Ok, everyone. Some of you were able to join the webcast, so I thought I'd start a thread to compare notes and make sure I heard things correctly. It wasn't much of an introduction in that they really didn't show much of the car; unless you count the sporadic snapshots that were displayed on occassion. Regardless, here's some tidbits of info:

Engine:

- Will have "spray bore" cylinders similar, I would think, to the Nissan GT-R supercar. I have mixed feelings about this given that I've heard this doesn't have the same rigidity as iron lined bores. However, some may like the compromise in heat dissipation and efficiency over longevity. Further, I hear engine rebuilds are a huge deal when this technology is utilized

- The block is all aluminum (worst kept secret ever), 6 bolt mains (no difference here), and built for "...high RPM...".

- The official weight reduction is, wait for it, 102 lbs. Not quite what most of us were thinking.

- The improvement in the cylinder linings and better drag coefficients yields better gas mileage; a reported 15/23 - keeping it just under the radar for any gas guzzler tax of any kind. So, that expense can now go toward go fast goodies!

- 550 horsepower; up 10 and mostly attributed to a better exhaust system that reduces back pressure (32%); strange considering back pressure drops usually yield a corresponding drop in boost. Torque numbers remain the same from the 2010 block

- LARGER INTERCOOLER...YEAH!!!! 30% improvement in efficiency from the 2010 MY

- Larger oil drain backs; windage tray remains intact and carried over from 2010

Body/Handling

- 30% improvement in convertible's rigidity; they say it feels like the coupe now

- There is 20% less road noise (didn't say anything about the nice noise coming from the exhaust)

- New Goodyear tires for SVT package only? Didn't quite get whether or not these newly developed variants would make their way into all models.

SVT Package

- Front wheels are 4.8 lbs lighter; and rears are 2.8 lbs lighter (even though they are 20")

- Treadware on new goodyears is still 220

- Drag produced by this package is 2% higher than standard; but will produce a whopping 18% more downforce than standard model

- Cooling ducts are enhanced to keep break cooler (in the neihborhood of 7% cooler...I think I heard?)

- They wouldn't talk actual figures, but expect a 2/10 better quarter mile as well as an increase in 2 mph than the standard package. Again, we don't know what the standard is capable of doing yet so this was pretty vague. They were prodded for more, but they wouldn't give it up. They also mentioned a stepped improvement in 0-60 times; but here too pretty evasive when it came to the numbers...

GENERAL

- There will still be a 70/30 mix of coupes vs. convertibles; Expect 20 - 25% across the board to include the SVT Package

- The topic of IRS came up, and the only tired answer they provided was the usual "...we've optimized the live axle..." blah, blah, blah. Bottom line is, don't expect one ANYTIME SOON

- They did mention that the SVT Package will have larger stabilizer bars (front and rear) that are "...the largest the platform can accept...". Damper tuning, of course, is also different in this package.

That's what I have. Others chime in with anything I missed...and I'm sure there's plenty!!

Kind Regards,

Joseph (FordGeek)

Point: You CAN NOT BORE a "coated bore" (Nikisil or otherwise) Aluminium block. You must throw it away and get a new block if you score the bore. That will keep displacement increases to stroking only.

It might be the photo I saw but it sure does look like the rear spoiler has a whole lot more angle on it, to me. Did they say where the extra drag and downforce were produced?

I missed it. Thanks for the info.

All the info is on the Autoblog site that has the URL listed earlier in this thread.

Make sure to click on the official Ford release link too, lots more photo's there then what is on the Autoblog site.

Reading the article on Autoweek about the quiter interior and also about the revised exhaust:

For 2011, Shelby GT500 also benefits from NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) improvements. Overall road noise is reduced by 20 percent versus the 2010 Shelby. Actions undertaken to achieve this improvement include additional sound-deadening material on either side of the instrument panel, additional sound absorption behind interior trim panels, and a rear wheel arch liner to reduce noise on gravel or wet surfaces all resulting in the driver hearing more exhaust and engine sound and less road and air noise.

GT500 gets a new exhaust for 2011, roaring with an even more aggressive sound than the 2010 model. The 2.75-inch exhaust with all-new tuning helped to deliver the additional 10 horsepower.

I'm loving that Ford is responding to what GT500 owners have been asking!!!

Along with the "My key" option for 2011 it mentions the rear seats having fold down headrests, did the 2010 have them?

Phill is correct, No folding headrests. I have 2 2010s sitting here I can send pics if you want to see up close.

Hey, Robert!

Good to see you on here.

This is the guy that sold me my car, from Phil Long/Motor City in Co. Springs CO.

Hopefully, he can help out some other TS members too.

I too had trouble getting the live feed this afternoon. Kept stopping and freezing. Watched the re-run just now. I have a 2011 performance white with grabber blue stripes on order. Didn't opt for the SVT PP because of the wheel design, cost, and didn't want it to ride any more harshly than the stock 2010. From what I heard, sounds like the SVT PP will be stiffer and that equates to a more harsh and unforgiving ride. I am liking the narrower stripe of the PP model, but after checking my order form, I see my color combo is only available with the red stripe or stripe delete. Can't handle either of those two choices. I still think I'll pass on the SVT PP as it presented. Pretty expensive and if I want a 3:73, I'll just get the dealer to install it for a lot less then $3,500.00. The 2011 should be a great improvement with that weight off the nose. Can't wait!

Intercooler and heat exchanger are different things, they are referring to the intercooler. It is now twin brick instead of single.

i know that, that's why i was asking, didn't see the inter-cooler pictured anywhere.

to be honest, i cannot believe these improvements only net 10 hp. I feel an underrating is in order......

Agreed, 32% better exhaust, 30% larger intercooler, reduced piston friction with the plasma coating, better cooling in the block, better oil return and sump collection, Electric power assist steering, and only 10hp?

we wont know until someone dynos it.................the lack of a power steering belt/pump would save 10hp at revs.............

Wow - The 2011 Shelby GT500 is pretty darn sweet. Gotta love the changes for 2011.

Wish I had 50K layin around to blow. banghead.gif

I am with you Grabber. I absolutely love my '08, and plan to keep loving it for a long time, but damn, Ford is really kicking some serious money and talent into this car. I am super impressed, because I never would have though that Ford would have reinvigorated SVT so much. I was very skepical of the hiring of Mr. Mulally, but I now think he has to be the best executive any of the big three have ever hired, possibly top 5 of all time. This guy, and his team, is VERY impressive. I need to go buy some darn Ford stock.....definitly should have back a year or so ago, that is for sure!

Have to wonder about the significance of the SVT pkg and increase of SVT branding on the car. I wonder if we'll see the end of the GT500 nameplate in 2014/2015?

Any talks of a program for dealers to extend their 2010/2011 deal into 2012?

I seem to recall that while the Ford branding color is, of course, blue, the specific SVT branding color seems to be red. This then would make sense as to why the SVT logo on the dash cluster, the SVT logo on the rocker panels and, (from today's webcast) the SVT PP add-on parts [shocks/springs] are red and lastly, likely why the SVT stripe options are limited to red or white only.

The new intercooler won't add power, it will only let you have it longer and in hotter temperatures. The only HP improvements would be the loss of drap of the power steering pump ( supercharged engine will show the LEAST gain from something like this ) and the headers which are hardly any improvement. What else do you think is adding power?

I read that you could get black with black stripes with the SVT PP , not true?
