4.6 3V "state of confusion"

Recommended Posts

Love my '08 SGT #574 (5 speed).

Every once in a while, starting the car becomes an issue.

Seems like the engine is confused. Normally it fires right up, but during the state of confusion, it cranks over and will not fire. I can tell it is going to happen as soon as I hit the key.

Have to turn the key off and try again. Usually, I have to really stay on the key longer into the start-up crank mode, even as the motor stumbles and rumbles back to life. Runs just fine after the event.

After that, it will be fine for several weeks and then do it again.

I burn nothing but 93 octane Crystal Clear BP - Amoco Ultimate.

This ocurred before and after my engine mods.

I think I saw another thread about this issue last year on this site or possibly Mustangforum.

Anyone have information on this?

IF YOU HAVE ADDED ANY MODS AND ONE OF THEM WAS A

COLD AIR INTAKE YOU MIGHT NEED TO CHECK FOR A VACUM LEAK

OR A LOOSE HOSE CLAMP ON YOU INTAKE TUBE COMING FROM THE

OPEN ELEMENT AIR FILTER TO THE THROTTLE BODY. JUST A GUESS WITH-

OUT KNOWING ALL OF THE SYMTOMS OR FACTS. B.O.L

:shift: Definitely check the air inlet clamps, particularly at the underside of the throttle body. Last week I was cruising along on the interstate when my SGT starting surging and running rough. I exited and could hardly make it through the stop sign. Pulled into a fruit stand, lifted the hood, and my Steeda carbon fiber air inlet tube had totally slipped off and was about to fall into the fan. I knew the thing was loose but had forgotten to tighten so my stupidity, but this had happened before on the tube going into the filter, not much of a problem, but this time it came loose at the throttle body as well, and the old SGT said, enough already!!

My SGT (08SGT0235) does this every once in a while...no pattern to it, but like you, I can seem to tell when it is going to happen just as soon as I turn the key...once it fires, it sits there and stumbles for several seconds before finally "catching up" and then runs fine...

This is the "cold start function" on the ford racing and other tuners out there. When the temp. goes below sixty degrees and the car sits for twelve hours or longer this occurs. Next time it happens press the throttle half way and see if this helps it keep running. Both my ford tunes did this, from shelby and from FRPP with the supercharger. I had the tune fixed by Ford then I had my personel tuner fix it permanently. The problem is mainly with the upper half of the US in colder climates. Ask your dealer about it and bring it in. Make sure they leave it outside in the cold to produce the problem otherwise they wont duplicate it in a warm shop. It took my dealer two phone calls to put it outside to reproduce the condition back in 2007 when I bought the car. It isnt a vacuum leak because a leak will happen hot or cold. Its not the fuel pump or pump module either. Hopefully more TS members will chime in on this condition. Good luck.

Everytime this ocurrs, I have already had the car out cruizin and it is at normal operating temperature. It ocurrs when I stop somewhere and return to start the motor. Very spuratic, happens maybe once a month or so.

The cold air intake is the original Shelby Steeda CAI installed in Vegas.

As stated this happened when "stock" and also after my mods..

COMP Thumper CAMS

Steeda Delete plates

Steeda under-pullies

KOOKS LT Headers

KOOKS CATS

Corsa Axleback mufflers

Ford Racing 4:10's

BRENSPEED 93 octane tune

American Racing GT5 19" single block forged aluminum wheels

Thanks for everyone's thoughts on this.

Hm.. mines never done that.

It sits in the garage without being started for as long as a month at times.

You put an ad in the paper or on Craig's list, you can probably find someone willing to drive it more often for you at a reasonable rate ...

Has it been randomly stumbling and stuttering since new or did it start after putting on some miles? How many miles do you have now? Just a guess, but if you haven't yet, try changing the fuel filter.

Parson (Jack) Russell with a bad temper + less than flattering bunny ears + laughter and teasing from owner = Devil Bunny!

(Kinda what that rabbit from Monty Python would look like if it were coming at you!)

Makes a great logo for my impromptu race team!

My car did this, turned out to be a bad fuel pump.

I think it's the clutch switch. Make sure the clutch is literally floored when you crank the engine. That switch can be flaky if the clutch isn't all the way in completing the contact or you are 1mm off the floor and "lightswitching" it.

I HAVE EXPERIENCED THE NO START CONDITION WHEN NOT DEPRESSING THE

CLUTCH ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR BOARDS ;BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK AT ALL.THAT

BEING SAID , THE SYMTOMS IN THIS CASE ARE NOT THE SAME. IMO

Yeah, that's not it, mine won't even click without the clutch being all the way on the floor...maybe we'll figure it out some day...

Where I have never had this happen in my Shelby, my 03 mach and both Lightnings that I had did this. Never did figure out why it happened and could never get an answer from Ford either. When I first read this thread, I realized how long its been since I have had this happen. Watch, as soon as I get my car back, it will start doing it now. I knew I shouldnt have clicked on this topic. :censored:
