Hurst Shifter

SGT1416

Recommended Posts

Well my Hurst shifter went bad and is being replaced under warranty. My car only has 1400 miles on it! The problem I have is that the dealership is replacing it with a Ford Racing shifter. They are telling me that this is due to the fact of the well known problem with the Hurst rattle. I have asked to keep the original shifter because this is a Shelby but it does not look like I will be able to keep the shifter. Has anyone else had their shifter replaced with a Ford Racing shifter? Where you able to keep your original shifter?

Thanks,

Mike

According to the dealership SAI is the one dictating the replacement of the Hurst with a FRPP. They are also requiring the return of the old shifter. I have had my hood pins and grill replaced under warranty and SAI required the original parts back. I understood this because they replaced them with exactly the same product. Now my Shelby will never look original.

since SAI wants your old shifter back, ask them to replace it with the Shelby 5spd shifter :lurk:

Maybe you should just say screw it and keep the Hurst Shifter if it isn't affecting the performance of the car. I am not sure of what the problem is with the shifter because I havent had any issues with mine yet but I am with WILDAZCAT in the fact that we keep getting the crap end of the stick under warranty. :censored:

Mike,

Isn't the FORD Racing Shifter the exact same as the HURST one???

Designed by Ford Racing and Hurst

Fits 2005-2009 Mustang GT. For 2010 Mustang GT see M-7210-MGTA

Chrome stick with "Ford Racing" White Shift Knob

Teflon bearing with unique shifter rod and OE main stamping

Includes jam nut

Urethane body vibration isolators

Reduced throw

For replacment "Ford Racing" Black Shift Knob see M-7213-P

Shifter rebuild kit see M-7211-A

All you should have to do is replace the shifter knob with the OEM one (nothing on the side), instead of having one that says "Ford Racing"... And if the chrome stick on the FRPP one doesn't say "HURST", swap that out too...

Maybe you could go with the rebuild kit (M-7211-A) to see if that helps???

Good Luck!

Well, I tried taking my for the TSB because I keep missing third (not driver error btw) but decided against it and just wait to test drive someone else's stang with either the Shelby shifter or the MGW shifter, oh yeah, tell the dealer if they replace it you want all exact same parts.

Gregg,

I did look up the FRPP shifter but did not think to just swap over the Hurst chrome stick and white ball. Thanks for the idea. I will tell the dealership that is what I want done. Hopefully it works.

Mike

Good Luck!

And FYI - I liked my OEM "Hurst" Shifter so much, I bought the V-6 Version for the wife's 2006 Mustang... And a few years ago, it came with the Hurst logo on the stick and on the white ball... So I'm guessing that all that has changed for both the V-6 and GT versions is the blank sides on the stick and FORD RACING now on the shifter ball...

It seemed to happen overnight. The shifter was fine when I first got the car. It took a few months before it went bad. Then one day I noticed the rattle while accelerating. After that it just got worse and would rattle even at idle.

I'll keep my HURST shifter, haven't had any problems with it in almost 2 years and 22,000 miles now...HURST is as much a part of the car as anything else and I don't believe I would be happy with a Ford Racing Shifter...Some people gripe about it being notchy, and some gripe about it rattling, but I haven't noticed either one, so it's staying in the car...

Mike, if you haven't already you might want to review these threads. I had a BAD vibration issue until I had some things tightened and one of the exhaust hangers removed. If your shifter is just bad I guess that's one thing but if it just vibrates some of the info in these threads might be of some help.

That said, you also have to think that SAI is at the mercy of their suppliers and an ability to keep stock. Then you get into the fact that Ford is the company actually doing the warranty work and you can expect that through the years there will be changes such as this. As has been pointed out the FRPP shifter is a Hurst shifter and maybe you can keep the stick and ball, but even if you can't, you might want to look into getting the "S" shifter ball that matches the rest of the SGT trim items for sale.

I have 7k on the odo and the only issue I have had was the nuts and bolts that hold the stick to the base coming loose, I then raised the shift boot, tightened them up and everything was good to go..... Furthermore, when I do my next oil change and am under the car I want to check the other attaching points and tighten them up if needed.

The shifter sure is notchy but I kinda like it after getting used to it...

Good luck with everything.

I own 2008 SGT #574.

The only rattle problem I had was in the "A" Pillar. I looked on line and there was a recall on that issue. All they did was remove the interior "A" pillar panel and install a thick rubber "tape" at a meatl joint. The dealer did both pillars, although only the diver side was noisy, (especially when cold).

Hello Jeff,

Maybe you can answer one of my questions. My Sgt has about 2550 on it and it has had a rattle in it from the beginning. It sound like it is coming from the left rear quarter. I have had the oil changed twice. I have asked the Ford service tech to check out what is rattling. I told them about the info from this form suggesting that the rattle is from a muffer hanger. In 08 when they checked for the rattle they said it was comming from the rear valance. They put double sided tape on the plastic fasteners and it surely tightened up that part. As you have guessed the rattle was still there. I looked under the car and saw that the rear left muffler hanger is hitting the rear bracing behind the bumper. The hanger is about a quarter of an inch from the vehicle body. During my second oil change (09) I asked them to check out the muffler hanger. They said that it appears that the hanger is hitting & marking the body panel paint. (surprise) They said that they would remove the muffer and shorten up the hanger. However I would have to come back because of scheduling . From your experiences is this where the proble exists?

Thanks, Tom

Tom,

Not to butt-in here, but 2 years ago, I went thru ALL the same things you mentioned above... I even removed all the inner panels to see if there were any "extra" nuts and bolts lurking around at the bottom of the rear fender wells...

But the ONLY THING that finally fixed that darn rattle was to have the dealership (ie, Ford Racing Parts/SAI) replace the entire left muffler assembly... Turns out (via an old ShelbyAutos forum post from AmyB) there were some production "issues" on the early 2007 SGT-specific mufflers and that the mounting bracket itself had been welded to the muffler housing in the wrong place headscratch.gif

So there is absolutely NOTHING that the service dept can do to make it stop hitting the frame... Short of cutting off the old bracket and welding on a new one redcard.gif you will have to get it replaced...

All the Service Writer needs to do is call Ford Racing and ask for a replacement muffler... It is a well documented issue on the 2007 Shelby GT's... Lucky for me, my dealership went ahead and had BOTH replaced at the same time...

Good Luck!

Gregg

Yes.

There are a number of possible "sound issues" with the FRPP mufflers. There were issues with the hangers rubbing in some early cars in the area of the left rear exhaust hanger. Some of the hangers were too long and hit the sub frame. You said you checked the underside of the car and found paint is missing in the general area of the muffler hangers right? If that's the case you should find it towards the front of the car right after the exhaust pipe comes over the rear axle.

These are cool mufflers but a few have problems with welds on muffler hangers, especially the rear of the muffler that when the weld snaps off and is still attached to the rubber grommet thing and it will bounce around and bang against things as you drive. That's the obvious thing. Another is a sort of resonance vibration sound under acceleration and other times where there is a baffle plate loose inside the muffler. Often you just have them put the car up on a lift and using a rubber mallet bang around the exhaust parts, muffler, hangers, pipe, etc., to find where the problem lies and in the end, like with me, you may need to replace the muffler.
