Feedback on new 2010 Shelby GT500 Convertible

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have a quick question that I'm struggling with finding the answer. I love the new 2010 Shelby GT500 convertible but have some concerns about handling.. My understanding is that the convertible did not get the updated suspension of the coupe and thus with the big 5.4 may not handle much better than previous versions. I know Roush is building the 427R with the 4.6 motor which weigh a few hundred pounds less and also can update the suspension for better handling. While I would prefer a Shelby, does it make sense that the lighter front end car with better suspension will out handle the Shelby? Is there anything I can do to fix it? The both are going to be within 5K of each other price wise for a stock Shelby or fully loaded 427R.

Thanks In Advance

Ed

The vert does not have the same size wheels/tires as the coupe, but as an 07 vert owner, it seems to handle very well and actually has a good ride to it.....not as soft as a regular GT but not as stiff as a Shelby GT. Because us vert owners aren't typically 1/4 mile warriors, the verts are a little softer sprung--suits me fine for cruising and occasional stop-light gran prix! Given the difference between the heritage, name and eye appeal, I wouldn't give the Roush a second thought....go Shelby! There are LOTS of suspension kits for the GT 500 to make it handle like a go kart, if you want that.

Thanks wheelman, your Shelby is awesome! It turns out they'll both be the same $. I cant see passing up on a Shelby. I guess I will upgrade suspension as it becomes available

I have a '10 Vert, and have also driven older gt500 verts and regular GT Verts (new model and previous). I am really impressed by what was done to this new GT500 Vert. The suspension just seems to work SO well, the car is infinitely stiffer than the past few years. Add in the smaller 18" rims and its sprung perfectly. I've thrown it around quite a bit, and have not scared myself (or wrecked it) yet (with Stability Control System on). It lets you go a bit wild without killing yourself. Now of course, if you want to white knuckle it, turn it to "Sport" or OFF completely. You can always mod out and make the suspension stiffer in so many ways, which will improve overall handling, cornering etc. But that will also equate to the car being more "jittery" and less compliant on "less than perfect" road surfaces. Get a drive in a '10 Vert and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Agree with 2 previous posters--it has a little cowl twist, but a tower strut kit will fix that.I also own a C6 Vette ragtop, and even with the P51 suspension option, its nowhere near as comfy or able to hold the road like the GT500.If you take a good curve at 70 w/o braking you feel like your on rails--and bumps are not rib breakers. The Vette will jump on the bumps. So, unless your a road racer, stick with the GT500.

To what tower strut kit do you refer? I'd love to have something like that - but haven't found anything.

H, you already have one. It's the bar the ties the two front strut towers together. The stock bar is small (diameter), but if you are still planning to Super Snake your car, SAI will replace it with a larger (beefer) Ford Racing strut bar.

If you have decided against the SS package, you can purchase the M-20201-C bar directly from FRPP. The aluminum strut brace that SPP sells won't fit the GT500.

The '10 Roush is a great looking car, but I think the power of the 5.4 would be the trump card for me.

It is true that the '10 suspension on the Vert is a carry over, so it probably handles just about the same as before. BUT, I really like the way my '08 handles / rides, etc...

It shakes a little, but I still can't stop grinning everytime I drive it. Nothing in the world like WOT in a GT500!
