Portable Navigation Needed

I have had good luck with Garmin, both with GPS units and their products built for athletes. Good service after the sale. I have no experience with the live traffic aspect. I notice the prices have come down a great deal since I bought my Nuvi 350.

Using a Garmin 760 Nuvi and have no complaints other than battery life. It has the traffic option and it seemed to work decent during the trial period, but since I live and commute in mostly rural areas, it did not make sense renew it.

You can get a Nuvi 265 for about $160 and looks to have more features than mine... and costs 1/3 of what I paid 1.5 years ago!

I'm looking for a portable navigation unit for my daily driver and would like your input on which one to purchase.

I prefer one with the largest screen available.

Are the ones with "live traffic" updates any good? From your experience are the traffic updates current?

Steve

I am not tecno savvy at all and will add this to what everyone else seems to be saying. The Gramin is a very good unit that is easier to use than any other product I have seen. My son loaned his to his father in law and they figured it out in just a few minutes without any help or instructions. Even though simple to use has many advanced features and seems more rugged than most also. Good battery life if you don't like to have the cord plugged in all the time. Mine dones not have traffic link so can't comment on how well that works. Keep in mind that there are two traffic systems available. One system you pay for and the other comes with the unit. Good luck. Ron B.

Well, I can't find my GPS right now :hysterical: but I think it is the Garmin Nuvi 765T - or something like that. It's got traffic on it but I don't think it is that useful on a road trip, If I was a delivery driver in the city it would might be useful.

Now I will say that it has a feature That I really like and if I ever bought another GPS, I would make sure it had it; It tells you what the speed limit is all the time. There were too many times in the past were I was driving down the road and all the sudden I'm wonder - what did that last speed limit sign? - and where is the next speed limit sign before I get in trouble? On my unit, I can display my current speed and the speed limit side by side. On a road trip, I barely ever look at my speedometer any more. And it is amazing that as soon as you pass a speed limit sign that changes the speed, the display changes instantly. It is the best feature I have ever seen on a GPS.

Mine also does bluetooth and a whole bunch of other stuff that I hardly ever use; But the speed sign feature I like to use even when I do know where I'm going.

Edit - now that I went back and read your post, if your primary interest is traffic information - then yes that feature works very good.

And another comment - an IPhone does just as good as any GPS I have ever used. And it does traffic, but it does not do speed signs.

I have two Garmins. A 200W that I bought a few years ago. And a 1490T that I got recently. The 1490 has a bigger screen than the 200W and has traffic alert. The traffic subscription is now free "for as long as it works". I have only been in areas where traffic alert is available a couple of times.

Traffic alert only works as well as the system that issues the alerts. I was stopped on I-205 in Portland for 20 minutes behind a wreck before the Garmin alerted me that there was a problem ahead.

When I tell someone about my Garmin Nuvi 855 the speed limit thing is one of the first I mention, as demonstration of the accuracy of information available; there was, however, one road out there in West Texas that it apparently didn't know about, so I just went along with the crowd and acted as if there were no limit.

Something I would change: when you know a better route than the one Garmy picked, even though she does react quickly and (usually) appropriately, when the lady says "Recalculating ... " I don't like the accusatory tone of her voice.

Thanks guys. I'll start looking at those models.

And yes, for me simple is better. Couldn't figure out that Hertz NeverLost unit earlier this month for the life of me. I was glad that it could be operated while the car was moving but I couldn't get the dang thing to forget it was no longer in Texas.

Well I went went the Garmin Nuvi 265WT. Couldn't beat the $150 price from Staples.

Haven't tried it out yet but hope to do so this weekend. Between the posts here and a little Googling it seems most folks like the Garmin units.

I'm glad you went with the Garmin Nuvi 265WT also.

I've owned a Garmin C320 for a couple years now. Very happy with it. A couple of drawbacks on my unit are the size (older unit is bulkier then the newer slim ones), lack of routing for a trip (i.e. with multiple locations).

Recently picked up Magellan 4250's as xmas gifts for my kids. Amazon has this one as a factory refurbish for $99! One had a defective screen. Warranty replaced with newer model Magellan 4700. The 4700 looks to have a ton of cool features (not that the 4250 doesn't, just that the 4700 is newer with even more features and a 4.7" screen) so the wife and I have decided to keep the 4700 and buy another 4250 for the replacement!

Another item to consider on these with the Shalby's/newer Mustangs is a lighter adapter (ebay has best pricing for these). Perfect location for GPS in my Shelby!

Well the Garmin works just fine. Still trying to figure out the live traffic updates though.

Updating the unit was quick. Less than a minute so I'm not sure if it updated the maps or just the operating software.

And yes those cigarette light mounting stalks look like they will work perfect in all my cars.

It took me quite a while to download all new maps. Then it did a very quick operating software update.

You only get a short time to get the FREE MAPS UPDATE. Make sure you get it.

Yes I thought I read somewhere you get one free map update. I'll have to look at the Garmin website again to see where the map updates are located.
