Pockdog
Let me first say that I am in no way looking to debate whether one car is more of a true "Shelby" than the other given how they are produced, I'm merely curious to know how it came to be that Ford/SVT makes the GT500 and SA makes GT350? Thanks, -Pockdog
Matts
Ford and SVT felt that the Shelby/Ford connection should be brought back, so they decided to bring back Carroll and the GT 500.

JeffIsHereToo
I remember some time ago that Amy spoke to who owns what etc., my recollection is that when Mr. Shelby and Ford parted ways they retained the Tiffany snake and GT500 marks. Mr. Shelby kept the GT350 and this week announced that SA has decided to build the car in-houe as they did in the 60's.
slocum1946
saying the gt-350 is a post-title car states the obvious and does NOT answer as to why was it not made by Ford- which was the question...

This may also explain why the SuperSnake, and GT500 KR come out of SAI and not Ford (as Ford may not hold the rights to those monikers). As well, it would explain the badging too. Any idea about who owns the term "Cobra"? I see that used on both the GT500 (SVT Cobra) and the Cobra 289/ Cobra 427, etc.. 07-2937
Maybe the 5 years are up and Shelby's agreement with Ford has not been renewed. Plus the KR killed alot of shelby's upgrade potential for GT500s. Ford used alot of those upgrades in the new gt500's. Plus with the anniversary of the 350 and Shelby needing a new "car" it only made sense to go with this one its a cool car but it has to grow more on me

Which is the this era's cobra ( a 07 - 11 Ford mustang cobra does not exist ). Shelby took a mustang GT and made it better than Ford's GT500? Right? or wrong? WRONG! The 2011 GT350 starts at approximately $33k from Ford + another $33k for SAI, + options for say $66k to $70k total (none of which really make it a track car - see Griggs threads) and the 5.0 powerplant is already near maxed out with SC somewhere between 510-550hp on a frame apparently the same weight as the GT500. On the other hand, the 2010 GT500 coupe can be had for under $50k and the 5.4 Niche starts conservatively at 540hp and has most of the KR upgrades correcting the 07-09 problems. You immediately have $20k to spend on track capabilities (think Griggs) or on strip performance (think Lethal). I'll take that car 7 days a week, before spending $68k on a GT350 and dumping another $10-15k into it to correct/enhance what doesn't appear to be in the base package. Just sayin!!! I think Shelby's new GT350 is a modified 2011 FORD mustang that will out track a stock 07 GT500. Yes it has a smaller power plant, and no the 5.0 can't handle the high hp the 5.4 is capable of sustaining.

When you look at it from that standpoint, I don't think the GT 350 will be very sucessfull. They have to make it cost less than the GT 500 or it will not sell. Given SAI a chance to "UPFIT" both cars the only lagitimate comparison will be the "SHELBY GT350" vs "SHELBY SUPER SNAKE"............ I wouldn't say it's mute. The fastest track times in Shelby produced vehicles, is the Shelby GT/SR. Rumor has it the 350 beat the SR's track time. You guys gotta get over this HP thing. It's about a balanced car. The SS may win on an oval course, but any advantages it gains in the straight aways, will quickly be lost in the corners. I've personally watched the SR run and its like a gazelle. It's an amazing piece of machinery watching it. Just my $.02.

Frank S
In any case, the expensive and essential part of either package is the "Shelby" designation. Not a large percentage of purchasers are going to track their cars; those who do will do what it takes to make it worthwhile. Those who don't, won't be as much negatively affected by the slight performance obstacles as they will be positively affected by the "Shelby GT350" history, mystique, and caché. Two wholly different worlds, either of which may not understand the other, but both of which contribute to a sales success. More power to both of them. LOL for clarification, Carroll owns all the names gt350, gt350R, gt500, KR, Cobra for vintage and datona coupe Ford licenses Gt500 from Carroll and Carroll helped to design and work with the team on this car. The others listed above are built by Shelby at his factory in LAs vegas, we dont use the tifany snake because Ford uses it on the GT500, so we don't want confusion in the market place. for the rcord, the gt350 is selling extremely well Amy
