Hood Struts for the KR?

Recommended Posts

I was interested in purchasing a custom color matched extended radiator cover for my KR but the ones I'm finding don't have cut outs for the KR prop rod. This led me to look for some of the automatic hood strut kits that are available and I can't seem to find any made specifically for the KR. My main concern is obviously the hood itself. I don't want anything that would require any kind of drilling into the priceless hood.

Have any of you purchased a hood strut kit that doesn't require drilling and also doesn't apply too much pressure while shut that it will warp the carbon fiber hood? The warping issue was brought to my attention by a sales guy at bangastang.com. He told me a few of his KR radiator cover customers put different strut kits on and got doubly screwed. They had to drill into the hood AND then the hood started to warp at the strut pressure points.

Anyway here is a link to the radiator cover I was interested in, just in case any of you might also be interested in it.

I think it really looks nice. Unfortunately unless one of you can enlighten me with a KR specific hood strut kit I won't be able to purchase the radiator cover. As usual I appreciate your help, Thanks!!

You might check and see if Bangastang has the magnetic hold down avalible for the stock hood prop. It is not quite as clean but the billet looks pretty nice. I know he was looking into it. He gives Team Sheby members a discount.

The coupon code is teamshelbyspring which knock off $20.00 from all the GT500 Radiator Cover excluding the carbon fiber one. The price for the standard GT500 is $499 painted with stripes and shipped when using the coupon code.

CPJ (california pony car hood struts) http://www.calponycars.com/prodDetail.php?prodId=842

Give them a call they do have a kit / hood struts specifically for the KR.

The strut is much lighter. It is only a 50 pound strut.

I have it on a KR hood works great. Zero issues

Just be careful...everything I have read says that the struts could or eventually will stress the hood and cause it to show stress cracks. Maybe the solution that BlackShelby talks about is different.

That's a true statement.

The new ones CPJ has is specifically for the KR hood .(You have to call them and ask for the struts for the KR hood).

If you use the ones made for a standard GT500 hood(which uses a much heavier stronger strut) you can possibly cause stress cracks.(the heavier struts takes to much force to close the hood which can cause the stress cracks)

The CPJ strut kit also looks factory . Very neat well made piece.

If you have to have the radiator cover, use a dremmel and cut a whole where the hood rod is located and epoxy in the rod holder. Do not use any of the kits availabe on your CF hood........if it damages the hood, you will be out several thousand dollars (10-15k!).

Ask bangastang to make one for the KR to use with the factory prop rod.

Thanks for all the input guys. After reviewing the info you guys posted I plan on calling about the KR specific struts but I will say I remain unconvinced that they could guarantee no problems with the hood.

I will most likely chicken out and do what "Richard" suggests and ask bangastang to produce a KR cover for use with the prop rod or just not get it at all. Thanks again guys!

  • 4 years later...

I just finished installing the CPC (California Pony Cars) KR specific hood strut kit on both of my KRs. I really like the color matched brackets. The shock is a lighter pressure to compensate for the cf hood. They look very OEM. I especially like the extra bracing for the bracket on the bottom side of the hood. Install was a breeze, but I would recommend having another set of hands to help hold everything in place. Their video was very helpful.

According to SAI and Redline Tuning, the potential for problems arrise the more the hood is open, not closed. I was told that unless I plan to keep my hood open more than closed I shouldn't have a problem.

I may have to look into the CPC set if they actually have less pressure. That being said, my car sits in the garage for seven months out of the year so I'll take them off during the winter and put them back on in the summer.

The KR specific struts that CPC offers are rated at 50 lbs. They hold the hood fine, but I have noted that a stiff breeze will allow the hood to shut on its own. If I attend a show or cruise-in I won't leave the hood open unattended. With the hood being so light, I would do the same if I were still utilizing the hood prop.

I agree with leaving the hood closed. Every show I went to this summer I kept it closed just because the car looks better with it closed. I want to get rid of the rod because I just added a CF rad cover and I don't want that getting scratched up; I also like the shocks as well. I've had them on all of my Mustangs since 2004.

Although I have not had an issue with the hood closing due to wind, I worry more about someone taking my KR specific engine caps while I leave the car unattended. I do close it when I leave now. I will never forget when I was volunteering at the Detroit Auto show a few years back and witnessed someone taking the rad cap off a Supersnake. When We confronted the thief.. (Kid) he denied it. His father was there and he accused us of lying. According to Gary P. and Sam, this is a common threat at these shows. Sad really.
