MustangTom
Is anyone familiar with auto loan laws? The dealership (independent) I bought my GT-H from called to let me know that my license plates are in, but they undercharged me for the registration by almost $170 and want me to pay. It sounds completely illegal to me, but I can't find any proof online. I searched the WA state DOL website, and couldn't find anything specific. I did find a dealership complaint form, and was thinking of telling them that I'd pay, but will send in a complaint so I can get my money back if they're in the wrong. They might let me off if they think they'll be investigated and have to pay back other people that they did it to. If it was $20 or $30 I wouldn't have even thought twice about it, but nearly $200? I need that money for mods! Anybody have a similar experience, or know any laws that might apply?

kahmann
Before you do anything, you need to see the invoice from the DMV. Then you need to find out how/why they 'undercharged' you from the beginning. It sounds to me like you're going to need to pay them, since they have your plates. Perhaps a call to the local DMV would clear up any confusion. Good luck.

They're saying they undercharged you 170.00??? Something doesn't add up. You might put a call into the Wa state Attorney General. I guess after reading this it just reassures me that Detroit Auto Works has questionable business practices. Keep us posted on what happens. So verify the documentation, if it was thier mistake, they should meet you half way. Fair enough, if they won't the contract was signed, dated, and if not verified, really bad P.R. for the Dealer. You can also ask for some mod pieces or service for your inconveinience. I will tell you, Freedom Ford our local Ford dealer is great at taking care of the customer. If you ever need a new Shelby or Mustang I can give you thier number. Good Luck
09 Red GT500
Sounds a bit fishy to me. Like others have said, look at your documentation. You should have an itemized listing of everything you paid for when you bought the car and there should also be a receipt for the plates.

Keep us posted on what happens. Renewing a Tag is a LOT cheaper then getting NEW Tags. Florida Doubled the costs of both renewing a Tag and getting a New Tag. Florida only has single Tags, and some states still has double Tags (Front & Rear). It sounds like they charged for a Renew and ended up getting NEW Tags which is a lot more $$. MustangTom
I checked the paperwork, and the actual contract lists the title, registration, ect.. as around $25. There's another piece of paper that lists the same amount, but the column title is ESTIMATED title, registration, etc. It shows the same fee, but has the word ESTIMATED in upper case. Nowhere on the form does it have any information about the word ESTIMATED, like the ability to ask for or refund money if the estimate is wrong. It just makes it clear that the amount charged was an estimate. I think I'm going to call BECU Monday and ask them what they suggest. They actually own the car until I pay it off, so I'm guessing they wouldn't be too happy with the car not having plates on it.
sherpa
i bet the dealer was just thinking a $10 title transfer would do but didn't realize when dmv said it need a renewal. all and all if ur have paid any amount in the sales contract under 'licensing", you are good. its the dealers mistake for not charging you for the necessary fees. however, its probably an honest mistake and meeting half way with the dealership is fair. unless you really hate them for some reason and want to be nasty and drag this out to the end for over $170, then stick to ur guns and demand ur plates by calling the cops right on the spot if they don't release them. on a side of caution, people now these days take dramas like this to heart and to the streets. u might have won but who the hell knows the dealerships' punk teenage son is on the look out or something. this is just me, i would try to compromise, if all fails, i rather pay the $170 cause i dont want no body after me over an $35k investment. good luck, let me know how it turns out, maybe the dealer will understand their mistake and just waive it. i would go in cordial/professional and not like demanding :-)
JeffIsHereToo
+1 Perhaps the dealer, or the person that wrote it up, thought it was a transfer and/or your plates are due anyway and the DMV also did a renewal and a transfer. So they really don't know what the cost will be until the DMV tells them. But it really comes down to this...you're claiming the dealer is trying to "screw" you and I don't see that at all here. They're just doing their job and charging you what the state is charging them. Are you saying that if they had called the DMV and verified everything in advance you wouldn't have bought the car? So you're now trying to get out of paying that amount? In other words you're trying to "screw" them out of money you would have to pay regardless? I'm not understanding why this is such an issue? Pay what you owe and enjoy your car!

But if the dealer did make an homest mistake, and is a reasonable dealer he/they should make an effort to make some compromise for this error. Some cannot when budgeting just so happen to come up with an extra anyhting,if was based off a dealer contract. So I agree to disagree with all of what you are saying. If you noted, this dealer has apparently had issue before with other customers. So to him an issue to you or me maybe not.

Using this line of thinking had they put $200 and it came back $25 I suppose people would say then that a "contract is a contract" and think it fine for the dealer to keep the extra $175? I'm all for jumping on a dealer that's dishonest but I don't see that here...but we can agree to disagree! MustangTom
I guess when I got the unexpected news I jumped to the conclusion that they're trying to rip me off. You guys have calmed me down, so I'll go there tomorrow and ask to see the DOL receipt for the actual charges. If everything looks correct, I'll pay the full amount. If something doesn't look right I'll go from there. I'm not looking to shirk paying something I owe, I just want to make sure I'm not being taken advantage of. I'm glad I didn't go there yesterday or today, as it has given me the chance to cool down. Thanks everyone!

MustangTom
I just finished installing my rear plate with 'HERTZ RENT-A-RACER frame! Sorry for the drama, the registration form does indeed show a total of $168.75 and I was asked to pay the difference between that and the $25.95 that was listed at the time of sale. Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that I don't get pulled over for no front plate. I've got it in the trunk, and if I'm ever pulled over I'll decide whether to attach it to the bumper or get one of the mounting systems out there. The car was re-striped before I got it, so the stripes go right over the old mounting holes. I don't want to poke through them unless I have to. Also, now that I finally have my registration I can send a copy in and get my Shelby/Hertz goodies! I already have the package from Steve at Hertz, but would like to replace the dash sticker with the Shelby plaque.
Fontech
I have purchased new cars in the states of CA and NV. In the state of CA, the dealership does 100% of the tranaction with DMV. This includes the title and regerstartion. The registration is 0.0064 times the purchase of the car. The plates are mailed to the new owner. In the state of NV, the dealership DOES NOT do any transaction with DMV. Which was GREAT, so I did not have to worry about the sales tax or registration in NV, only the sales tax and registration in CA. I do not know the law in WA. You need to see if the dealership does it as in the state of CA or if the new owner needs to register as in the state of NV. Tom

I guess that is the advantages of small towns. We have some great dealers here. Always trying to do thier best, with service and honest dealings. Never dealt with a large big city dealer. May be the reason I see a things a little differently then some. So Jeff are you guys thawing out yet up there? 70 degrees here today no wind, and super nice.
