Questions about detailing

Recommended Posts

Ok show season is here in PA and I have a couple of questions about detailing the splitter and mirrors. They are both in fine shape but I'm unsure as to how to buff/wax/polish them. I mean I understand hand washing only but if say a small scratch or blemish ( none yet thank God!) is on the splitter or mirror how would I buff/polish/wax them? I'd imagine they are a similar clearcoat finish as the paint is but am nervous about putting anything on the CF items until I get a general consensus from everyone here. Can they be waxed/polished or do they need to be left as is?

My second question is concerning the stripes: Can they be buffed/waxed/polished as the rest of the paint? I realize they are vinyl but how do you treat them??

Thanks!

Andy

You will find the answer to any question you have here: http://www.teamshelby.com/forums/index.php?/topic/24464-sgt-detailing/page__p__358447__fromsearch__1entry358447

This information applies to SGTs and GT500s.

Thanks, lots of great info on that thread. Unfortunately nothing on the care/detailing of the carbon fiber items on the KR.

How do you guys handle the CF items?

Also, For whatever reason the front splitter always seems so develop a white dry film after awhile even though the car is clean and out of the elements. A wipe down with a microfiber towel and some detailer restores it like new temporarily. What's with that? :headscratch:

Thats weird. I haven't noticed that (i.e. white film on the splitter). It could be dust that shows up more since the Splitter is dark. It could be film from humidity. Beyond that I'm at a loss.

I notice that on my Cobra, which is Raven black, it is hard to keep the film from humidity from the paint surface. Its a painn in the ass!

Maybe thats whats happening with the splitter on the KR? IT CAN DRIVE YOU

Your carbon fiber pieces should be clearcoated just like your paint.

Although I've not personally detailed a KR so I can't say for absolute that this is the case.

I have detailed cars with carbon fiber however and I basically treat the CF as I treat any other bumpers or plastics.

Meaning... plastics can't tolerate heat as much as say aluminum or steel so I don't use a rotary on any bumpers or plastic pieces.

I use only a PC for bumpers/plastics, and CF and I'm always extra careful on ALL of these parts because they can get damaged easier than the metal bits.

You should absolutely wax/seal your CF parts just as you would the rest of your painted surfaces (including your wheels... not the rubber but the metal).

I'm not certain what the white film would be. Post a picture and I might be able to more accurately assess the situation.

If you can wipe it down and it goes away then it's not UNDER the clear which is great.

If those parts are not waxed/sealed then it could very well be the clear eroding away. So if you haven't waxed/sealed the CF pieces that are turning white do that and that may get rid of it.

If they are waxed/sealed then it might be residue from the wax/sealant... again it's difficult to comment without seeing pics.

Also you can wax your stripes, no problem. But I never use any polish on stripes. They're just too delicate. So try and make sure when you wash your KR that you're using good washing technique to keep those tiny scratches off of the stripes... treat them extra carefully when washing and waxing.

Let me know if you have any more questions :)
