How to fix your rattling shifter...

Recommended Posts

So your shifter rattles, its making you nuts and your not a turn the stereo up kinda person...

I turned my stereo up for about 7k miles or so I think...then the magic happened, the problem became obvious.

I could feel the upper chrome shifter rod wiggiling at the connection through both boots. Unsnap the pleather shifter boot like a lego and the inner rubber one just pulls up real easy.

So the top bolt was loose and the bottom was real loose. No biggie....

I used a 9/16 obstruction wrench and a 9/16 Gear wrench.

First I tightened both and then I took one at a time off and used Blue Loctite (Stumpy, use RTV on this part)

I put some muscle into torquing the bolts, they are grade 8 and cad plated.

I wiped up the rubber dust around the shifter ball....

Shifter Fixed....No more rattle.

Makes me wonder why there were whole shifters being replaced? headscratch.gif

This cured my rattle anyway...its back to shifting like a rifle bolt.

As a note a guy should use new nylock nuts every time...but I was too lazy to go fetch some grade 8 ones.

This took 30 minutes really taking my time and it was way way easy.

Hope this helps someone I should have done this a long time ago.happy%20feet.gif

Mine rattles/vibrates in 4th gear only. The bolts are tight and I can't figure out a reason it's only in 4th at between 3000-4500RPM...

I chalk it up as a eccentricity to my car alone.

Thats what mine atrted out doing...and then it got to be all the time under load...I tightened the heck out of mine and all rattles are gone.

Yeah Scotty I know...confused.gifhysterical.gif
