“Cash for Clunkers” Provides Windfall for Some, High Prices for All, According to Edmunds.com

http://www.virtualpressoffice.com/publicsi...isableHistory=Y

They continue to be against the program and that's fine.

However people traditionally didn't trade these types of vehicles and dealers could look on to make money on the car traded in to offset any dealer discounts where the dealer plays the a trade value vs. auto discount calculation. Under this program there is no trade to be resold so there are no possible offsets to any discounts applied on the top line.

But regardless I don't think I agree with the use of "windfall"? Using their numbers, for Ford, you get an average increase of between $150-$200 per vehicle, hardly a windfall, and given the work needed to process these deals as told to us by ShelbyDude, I suspect they may be justified in some way. No idea what Chrysler is doing other than maybe at the same time removing the "we're going into bankruptcy" discounts as well.

Remember these are people that otherwise would not be trading these vehicles and often not able to buy any car at all! So while these people are paying this $150-$200 premium they just got $4,500 premium for a car often worth far less! In other words this is a deal where everyone makes money.

Under the Edmunds ideal, where there was no program for these people, they would pay the old price and get the actual value for their trade. I think the chances are high that the "deal" would be FAR more onerous than the $134 difference on that Focus.

Edmunds only touches on a small part of the problems associated with the Clunkers program. Primarily, all it serves to do is put most people in greater debt, increases taxes, spreads the wealth in socialistic fashion and provides only an appearance that some things are getting better when in reality it is making things worse.

DECREASE TAXES, stop the spend and tax policies of the Democrats and then watch the economy improve! This won't start happening, however, until we vote many of them back out of office in 2010.

Dealers still waiting for millions of late payments!

http://wot.motortrend.com/6569370/governme...owed/index.html

Wow, imagine what government run healthcare would be like!

Personally.....I do not feel sorry for them at all. They are taking in great Vehicles KNOWING they have to destroy them when there is other ways to take them in as Trade Ins. Dealers around here have been offering "Double" for the "Cash for Clunkers". If your Vehicle qualifies for $4,500.00, they will double it to $9,000.00. Yes, Dealer retains ALL incentives and Cash Back Offers, BUT, :censored: , If they can double the amount, they should, instead, just replace the C4C offer. There are many people who could use some of those Vehicles, PLUS, look what is happening to the Used Car Dealers who rely on the Vehicles Traded in at the New Dealerships that are not getting ANY Vehicles now because they all must be Destroy them instead of selling them to the Used Car Lots.

ShelbyDude, is the C for C program helping your dealership move cars? Are people coming in to buy cars, that wouldn't otherwise be there? Would the owner of your dealership rather not participate in the program? Just some honest questions... I understand that aspects of the program are not ideal, and there is extra effort involved, and it seems like certain autos are being destroyed that could otherwise be used somewhere (though there is a glut of used cars out there), but in the end- I would think the salesmen would be happy to stop twiddling their thumbs and move some cars.

edit: I see you answered some of my questions above while I was typing this...

I see your point, and what most people see with the salesman and dealers. But you need to review the latest history lessons on this type of program in California and later in Arizona, in less than 6 months both states budgets were gone, yes belly up, broke, nada. It is like someone said before the public in this program is a bank for all, what happen if the income to the bank is gone. The money has to come from somewwhere. You can't spend more than you make, and if your cash flow stops for any marginal period, unless your loaded your doomed. All this program has done is extended the dooms day.

Nothing personal, I live in AZ and watched it happen with good ol Janet. About killed us with the alternative fuel program.

Many of the Cars that are being Traded In are worth more then the $4,500.00. I wander how many Dealers later decided to keep the Vehicle and trash the Paperwork BUT the customer was under the impression he was doing the C4C?

From what I have been seeing, I think the Mess has just begun.........................

I read yesterday that about 80% of the submissions have been denied which I do not understand. The Government gave a List of Vehicles that were eligible to be a Clunker and they gave a List of which Vehicles were eligible for purchase for the C4C Program and they said what was needed to get the Refund..................... so WHY is the Government Denying so many Claims?

Well well well, spoke to my local Ford dealer/owner, we visit quite often. Over $300,00 and not a rebate check yet. Not even a reply. His cash flow is caput. He said he might be able to hold on a few more weeks to a month. He really doesn't think he will be able to recover, without a major disaster happening, so he can get assitance. Even though he went against his better judgement and participated in the clunker program. I didn't ask if he had to per Ford or ?. Oh well. He thinks the worst is yet to come. It was a temporary fix, all this did was clear some off the lot, created more public debt, more business debt, more goverment debt. AND GUESS WHAT? WE ALL GET TO PAY FOR IT? :banghead:

If your still working.

this is already approved funding that's not going to banks or the insurance industry fat cats,

:shift:

Classic. Well the money's already approved so wasting it is only appropriate. THEY wouldn't want to NOT spend it and start to repay some of what THEY owe.
