Why did Ford/SVT Build the GT500 and Shelby American Built the GT350?

Let me first say that I am in no way looking to debate whether one car is more of a true "Shelby" than the other given how they are produced, I'm merely curious to know how it came to be that Ford/SVT makes the GT500 and SA makes GT350?

Thanks,

I remember some time ago that Amy spoke to who owns what etc., my recollection is that when Mr. Shelby and Ford parted ways they retained the Tiffany snake and GT500 marks. Mr. Shelby kept the GT350 and this week announced that SA has decided to build the car in-houe as they did in the 60's.

Good point.........No "Tiffany Snakes" installed on the Shelby GTs

or the new 2011 GT350 as they start out as Stock Mustang GTs

from Flat Rock Mich............

Ah yes, if this is the case, now I understand. This may also explain why the SuperSnake, and GT500 KR come out of SAI and not Ford (as Ford may not hold the rights to those monikers).

As well, it would explain the badging too.

Any idea about who owns the term "Cobra"? I see that used on both the GT500 (SVT Cobra) and the Cobra 289/ Cobra 427, etc..

Thanks for the info.

Maybe the 5 years are up and Shelby's agreement with Ford has not been renewed. Plus the KR killed alot of shelby's upgrade potential for GT500s. Ford used alot of those upgrades in the new gt500's. Plus with the anniversary of the 350 and Shelby needing a new "car" it only made sense to go with this one its a cool car but it has to grow more on me

Let me see if I have this right :headscratch:

Ford builds the GT500. Which is the this era's cobra ( a 07 - 11 Ford mustang cobra does not exist ).

Shelby took a mustang GT and made it better than Ford's GT500?

Right? or wrong?

If I wanted to buy (or upfit) from SAI, which would I get? I understand cars built for different segments that address different needs, but how is a prospective buyer supposed to distinguish the difference here?

Is SAI harmed by having SOOOO many Mustang options?

I think your list pretty much covers it. You have to ask your self what do I want to do with MY car? Once you decide what YOU want, Call Roger @ SAI 702-942-7325 He will be able to answer all your questions.

I think Ford owns the Cobra trademark, Carroll owns the GT350 and the GT500 trademark. When the Ford/Shelby contract expires, I would assume the GT500 would go back to the SVT Cobra just like the '94 thru '04 Cobras. Unless Ford buys the GT500 trademark. I think thats how it goes. LOL

Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!

The 07-09 GT500s still a better looking car with a bigger displacement Engine that

has been proven can easily be modified to insane HP levels without changing the

internal parts with durability................... :salute:

So you think a GT500 is better than a 2011 GT350 based on the engine size?

WRONG! The 2011 GT350 starts at approximately $33k from Ford + another $33k for SAI, + options for say $66k to $70k total (none of which really make it a track car - see Griggs threads) and the 5.0 powerplant is already near maxed out with SC somewhere between 510-550hp on a frame apparently the same weight as the GT500. On the other hand, the 2010 GT500 coupe can be had for under $50k and the 5.4 Niche starts conservatively at 540hp and has most of the KR upgrades correcting the 07-09 problems. You immediately have $20k to spend on track capabilities (think Griggs) or on strip performance (think Lethal). I'll take that car 7 days a week, before spending $68k on a GT350 and dumping another $10-15k into it to correct/enhance what doesn't appear to be in the base package. Just sayin!!!

I think Shelby's new GT350 is a modified 2011 FORD mustang that will out track a stock 07 GT500.

Yes it has a smaller power plant, and no the 5.0 can't handle the high hp the 5.4 is capable of sustaining.

Your comparison is "MOOT"!!!!!!!!!

Given SAI a chance to "UPFIT" both cars the only lagitimate comparison will be the

"SHELBY GT350" vs "SHELBY SUPER SNAKE"............

Or if you really want a STOCK comparison out of Flat Rock???????

Would be the "SHELBY GT500" vs "MUSTANG GT".....................................

When you look at it from that standpoint, I don't think the GT 350 will be very sucessfull. They have to make it cost less than the GT 500 or it will not sell. Especially now that you can get a barely used 500 around 33K.

I wouldn't say it's mute. The fastest track times in Shelby produced vehicles, is the Shelby GT/SR. Rumor has it the 350 beat the SR's track time. You guys gotta get over this HP thing. It's about a balanced car. The SS may win on an oval course, but any advantages it gains in the straight aways, will quickly be lost in the corners. I've personally watched the SR run and its like a gazelle. It's an amazing piece of machinery watching it.

Just my $.02.

In any case, the expensive and essential part of either package is the "Shelby" designation. Not a large percentage of purchasers are going to track their cars; those who do will do what it takes to make it worthwhile. Those who don't, won't be as much negatively affected by the slight performance obstacles as they will be positively affected by the "Shelby GT350" history, mystique, and caché.

Two wholly different worlds, either of which may not understand the other, but both of which contribute to a sales success. More power to both of them.

Not that it really matters to where this discussion is ultimately going, but there are some other Mustang offerings from Ford that come immediately to mind....

Ford Mustang Cobra R

Ford Mustang Bullitt

Ford Mustang California Special

I thinks there are a few more... but the above easily came to mind.

for clarification, Carroll owns all the names gt350, gt350R, gt500, KR, Cobra for vintage and datona coupe

Ford licenses Gt500 from Carroll and Carroll helped to design and work with the team on this car.

The others listed above are built by Shelby at his factory in LAs vegas, we dont use the tifany snake because Ford uses it on the GT500, so we don't want confusion in the market place.

for the rcord, the gt350 is selling extremely well
