Is it worth paying the $$ to update the NAV DVD?

Hey everybody,

Just got an mailing about updating the DVD in my NAV system (2008, built on 1/22/08). Knowing these DVDs are 'SPENSIVE

I was wondering if anybody had put in the recent DVD update and any thoughts on if it is worth the $$

Hm this is on the back burner for me too. I haven't bought it and very well might not for a good long time. In all honestly, I don't depend on it that much, especially not enough to warrant the cash to update the DVD.

I have a TomTom in my daily driver that I've used since 2007 or there about and haven't updated it, and it does fine (with the exception of a few freeway interchanges that have been reconfigured, etc.). As long as you follow the signs and double check it, you should be okay.

After a couple of years I can't really imagine that an updated the DVD is going to help me out all that much. Just IMHO of course - if you really really rely on it and use it all the time then you bet, grab the new one.

Be carful ordering the discounted ones on Ebay. I did, recieved a COPY on dvd-r media. It did not work and bricked my nav unit half way through the update. Good news is the local dealer had pity on me when I told him my stupidity. Took one out of a new car and sold it to me for $99 (the current ford/navteq promotion) and ordered a replacement part for the car on the sales floor. Version 9P is the latest. Its a bit better at routing and a number of new roads, POIs and phone numbers updated etc. Nothing major though.

In case you care, Paypal got my $$ back from the poor ebay dealer.

I have to say, I've contemplated finding a boot leg and sticking it in there. Thanks for the info.

Really, $99? Was a LOT more then that when I looked it up on the web.

Do you have a web address for ordering it for $99 (real from Ford, not ebay)?

No, that's what Mac Haik Ford sold it to me for. I had recieved a advertisement in the US mail a few weeks ago from Navteq with the price of $99 valid at most FLM dealers. It may not be valid any longer but the 'regular' price was about $130 with any sort of good customer or car club discount at the parts counter.

Personally I would by a Tom Tom....the prices have come down a lot and I believe they have FREE map upgrades. Also its transferable to another car or walking with it if needed. To me these benefits significantly outweigh having a unit permanently fixed in the car. May be an option to consider.

I have a 6p. Sounds old. What is the current release?

Hey skip, I think the latest is 8P. Someone said 9P above but I couldn't find any reference to that. I did upgrade mine to a 7P from the 3 or 4P that came with the car. I think I will wait and see if they update it again for next year. Here is an example for sale on ebay.

Cool. Yup 8P looks like the latest.

I found the paperwork that came in the mail - http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/WFS/Navteq-NavteqNorthAmerica-Site/en_US/-/USD/ViewStandardCatalog-Browse;pgid=8pNe4X886nJSR0Al9y1FasJV00008zL3yrK4;sid=9_eMbdGhP5GObZqCINTIZduroFkG04YPfUk-YyPb?CatalogCategoryID=fh4KCghBshsAAAEa2iRSpuX5&ShowAllProducts=YES&PersistNavigationMenu=YES

The Ebay one is a good bit less, but not sure it's EXACTLY the same thing. Hummm

My NAV DVD was missing when I brought my new KR home, and when I complained, the dealer gave me a new 8P DVD. So far, it looks the same as the 7P loaded in my '08 Bullitt. I wouldn't bother upgrading with every new release.. Wait a couple of years. My 2¢.

Why would you have a Tom Tom hanging from your windshield if you already have a nav unit in the car? That makes absolutely no sense to me at all.

Old one was 6p new one is 9p. 3 years difference as they are roughly annual updates.

9p came out in October for the 2010 model year. The next release is not until late next year.

Where is the 9P available from? The flier I received from Ford to the NAVTEQ site just pulled up the 8P rev after navigating through the menues.

Perhaps it a new NAV system/manufacturer or something?

Ok, I guess you would have to order from the dealer or the order form.
