ilmor
I'm curious to know what tires some of you would recommend for autocross and track use. My autocross club allows a street-legal tire w/ a minimum treadwear rating of 140. Thanks for any suggestions!
DougsBadBlackMustang
Nitto Extreme ZR's for me. Pricey at almost $300 per tire mounted (for 20") but I use as the street tire (they do not hunt around on rough pavement) and hook-up well when being irresponsible. Cannot speak about wet weather - have not benn caught out. On the track at Sebring, got into the 2:36's so I'll let the time do the talking. Great on concrete and different black top surfaces; good feel.
jwhite1967
just got a set of F-1's from Tire Rack this month at $133 each plus $50 frt. but at the time they had a $50 rebate from Goodyear. Last time I looked the price had dropped to $129 each on 255/45ZR18. Our car is not a daily driver so we don't drive in bad weather.
FordFan1
BFG R1’s, Hooiser or Kumho V710 are some of the more serious brands (DOT slicks) at the track now days, most likely it will depend on which manufacture makes a tire in the sizes you are looking for.. Other options that are more street worthy are Falken Azenis, Dunlop Star Specs & Nitto NT05 I’m using BFG R1’s for the track I also have a set of Nitto NT05 for daily use or for any up coming wet track events that I might participate in. There's lots to choose from- good luck
Frank S
I have apparently misplaced the recent (must have been the one before current) that updates Grassroots Motor Sport's tire tests. Seems to me the previous best AX choice, Bridgestone Potenza RE-O1R tire, was second to another, slightly faster one that was cheaper. Here it is (August 09): the Bridgestone was RE-11, successor to RE-O1. Kumho ECSTA XS 34.842 sec; RE-11 Bridgestone at 35.262; Toyo Proxes R1R at 35.264; Yokohama Advan AD08 at 34.827; Kumho ECSTA XS retest at 34.541. This was Part Two of a two-part test; follow-up because the Toyo was not available the first time. That report appeared in the June 2009 issue (which is definitely not around here), and showed pretty much the same result Kumho fastest, others just fractionally behind. Interesting note: the Bridgestone tire "seemed to prefer" more air than the others, around 43psi, as opposed to others at mid-30s. I have an idle set of 245-45x18 Bridgestone RE-O1Rs on 18x8.5 SVT "Fanblades", and they are really a revelation in relation to any other street tire I have run. Relatively rough-riding, if that is important to you, but sticky beyond belief. Beyond my skill-level, too. In the old days I could get close to the edge of any equipment's potential, but in my older days the tires are too quick for my reflexes to be able to take advantage of them. If you are serious about Autocross or track days, Grassrooots Motor Sports is a must-read: http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/ ·
ilmor
Thanks for the good info! I do read grassroots motorsports on occasion, but I don't subcribe. It's a great mag.
ilmor
The Nitto NT05 may be a good choice also.... http://www.corral.net/new/index.php/tech/4...t05-tire-review In addition to the one's listed above... Kumho ECSTA XS 34.842 sec; RE-11 Bridgestone at 35.262; Toyo Proxes R1R at 35.264; Yokohama Advan AD08 at 34.827; Kumho ECSTA XS retest at 34.541.
