Taking Chance: The story of a marine killed in action being escorted home.

Recommended Posts

Watched the movie Taking Chance which I think is a must see for all Americans.

The movie is based on an article by Marine Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, this HBO original film tells the story of Strobl's emotional experience traveling across America as a volunteer escort officer for the body of fallen 19-year-old marine Chance Phelps. The 2004 journey was made especially significant by the fact that both Strobl and Phelps share the same hometown of Dubois, Wyo., with a population of less than 1,000.

Most highly recommended.

GREAT Flick is what ALL the reviews I've read said and the Military Community I still work IN and run with all highly recommend it. (In fact, I took the Casualty Notification Officers Course and they recommended we ALL WATCH IT as part of our training! The training itself was sobering enough and I pray I never have to do it but Kevin Bacon DID do a fantastic job in that role; he MET with that now Retired Marine LtCol in fact many times in order to REALLY "get INTO his Character" OOH-RAH and SEMPER FI to that!! GOOD Movie and great recommendation...I'll have to now put my $ where my mouth is on this one!

Thanks!

"J1B!"

I got it through Netflix and they do not show a Blue Ray version available through them.

  • 1 month later...

I wanted to revive this forum to let interested folks know that HBO will be reairing this well made and moving film on Veteran's day, 11-11-09.

I urge folks not to miss this opportunity to view or review this film again second time. I believe that HBO will air it twice that day, but check your local listings to confirm.

If you haven't seen this film already, be prepared to be moved by it.

For more information about this film, click on the link in post #10.

Please tell your family members and friends to watch this movie.

Wow. May good thoughts and strength be with our troops.

The Rocky Mountain News, which I think was probably the better newspaper in Denver, went out of business earlier this year.

One of their stories, of Major (now Colonel) Steve Beck - who at the time was stationed with a group of Marines out of Buckley AFB - won a Pulitzer Prize. He and his group was "the knock on the door".

I think it is time to switch my wallpaper back to this photo:

Thankfully, the powers that be have decided to retain some of the Rocky's works online. The entire article (which was published as an insert) can be read and downloaded from here:

Keep the tissue box nearby. There are some quite powerful images.

Jim Sheeler later expanded the article into a book which included follow up events of a Native American soldier from the Sioux Reservation in South Dakota.
