2010 or 2011 GT500

Having all these choices is hard.

Just when I was gonna pull the trigger on a 2010 GT500, the 2011 aluminum engine is coming out.

I could wait for it but might be like 6-7k usd more expensive.

Having said that, would you pay for:

1) 42k-44k USD for a pre owned 700 miles GT500 with all ops except no HID and shaker 500 only ?

2) 48k USD for a brand new 2010 GT500 with all ops ?

or 3) 55-56k USD for a brand new 2011 GT500 with all ops except glass roof ?

Thanks again. Your opinions are highly respected and valued.

I have a 2010 and would have gone for the glass roof if offered. That's the only reason I would have gone for the 2011. I'd have to see the performance data on the 2011 before making any decision. Wait a couple months for the car mags to do their reviews.

I think it kinda depends if you want the SVT performance package? Without that 2011 with electronic package is 51000 which would have been a loaded 2010 in terms of options. If you think about that is only about a thousand more that a 2010's msrp. So a year newer aluminum block electric steering worth the thousand bucks??? To me it is because if you want to sell it down the road the 2011's will hold their values more than the 2010's. The real question to me is what exactly is in the SVT performance package and what will the stripes and wheels look like???

Been thinking the same way. In our case, it is a convert we put our name on to order, and we are hesitating regarding the Perf. package.

Dont know enough but it may make it too stiff in a vert..............

Maybe people in the know about verts or have owned them would give some advice, regarding upgrades and how it affects the ride etc.

Doubt. All the GT500's from Ford will depreciate at the same rate.

I think in the future when someone is looking to buy a used GT 500 with the current body style they will look for 2011s just because of the aluminum block. It wont be as bad as the GT with the 4.6 vs 5.0 but i still think people will look over the 2010s.

You can get the class roof from Ford or CDC and install it in your 2010. Now you have two options!

I want to see the performance data as well. Let's see what difference the weight makes.

Now given the situation in the first post I would probably go for the the new 2010. If money is no object then my all means get the 2011.

My concerns exactly, the 2010 we drove with the 18s was very civilized and still handled well....The standard 19s will probably improve on that, but to add springs and 20 in rear may go too far for a tourer.

i dont know the iron block has been killer in terms of reliability, that does make a difference. We dont know how strong the Aluminum block will be....i'm hoping as strong as the FGT

agreed! i have a performance convertible (Camaro) and even with SFC's with the sport suspension, it is rough and shakes...

If the cars are the same price, yes.

However when you have a $4,000 spread between each model year, don't assume someone will buy a used 2011 with equal miles/condition over a 2010 with the 2010 being $4,000 less.

That is true, at least with the 2010 the engine is proven!

I don't think reliability will be a problem. Rest assured Ford stress tested that block six ways from Sunday. The weak point will still be the rods in these motors.

That being said, although the AL block is nice and saves weight, it would not be a deal breaker for me if I were deciding between a 2010 and 2011. By the time you option the '11 with the SVT package and other options, you're knocking on $60k. Too steep for a Mustang IMO. You can put the extra 10k into mods and have a beast of a 2010.

Isn't the Aluminium block already proven in the Ford GT's?

It's my understanding that aside from the change to wet sump and the machined starter flange, the block is the same one used in the Ford GT's and I see guys modding up the GT's a lot more than what I've seen from the GT500's.

Yes, I believe it is the same block as the GT. Ford must have alot in stock since they cancelled the GT.

I would get the 2011 with the SVT package. I think the upgrades of the aluminum block combined with the SVT package of larger wheels, better suspension, etc... all make whatever premium over a 2010 well worth the added cost.

Larger wheels are better? 20's are worse than 19's for performance.

+2

20's are heavier and slower off the line. Nice bling but not good for performance.

Over all the shedding of weight from the aluminum block and the addition of 3.73 gearing, I would think, will more than offset the penalty of 20' wheels, and thus a 2011 SVT package car should be quicker than a 2010.

I agree that from a performace standpoint, the 20's probably arn't an advantage. For that matter the 19's probably wern't better than the 18's prior. This was probably more done for appearance than anything, but I guess the bottom line for me, is it is the ultimate package for the GT500 (SVT Package), and thus I would want to get a 2011 with it, if I was buying a new GT500.
