jpfreeman6272
I plan on getting the coupe and passing it down to my kid in 20-40 years. I don't like the vinyl stripes so I planned on ordering the car without the stripes and then having stripes painted on by a local autobody shop. A friend of mine thought this may decrease the value of the car (not having the stock vinyl stripes). Do you think this is true? Thanks

Unless you think it will be good enough to be an unrestored original car (very difficult to keep it that way). Repainting cars does not nec hurt the value except changing it from unrestored to restored. After 40 years and lots of fun driving it, the paint will likely need redone anyway. Just MHO. KingCobra
I thought of that myself and contacted the best shop here where I live, and was told that they had come a long way with improvements to vinyl appliques. He told me that they would last for years, and chips and cracking would be very unlikely. If I wanted painted, they would have to remove some body parts and clearcoat the entire car afterward, and would run about $4k. I will be sticking with the vinyl for sure. KingCobra. D.Boone
I am thinking the best plan may be to order the GT500 with no stripes. There may be additional stripe colors released next year (rumor only, no inside info) and this would allow you to have your GT500 with the color stripes YOU want added next year. You can mix and match what is available rather than having to settle for the combinations that Ford will let you order on the car. I am sure any Ford body shop could order and install the stripe kits. As far as paint, someone already commented that you should be able to have the stripes painted on with a quailty one-part paint and not have to worry about re-clearcoating the entire car. I would think that would come in alot less than $4000.
nisswadog
I, in fact, had side stripes exactly like the GT500s painted (without the "GT500") painted on my '05 GT convertible and total application (with clearcoating of the stripes) was only $800. I love the appearance and, if I end up trading up, would do the same for the GT500. :D

In order to Paint the Twin Shelby's, the Right Way, will require the removal of Front and Rear Bumper, Lower Front Fascia, Front and Rear Lower Skirting, Hood Grill Ducting, Rear Spoiler and Various other Trim Pieces. Next, Prep, Paint, Clearcoat and Reassembly Very Labour Intensive!
