a rubber ball that needs to seat in the bracket in the dash. You can see that piece in the pic above showing the back on the hard drive…

syncinstall23.jpg

Reconnect the two connections to the back of the screen and install as well…

syncinstall24.jpg

Put the screen back in its place and reinstall the six screws…

syncinstall25.jpg

Grab the dash faceplate and reconnect the two connects to the back of it…

syncinstall26.jpg

Starting at the top, align the two tabs in their slots and reinstall the faceplate…

syncinstall27.jpg

Faceplate back in place…

syncinstall28.jpg

At the bottom, be sure to replace the two mounting screws…

syncinstall29.jpg

Take the center console trim and starting at the front, reinsert the tabs in to their places and snap it in and work back…

Here I have my laptop connected to the device and downloading the update and getting it ready…

syncinstall31.jpg

Progress bar showing the device is getting the software updated…

syncinstall32.jpg

Successfully allowing me to continue with the setup operation and no error message saying I need to place the vehicle in park…

syncinstall33.jpg

Well, I hope this helps others with their install. It is pretty simple and straight forward. I looked at the time stamp from my first picture to my last picture and I was able to accomplish this in 29 minutes…so not hard or time consuming at all.

Good luck…

Terrific! Even I might be able to do it! Still think you should get a commission! Thanks.

Yes, there are about 33 pictures to go with the install notes. I can see them from my laptop and iPhone.

It's interesting. I can get them on my iphone also, but not on my work computer. BTW, if you want to remove the shifter knob and bezel, Sears sells an awesome six dollar plastic/rubber strap wrench that doesn't mar the finish.

Same here, I can't view anything from online photo sharing accounts like Photo Bucket and Image Shack from my work computer.

Yep, I have that strap wrench. I just didn't care to remove the ball. Not hard just moving it off to the side.

Glad you could view the pics. iPhones are great!

Hey WydOpen, how do you plan on running your front camera to the lockpick? Where are you going to be running the wires? through the firewall? Details please :D

I'm not quite sure yet, it will be a front license plate frame type camera. I have to look under the hood and see the best place to route the wire. I'll definitely take the same amount of pics and let you know when I get around to it.
